LORI’S CORNER: My afternoon with Edgar and Queeny

On Saturday afternoon, Clancy and I paid a visit to Edgar’s home, where he met me with Queeny, who was eager to go on a walk and show me the neighborhood. Edgar had warned me about his neighborhood. He pointed out a couple guys that were Blood Piru and some tagging on the walls. We walked to the end of the block when he told me about his 17 year old friend who had been killed by gang members, shot several times in the chest, mistaken identity, since his friend was not a gang member. VERY sad.

We crossed the street to the community center where we are planning to host a free spay/neuter day for pit bulls living in the City of Hawthorne. He told me about the alley across from the parking lot where a young girl had been raped recently. All within a short walk from his apartment. As we walked back to his apartment, he showed me the area where Queeny had been attacked by two pit bulls less than a month ago. Thankfully, both Queeny and Edgar were not injured but the dogs were taken to the shelter and have probably been euthanized since this wasn’t their first time out of the street, threatening public safety. Edgar knows their owner. According to Edgar, they are not bad dogs but they got unlucky and had a really bad neglectful owner.

I truly believe that in most cases where a pit bull or really any loose dog attacks a person or another dog there is a bad owner. I’m not referring to accidents where someone lost control of their leash, Edgar had two loose dogs jump on top of his little Queeny and try to tear her apart. I wasn’t on the street long to notice, everyone that passed by us had a pit bull and I can’t say that everyone looked like they had the best intentions for their dogs.

Edgar has truly taken the lead on our Hawthorne dog clinic. He has already met with the animal control officer who is 100% for the idea of bringing more spay/neuter services to Hawthorne. […]

PITStop Community Assist: CUTIE needs a HOME!

HI ! My name is Cutie. I am wearing a beautiful Sable Cinnamon coat, a pink nose and beautiful brown eyes. I am an American Staffordshire Pit bull Terrier mix. I an updated on all my shots (10-16-2010) including a microchip implant (11-6-2010) and waiting to be registered when I become adopted.

I just came out of spay surgery on November 6th, 2010 and have been instructed no long walks for two weeks. – WHAT a relief ! –
No more kids ! It will take me 3 to 4 months to get my shape back! The vet estimates my age to be approximately 2 – 3 years old.

I am a rescued person that had been homeless since April of 2010 but was finally saved October 16th, 2010. I became homeless because the property owner lost the property and my owner lost his rental unit. The new owner did not want me – I guess because of the way I looked. The contractors for the new owner were nice to me and came everyday – they gave me water and brought me their kinda food.

When I was rescued and taken into the temporary foster family, I was so crestfallen and beside myself – I wept for two weeks every time I ate my food or went for a walk because it was always the food was for me and I didn’t have to eat garbage any more. The walks reminded me of what a home and family was like. I felt so unloved and discarded at first. But My temporary foster Mom/Rescuer has 3 other rescued dogs that I know – Boxer, Buddy and Nutmeg. I am currently doing the Mom-Thing playing with Nutmeg – a six month old female – she was taken from her mommy when she was about 3 weeks.

BE IN THE KNOW: Jon Stewart, Pit Bulls, and Media Hysteria by Ledy VanKavage

Pit Bulls,
and Media Hysteria

The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear was a huge success on Saturday. While Jon Stewart was calling out the media for stoking fear, I was safely nestled on the couch with our three adopted pit bulls, Che, Bella Abzug, and Karma. Stewart’s words could easily describe the pit bull controversy: “The press can hold its magnifying glass up to our problems or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire.” The media hysteria surrounding American Pit Bull Terriers has been lighting them on fire — resulting in the mass euthanasia of these dogs simply because of their appearance. Instead, the media’s magnifying glass should focus on the real public safety issue: reckless owners of any dog.

It’s not much of a stretch to think Stewart would agree with applying his words to pit bulls. Though animal issues don’t come up often on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart is a known animal lover and has two pit bulls of his own — Shamsky and Monkey.

And in 2008, Jon Stewart commented on the status of pit bulls in the media when Sarah Palin delivered her famous “lipstick” joke. I relished Stewart’s take on the riddle, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?” Stewart answered: “One is unfairly maligned despite evidence showing they are no worse than any other dogs, while the other is an an artificial demographic no better or worse than any other kind of mom.”

In 2007, Stewart also attacked the media’s coverage of Michael Vick’s arrest for running a dog fighting ring; how they fixated on his gambling and time off the field rather than the fact that Vick killed dogs with his bare hands:

URGENT EAST VALLEY SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ON ALERT & IN DANGER : CUPCAKE

Hi, my name is ‘Cupcake’, and I’m a spayed female Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who’s nine months old.

I’m currently staying at the East Valley Animal Shelter at 14409 Van Owen Street in North Hollywood.
Their phone number is: (818) 756-9323.
My ID# is: A1087694.
My location at the shelter is: DF 36.

My previous owner gave me away. I’m not sure why, and so far my new owner hasn’t come to get me. I was just wandering around exploring when a nice couple took me off the street and brought me here. So I’m looking for a ‘forever home’ or somewhere I can stay until I find it.
At the shelter I’m a bit shy, but I’m really very playful, and I can also be mellow and cuddly. Of course, with the right training, I’ll be even more wonderful than I already am.
I do have a slightly challenging medical condition at the moment. It’s not life threatening, but it makes me look a little strange. Didn’t want to scare you off. It’s called a “cherry eye”, and it has something to do with one of my tear ducts. Don’t’ worry. It’s quite common and can be easily corrected with surgery.
I go up for adoption on the 17th if no one claims me before then. The shelter may not be able to keep me long after that though since they’re extremely full. It makes me a bit nervous. So, I hope you’ll come and see me real soon!
I just know we could have a lot of fun together. I’ll be your sweet treat.
Yours truly,
‘Cupcake’

ACTIVATE: Our response to FOX 11 NEW PET POLICY- from KARMA RESCUE

Dear fellow rescuers, Pit Lovers, and Dog Lovers in general,

As many of you might have heard, Fox 11 News in Los Angeles has instituted a new policy banning specific breeds (Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and Dobermans) from its Adopt-A-Dog segments. This is particularly upsetting to us since we have a long history with Fox and have placed a great many dogs, especially Pit Bulls, due to our appearance on its shows. In fact, Tony McEwing, one of the morning anchors, adopted one of our Pit Puppies when the dog appeared on his show. In addition, Dorothy Lucey has a rescued Pit-Mix, and Jillian Reynolds is a huge animal activist. Furthermore, Nigel Lythgoe, judge and producer of the Fox show, So You Think You Can Dance, recently adopted a Pit Bull (and Dalmatian) from us and bragged about his new family on Fox News.

Frankly, due to a lack of rules or supervision at their studio, it is surprising that an incident hasn’t happened sooner. Consequently, we sent Fox a list of safe-guards that they could implement to make the rescue segments much safer. We also sent the station statistics, supporting our contention that Pit Bulls are actually a very safe breed. However, we received an email back saying that they would not reverse the policy.

Since the breeds of dogs on their list are the ones that need the most help, it seems incomprehensible that they would simply ban those three breeds without discussing their decision with the rescue community, experts, etc. As a result, we will no longer be participating in those segments.

Although we would never ask other rescues not to appear on Fox News, since those appearances provide great exposure for dogs-in-need, we are asking that you express your shock and outrage to Fox for implementing such a narrow-minded ban. Please write letters, Tweet, Email, Call, – whatever you can do, so that Fox and other organizations don’t get away with this sort of bias and prejudice. After all, it is a fact that BSL does NOT work.

Below we have listed the names and contact information for the Fox brass, as well as that of the news anchors. It goes without saying that we should not be rude or threatening in our messages. These aren’t bad people, just sadly misinformed.

Thank you for your support.

PITStop Community Assist: BELLA!

We want to help Nisha find resolution regarding BELLA, a 4 year old pit bull that she recently ended up caring for, here in Southern California. Nisha is BELLA’s3rd guardian. BELLA’s 2nd owner is signing up for the Navy and can no longer care for BELLA. The 1st owner had to move into another place that could not accommodate a dog. Nisha does not want to drop her off to Los Angeles Animal Services because the holding time is 4 days max. She lives in the back house of BELLA’s 2nd owner.

She cannot take BELLA but she has been feeding her and allowing BELLA to sleep inside her house at night. She will try and hold out longer and find her a home. BELLA’s 2nd owner has completely washed his hands of her…sad. Nisha has noticed that BELLA has been rapidly losing weight. She is willing to drive BELLA to a vet appt but does not have the finances to currently subsidize a vet check-up.

Here is her plea:

My name is Nisha & I have been taking care of a 4 year old female Pittbull Mix that belongs to the neighbor in the front house where I live. She was given to him about 2 months ago and I have been feeding her and I can’t afford to feed her for the fact that I have 2 dogs of my own. She needs to be seen by a Vet ASAP, she’s been losing weight other than that she seems very active. She’s house trained and I let her in my house and never had any accidents. She’s a very sweet dog, she’s very good with my 16lb.& 4lb. dogs, but when she sees other dogs she is very vocal, I don’t know if it’s because she gets excited or if she will be aggressive, I can’t tell with her. Maybe she needs to go to a home without other dogs. I need help with her in finding a good loving home for her. If there is anyone out there that would like to adopt her please let me know. By the way her name is Bella. Thank you.
