BE IN THE KNOW: DOG FIGHTING RING AT RESIDENCE BUSTED

Community Message has been issued by the:
LASD – Headquarters Newsroom (SHB)
Los Angeles County Sheriff.
Wednesday March 2, 2011 10:25 PM PST

Dog fighting at residence leads to 17 dogs, arrests,
cocaine, & kids taken into protective custody

An alleged dog fighting training operation at a Lake Los Angeles home was shut down today by sheriff’s deputies, and a couple was arrested for training dogs to fight, as well as for possession of cocaine. Their four children were taken into protective custody and seventeen pit bull dogs were recovered by animal control officers.

The dog fighting investigation began when a confidential informant called the LA County 24-hour Dog Fighting Tipline (877-662-3483) to report that people were training dogs for fighting. The tip was reported to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, who relayed the information to deputies in the Antelope Valley so it could be investigated.

Over the next month, Deputies Robert Ferrell and Fred Hill with the Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Bureau, investigated the dog fighting case, working with officers from the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, and Lancaster Sheriff’s Station deputies. The deputies ultimately found sufficient probable cause to be able to obtain a search warrant.

At about 4:30AM Wednesday, sheriff’s deputies from COPS Bureau, Lancaster, and Palmdale Stations, joined by L.A. Co. Animal Control officers and LA Co. Dept. of Children and Family Services, went to the home on the 41000 block of 178th St. East, Lake Los Angeles.
Once there, they found an elaborate dog fighting and training operation.

On the property they found seventeen pit bull dogs, some of which were tied to stakes in the yard. Dried blood was found on a portable wooden fighting ring that was leaning against a wall.

They also found a large amount of medical supplies, including surgical tools and medication, IV saline solution, and syringes to administer medicine and […]

ACTIVATE: Dogs Rescued from Hoarder – PLS Help find them Homes

Life in the hands of a hoarder is unpredictable at best. Maggie Bear, was one of 85 dogs collected by a notorious hoarder, then abandoned in the high desert in the triple digit month of August. Many of the dogs were clearly related. Not surprising as only a few were fixed. Litters of puppies were soon born in wood piles and derelict sheds; wherever the Mothers could find a safe hiding place. Soon there were over a hundred dogs, all but a few, now confined to hastily erected kennels. Uncertainty and stress a part of their lives. Some craving attention, others hiding as best they could. Here are FIVE of these dogs who still need help to find a good home. PLEASE HELP THEM however you can by networking and posting on Facebook etc.

Clearly some of the dogs had once known a real life of sorts, but whether abandoned at a shelter, found running on a freeway, released for a paltry donation by a desperate owner or born to an unfixed dog on a remote property; now they all shared the same fate. Cruella DeVille has nothing on the people who hoard animals. Most of the dogs from this most recent hoarding situation have been rescued but some still need to find the wonderful home they so deserve and I am hoping you can help by forwarding this e-mail.
All of the dogs have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and generally vetted.

Please contact me if you would like to meet any of the dogs or need more info.
Many Thanks ! Helen Storey (helen.storey@verizon.net)

MAGGIE BEAR is a very lovable, cuddly girl, who was so scared at the hoarder property that she hid in an Igloo kennel day and night. After 5 weeks in a great foster home she has blossomed and is now comfortable going for walks with her foster Mom & her rescue dog, and enjoying all the benefits of the good life. Now she just needs a home to call her very own ! Maggie is a Shepherd/Husky mix who is 4 years old, healthy and house-trained. She is very quiet and easy going and will be a lovely companion for whoever is lucky enough to adopt her.

BE IN THE KNOW: Pitbull or Pet-friendly rentals in Los Angeles and beyond:

WoofTags was created out of our passion for saving animals. During our decades of work and volunteering at shelters and rescues, we saw first-hand the tragic results of so many lost pets. As one shelter’s webmaster, we set them up to sell pet ID tags online. It was one part of promoting “a tag is your pet’s ticket home” – the shelter even offered a ‘free’ ride home to stray pets with ID if they could reach the owner and return it right away!

Still, all too often, pets were found without ID, or with unreadable, worn out tags. Those pets might wait for days in the shelter before they were finally found – taking up all-too-valuable kennel space. We were inspired: we wanted to promote a better quality tag than those cheap aluminum vending machine tags, a tag that would not wear out, so pets could be home instead of in a shelter!

Another idea sparked our creation of WoofTags. Rescues can only provide vet care and boarding for as many pets as they can afford. So we’ve dedicated ourselves to helping those rescues do all they can do to help homeless pets, by donating ALL of our profits to their difficult life-saving mission.

Thank you for buying your tags from WoofTags and helping rescued pets!

Here are some of our past fosters, all adopted into loving homes. 🙂

More tips from a successful pitbull renter:

What helped me was: 1) having renters insurance. I pay like $300/year which works out to like $25 per month for Renters insurance with liability that covers up to half million. Plus $5,000 personal property. This makes landlords feel more secure because they don’t need to purchase additional homeowners insurance or worry that they’ll be liable. 2) My dog has her CGC Canine Good Citizen Certification. It basically says, “This dog is good in ALL situations.” 3) I made a doggy resume, to personalize her […]

LORI’s CORNER: Recognizing Excellence! Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS OFFICER SHATANA BACON!
Lori & DDR are very happy for you!
From the City of Los Angeles Department of Animal Services:

Animal Control Officer Recognized
By the Los Angeles City Association of Black Personnel

For the first time in the organization’s history, the Los Angeles City Association of Black Personnel has selected an Animal Control Officer as one of six outstanding Los Angeles City employees recently honored. Animal Control Officer Shatana Bacon joined five other City employees who received the 2011 Trailblazers Award for their contributions to the advancement of African Americans in city government.

Shatana was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Susan Miller Dorsey High School. She began her college studies at California State University, Los Angeles and then transferred to Cal Poly, Pomona, where she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science. Shatana then earned her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.

Shatana has been with the department for 5 1/2 years. She is married and has a one year old son, Clay.

Shatana is a solid officer who consistently and capably completes her responsibilities each month. She is focused and observant in recognizing potential animal abuse and neglect cases. She is compassionate and caring with a history of rescuing abused animals and those living in deplorable situations. She is an excellent communicator and mediator whether she is called on to speak in barking dog meetings, or to testify as a Department representative in dangerous animal hearings.

“I am so proud that Shatana was selected by the Los Angeles City Association of Black Personnel for this honor,” said General Manager Brenda Barnette. “It was a pleasure to be there to celebrate her service. We are proud to have Shatana as an important member of our Los Angeles Animal Services family.”

DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: THRILLER

THRILLER

Thriller is approximately one year old and has spent his entire life with his owner living outside, on the streets and in the parks in Compton. Downtown Dog Rescue vaccinated, neutered and micro chipped him as a young pup and we have watched him grown up. His owner went to jail and because Thriller was wearing a DDR ID tag, a friend of his owner called us and we were able to rescue him immediately. He is currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. He is extremely loving with people and other dogs.

A medium size dog, he weighs about 50 lbs, is in super health and has no behavioral or health issues that a potential adopter should be concerned about. Basically, Thriller is good to go! He has never had a home and your home would be his first. Please consider adopting this well socialized, trained dog that is so deserving of a good home.

Please call Sandy at 818-407-4145
