Farewell Lizzy – DDR’s OG lady

Tribute to Lizzy
by Lori Weise

Today, Friday January 13th Lizzy my “OG” from the original pack of Downtown Dogs has passed away. She was estimated to be 18-19 years old. I met Lizzy 16 years ago when she lived with Benny, pictured here with Lizzy the Shepherd and Teri the pit bull.

What a great life she had. As a pup, she lived in a home and go to work with her owner who worked at Central Produce, every day until one day, she just didn’t want to go home anymore and began her 14 year adventure with Benny as his #1 Road Dog. Lizzy had a crush on Benny’s big black male pit bull named Iron Head who was a lot like Clancy and was the papa dog to my two original pups, Maya, who has passed and Yuki as well as Sandy’s Annie who has passed and Lezle’s Lucy. We all had Iron Head pups because at that time, Benny didn’t allow us to spay/neuter his dogs. Thankfully, Lizzy was spayed as a pup so she never had her own puppies but she raised a lot of litters of pups that Iron Head fathered and brought home.

What a different time it was. Benny had a spot in an alley, behind a gate, a hose for running water, an extension cord for a TV and a small shed with a bed where Lizzy and Iron Head and the rest of the dogs slept. As Benny called them, “The Night Ladies” came by to relax after a long night of work, to feel safe, wash their clothes, eat, watch tv and just hang out with the dogs until their pimp called them back to work. Lizzy saw it all, including the horrible event when Teri was cold heartedly shot by an LAPD officer, just missing Lizzy who lay close to her. Lizzy also was there when Benny was beaten unconsciously as she defended him and later was quarantined for biting a man. She attacked another man that tried to stab Benny. One thing for sure, Lizzy was a loyal old lady who never wore a collar until I made him license her and I never saw her on a leash, NEVER. She was a road dog who traveled from 7th and Mateo over to Soto and 4th over to 6th and Main and when Benny got too tired to walk home, he rode the bus and told Lizzy, “Go Home” and she did, often beating him back to the spot. I never saw Benny without Lizzy. Sure, I would be nervous […]

WEST LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT:BLUE — Sweet Old Man

From Chela:

Can you imagine this dog in his prime? How stunning he must have been, how sweet and beautiful before they chopped off his ears too short, before they neglected him to almost starvation? Can you imagine all the good years he lost to sadness and neglect, years where he would have loved to be so loyal and affectionate, how he would have loved to have been told he was a good boy by a gentle voice? I hope he doesn’t die without ever experiencing that…..

A1260063 – Blue, 12 year old, male, American Staffordshire.

Blue came to the shelter as a stray. He was in pretty bad shape when he arrived, emaciated and could barely stand.
He has gained some weight since he arrived and is now able to stand.

Blue is a very sweet old man that deserves a chance to live out the rest of his days, weeks, months or years in a loving caring home. Something he has probably not experienced in his last 12 years of life.

If you are interested in adopting Blue please contact me.

BE IN THE KNOW: Diane Carey, Animal Cruelty Case Update

Diane Carey president of South Central Stray Rescue pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges avoiding a jury trial. An anonymous videographer sent me this link. It details the abuse that went on at her kennel on 61st Street in South Los Angeles. South Central Stray Rescue is still a functioning non profit that can accept tax deductible donations. Charlie, Amanda, Trixie and Pepper, to name a few, survived this hell.

DDR Programs: LOVE ON A LEASH published in PASADENA WEEKLY

LOVE ON A LEASH
Formerly homeless dogs offer love to humans who’ve suffered the same fate
By Amy Tenowich 10/20/2011
“Come on, Peaches!” a spunky woman says enthusiastically as she enters the Skid Row Housing Trust office in downtown LA with an orange and white whippet. The little pup sniffs around and greets the other humans and canines waiting to go for their weekly stroll a few blocks to Pershing Square.
Since 1989, the nonprofit Skid Row Trust (aka the Trust) has preserved, built and operated extremely low-rent housing for LA’s homeless. Financed by government grants, foundation support and private contributions, the Trust currently has 1,492 tenants placed in 22 downtown apartment buildings and runs programs aimed at keeping them from winding up back on the streets.
While residents now have the security of a safe place to sleep, the no-pet policy leaves a void in those who equate “home” with having an animal. But now, thanks to an innovative new program, humans and animals are reconnecting.
“I wanted to figure out a way to have some animal time, so residents can benefit from the love that they give us,” says Jordan Press, resident services coordinator at the Trust and creator of the Dog Play event. Press saw flyers near her office for Downtown Dog Rescue, an organization that rehabilitates and carefully places formerly homeless, abused and neglected dogs into loving homes. She called, hoping to find volunteers willing to bring once-stray pooches to hang out with the Trust’s tenants who miss animal companionship. Since January 2010, up to 30 humans and dogs have gathered from 10:45 a.m. till noon every Wednesday to walk then relax together on the grass for some bonding.
Retiree Burt Dragotis of Pasadena, a volunteer with the Downtown Dog Rescue, has been coming every week with his furry wards Carley, Puppy and Greta, who has an endearing little snaggletooth. “Every Wednesday morning, these guys know what time it is,” Dragotis says of his leashed companions, whose tail wags and rump sways reveal their excitement.
Dragotis also looks forward to the weekly visits. “These guys are, all in their own way, very touching,” he says of the residents. “Part of it is being aware of life that isn’t so good for everyone.” Dragotis says he enjoys the immediate gratification of seeing the dogs and the people interacting. “For the majority of the world, it’s pretty damn tough.”

DogKnic: AN EVENT APPROVED BY THE CRIPS

As the founder of Downtown Dog Rescue, working in the community of South Los Angeles now for approximately ten years, I knew that when my friend and dog trainer Larry Hill and I set out to organize an event to promote pet responsibility called DogKnic at St Andrews Park in South West Los Angeles, the approval would not come from City Hall or the Department of Animal Care and Control, it would come from the gangs that control that park, to be specific, The Neighborhood 90s and the 8 Tray Gangsters, two Crip sets. The easy part was getting Anthony, the park supervisor on board to allow us to bring DogKnic, a community event that offered free spay/neuter, vaccinations and micro chipping for dogs and most important, brought together some of the most outstanding training clubs in the Greater Los Angeles area. Immediately, Best Friends, Karma Rescue, Found Animals and Amanda Foundation all came on board to support our family oriented event but we still needed approval from the gangs.

Because Larry lives in the neighborhood, has trained dogs in the community for forty years and understands the challenges of being a youth with little or no alternative to the gang lifestyle, he sat down one afternoon at the picnic area in the park with the 8 Trays, asking them for their approval. They agreed. Now, he needed to get the same approval from the 90s, they agreed. Sounds easy? Not really, despite the relationships that he had developed in the community. When we decided to use St. Andrews Park as our event site, Larry knew that without the 8 Trays and the 90s approval, the event may not be safe for everyone. He also understood the importance of respecting their territory. The complex dynamic of how that approval went down involved Larry calling his nephew, who was a member of the 8 Treys, now relocated in Oklahoma but still the shot caller for this set. Once his nephew called some of the members, explaining that his family was going to be in the park, Larry was confident, nothing violent would happen at DogKnic. Everything was coming together great, lots of people coming to the event from all parts of the City, LAPD was on board, glad to hear about a community event taking place in a park that was once better known for shootings more than people walking their dogs and children playing on swings.

Then it happened, the Thursday before our Saturday event, an LAPD officer was shot in the same neighborhood, off of Western near 70th street. The shooter was able to escape but over 72 city blocks covering nearly 800 homes were included in the police lock […]

Hamster’s Story…
Hamster was rescued from the West LA shelter where he was originally adopted as a very young 8 week old puppy but returned a couple of months ago at one year old because he was too much dog for the family. He lived with small children, other dogs, even cats and did very well. Like most pit bull mixes, he is energetic and needs to be walked and exercised. He loves other dogs and could go to a dog park everyday, he would love it. He is still growing, weighing about 60lbs now, he knows basic obedience, is house trained, has been neutered, microchipped and is current on his vaccinations.
Please call Sandy at 818-407-4145 or e-mail Lori@modernica.net to set up an appt to meet Hamster.

WEST LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ROCKY, HAMSTER & SIMONE

Dogs who end up at West LA shelter are generally “luckier” than dogs at other city shelters like South LA because they generally get more time to find a home. But a pit bull in the shelter is still going to have a tough time finding the right home. For the three dogs listed below their right person just hasn’t come along yet and now their time is desperately coming to an end! Please consider meeting one of these dogs. They are living at the West LA Shelter. If you can adopt or foster call the shelter or

Rocky-A0958515 has been at West LA Shelter since Sept 16, 2010.
HIS TIME IS UP!!

This 3 year old guy has been through a lot. He was abandoned by his former owners along with his fellow pit bull friend. The landlords brought them to the shelter together. They were a nice pair. Then Rocky got adopted for a couple of days but the neighbor’s dogs was getting over the fence and obviously it was easier to return Rocky rather than fix the fence! Zeesh! So…now Rocky’s time is up at the shelter.

HE NEEDS TO FIND A HOME OR RESCUE!

Rocky is a cool dog that doesn’t need much. He likes to play fetch and hang out. Rocky is very quiet in his kennel and is happy when he gets to go for walks. He’d be great for someone who has a backyard and just wants to chill and throw a ball or he’d be just as great for an active person who likes to work out!
Rocky is worth saving! Come meet this dog at West LA Shelter before it’s too late!
