1st Picks for 2nd Chances – Meet Daisy!

A daisy can brighten your day. We’re not talking about the flower, we’re talking about our Daisy, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier who bonds tightly with her people. This beautiful girl is calm around the house, but also loves running around a yard and laying in the sun. She is not destructive and can be home alone an entire day without any problems at all.

We rescued Daisy when she was a puppy, and she was fearful in general back then. But being young came to her advantage and she was able to gracefully learn about life, behaved great with other dogs, and slowly grew lDaisy1ess anxious in new situations. Her discomfort in the world did not go away quickly and perhaps it never will entirely; however, she is very smart! She learns slowly and gets it. Then about a year ago, Daisy was adopted. Unfortunately her adopters added another dog to the home who was challenging. Living with a dog who did not like her, plus moving into a small space requiring several walks a day, was too much stress. Daisy was returned to us more uneasy around dogs, and better suited for a peaceful, nice life without other pets to share a home with. She would prefer not to tag along on errands with you, and instead stay home and greet you excitedly when you walk through the door.

Daisy’s dream would be to have a house and a yard, as well as an owner who gives belly rubs and accepts her for who she is – a truly wonderful companion. She is so very loving, she will lay by your feet for hours and be your absolute best friend. If you don’t have much time to spend walking and working with a dog, but would enjoy having a buddy around who does not ask for much, then Daisy is your lady! We believe wholeheartedly that the right home is out there just waiting to find her…and she’s waiting for you, too.

Daisy 2As DDR the rescue group, we’re all about second chances. We believe all animals deserve a second chance, and we stand by each of our rescue dogs. They are worthy souls living up to their potentials, some getting there easier and quicker than others. And yet there are a few dogs that stand out because they have unique needs, because they’ve been with us so long, or because they’ve been patiently waiting for the right family to call their own. Daisy’s story is the forth and last in our four-part series called 1st Picks for 2nd Chances. We sincerely hope you will read each of these tales, share them widely, and open your hearts.

Daisy is house-trained, spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. To learn more about her, please click on this link! And don’t forget to share her story with your friends, family, and coworkers. Who knows who might be her destiny – maybe even consider opening your home if you’re a good fit! The person who adopts Daisy or any one of these 1st Picks for 2nd Chances dogs will get free boarding at the DDR […]

MY FIRST FOSTER PUPS – PUP TWO

I started helping DDR with fostering puppies last summer.
Each Puppy has brought me a different learning experience and so much love and joy!

CRAZY STACEY

The second puppy, a little street pup that had been locked up in a van to keep her safe, was very skinny when she came to me.Stacey had a LOT of energy and played with my dogs for hours every day until she dropped! She had developed separation anxiety, maybe from being locked up, and I quickly learned that she was an escape artist! The first morning, I was going to take Princess for a walk by herself. I went out the walkway towards the gate, turned around, and there was little Stacey right next to me. She had climbed the 5ft fence to my yard in seconds! At work, she would get out of her play pen by climbing over it. I made a roof out of cardboard and thought I was smart…….until she figured out how to lift the pen and get out underneath instead! She would figure out anything I came up with, but how can you get frustrated looking in to her big eyes who said; “I just want to come with you”.She earned the nick name “Crazy Stacey”.

Little by little, she calmed down and learned to be by herself for short periods of time. When Lori told me there was a man who wanted to adopt her after spending a month with me, I got a little nervous. I scrolled down the application and read, “I WORK AT HOME”. A match made in heaven!!

Scott came to meet Stacey and decided to adopt her. She is gradually learning to be home alone and I am so happy that this little girl found the perfect person. Her name is “Penny” now, and this photo was taken the morning I delivered her to her new dad!

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part II

TRAVIS
I picked up Travis from the animal hospital about a month ago to come and stay with us to heal up and get healthy. This little pup had a rough start in life and had been attacked multiple times by other dogs.

Hi – I am Travis, the cutest puppy ever! I know that for a fact because people stop me on the street all the time to tell me how beautiful I am. I’M HOT!!
I’m learning super quick. I figured out the doggy door myself with the cone and everything. I love people, they are so much fun! I like to play in the sun with Sass & Princess, but if it’s cold and rainy, I rather stay inside and cuddle. I am officially house broken now and can hold it all night! I am extremely comfy in a crate since I had to spend a lot of quality time in there to heal up. I’m growing really fast because I LOVE FOOD!

I will soon join Lori’s pack downtown to play with all the dogs and go out on adoption events.

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part I

I started helping DDR with fostering puppies last summer. Each Puppy has brought me a different learning experience and so much love and joy!

KOO-KOO CHANEL

Before the first one, “Ethel,” arrived, I went to purchase a crate for a 5-6 month old pup. Since I never crated a dog before it was a confusing experience to pick one out. I think it’s safe to say that the puppies did much better in crate training than I did, I’m still in crate training, four puppies later!

Billy drove Ethel over to my house, and when she jumped out of the car, it was obvious that her age had been a little miscalculated… She was bigger than my dogs…. probably more like 8-10 months old, so the crate I had purchased was too small. Back to the store in a hurry, to get a bigger one!
This girl came from South LA Shelter and was red listed, due to mange. Lori had her pulled and sent to the hospital for treatment, and then she came straight to my house. Her coat was dull and had spots of hair loss. Ethel quickly settled in with my dogs, and they had the best time playing. After a few days, she started itching again, and I had to take her to the hospital for another Mitaben bath. When I picked her up in the evening, she was exhausted and did not want to play or eat. I got so worried about her that I slept on the couch with her next to me on the floor. I woke up many times to wipe her runny nose. She was back to normal the next day, which was a huge relief!

Ethel’s chocolate brown coat quickly got shiny and beautiful. She became a stunning looking dog! I used to call her “Koo-Koo Chanel”: “Koo-Koo,” because of her sometimes crazy puppy behavior, and “Chanel” since she was so stylish!
On a trip to the Sequoias, I ran into two ladies who admired her and when they heard her story, wanted to adopt her. A few days later back in LA, I delivered Ethel to her new forever home in Manhattan Beach. Yes… I cried on my way back home. Since she was my first foster, it was hard to separate.

But in the evening, my sadness went to happiness when I received an email from her new family with this wonderful photo of her with her NEW name “Zoey”, and her NEW brother, together on her NEW bed 🙂

From red listed at the shelter to a NEW life!

LORI’S CORNER: Super Adoption was a Super Saturday!

On Saturday, we brought out a lot of dogs that we had rescued from a kennel that was closing. The owner of the kennel had asked for help in placing close to 100 dogs before they had to move all the dogs to some not so terrific places. Sandy organized the volunteers to come out to Petco where we had every breed except pit bulls this past Saturday. Many of the 40 + dogs that we have rescued from this facility have been placed in breed rescues, in foster homes and a few in forever homes. We still have lots of dogs that need foster and forever homes including one special old shepherd who is about 12 years old. I want to thank the Amanda Foundation, Best Friends and the Heigl Foundation for helping Downtown Dog Rescue taking some of these dogs out of an over crowded situation. There still is a lot more work to do. The dogs that we did get out are all so grateful to be on the road to their forever homes! What a great team we had on Saturday, evaluating, transporting, bathing, and showing the dogs at Petco. A special thank you to everyone who showed up to foster a dog so that no dog had to go back to the kennel.

Beautiful Cassie who still needs a home

“Trouble” never game me one minute of trouble!
He is now in his forever home in Santa Monica.

Happy puppy and new family!
