WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : DOZER

Dozer (Formerly Known As Mikey):
An Adoption Story
By Tammy and Kevin Weaver

West Hollywood, circa 2008.

Newly engaged couple with lively exuberant red-nosed pocket pit were happily planning their wedding when they received tragic news — their beloved pit bull was diagnosed with a rare smooth-muscle cancer.

Compton, circa 2008.

A big white pup — part American bulldog and part pit — refuses to be a fighter and is tossed in a pallet yard with a broken leg. He is rescued by Downtown Dog Rescue, where he is known as Mikey.

We lost our pit bull Deuce to cancer a few months before our wedding in June 2009, and we were devastated. We thought that it would be a long, long time before we were ready to adopt another dog, but our downtown loft started to feel awfully empty without a tail-wagging occupant. So, we began the search for our new pup. We both knew we wanted another pit bull — any stereotypes, preconceptions, or fears we previously had regarding pits had been entirely dispelled by Deuce’s fierce loyalty, playfulness, and affection. Tammy, however, adamantly wanted another pocket pit (Deuce had only been 40 lbs), one that she would have no problem walking on a leash and that could sit in her lap like Deuce had.

We found a listing for Bradley, a three year-old medium-sized red-nosed pit, at Downtown Dog Rescue, contacted Lori, and set up a meeting, only one week before our wedding. Bradley was friendly enough, and at about 40 to 50 lbs, just the right size. “Bradley’s great with other dogs,” Lori told us, “Let me bring his buddy Mikey out to show you!” Out comes Big Mike, bounding up to us with puppy enthusiasm, and Mikey promptly attempts to lay his 75-pound self upside down onto Kevin’s lap. Done.

Now, 8 months later, Dozer is happily settled into his new home. He sleeps like no other dog we’ve ever seen (on his back with his four paws in the air), hangs out with Kevin every day (Kevin is a photographer who works out of the loft), loves car rides, trips […]

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : MAGGIE & TRIXIE

MAGGIE & TRIXIE
by Dorene E. Perkins

I got my first dog in 1980 when I was 14 years old. He was a beautiful stray American Eskimo Spitz/Samoyed mix, and my brother was outside on a beautiful summer day in the suburbs of Chicago, and along came this dog. My brother lured him into the house, unbeknownst to our mother who was at work. When she came home later that evening she heard barking. Then she saw this streak of white bounding towards her. The she asked (or rather shouted) “whose dog is this and where did it come from!” My brother sheepishly replied “I just opened the door and he came right in”. I was officially hooked.

Snow was the first dog I ever really came into contact with in my young life. The vet thought he was around 1-1/2 years old. We had a lot of fun with him for 12 years, on the day my sister got married, August 8, 1992, Snow had a massive stroke. My boyfriend (now my husband Mark) raced over and we took him to the vet and they stabilized him, but by Monday he was in worse shape than when we brought him in, so I called my family (minus my sister who was on her honeymoon in Hawaii) to let them know that he had to be put down, and ask if anyone would like to see him prior to that. I called the vet and gave them the okay, and my first beloved dog was gone.

My husband and I were married on October 9, 1993 and when we bought our first home in January 1994 I announced very tearfully that I had to have another dog, I couldn’t handle being without one any longer. In April, a litter of black Labrador Retrievers was born, and the weekend of July 4, 1994 we brought home Smokie Bear. He was a bundle of trouble!!! One year later, we adopted a sweet Rhodesian Ridgeback we named Daisy Mae, and I felt that our family was complete. I was wrong. Our neighbors’ cat had just had kittens and I fell in love with a sweet black kitty who I named Boris. Boris was raised with the dogs; therefore he was the most awesome cat ever. He would come when I called him, he loved to be around people, and he loved his two huge cousins. We acquired Rascal in 1999 from a friend of my mom who fell on hard times and had to move in with a friend who was highly allergic to cats. She asked if we could keep him for a year, and she thought she would be back on her feet.

We have had Rascal now for 11 years, and he is still […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

Another wonderful week has ended and it’s time to give thanks!

For this week, very pretty CASSIE leads the way since she has just been adopted! Another 61st St. Kennel success story! When we took her away from the squalor, we knew this pretty girl would find a home soon:

And life with new mom, Angela on their
first hike out together
looking very happy and with a new name Haiyaty!

How appropriate that the first group of people Haiyaty’s thanking, are the new generation of rescuers that helped with the clean-up at the 61st Street Kennels. Brought in by one of the hardest working women in rescue, Josie of B.A.R.K. (Beach Animals Reading With Kids) here are a new set of good hearted animal-advocates-in-training. Thank you all for your hard work! Downtown Dog Rescue couldn’t have made it all work without your assistance. Many of the dogs have gotten adopted and all of you have a hand in making many dogs wanted, happy and safe. Congratulations Chris, Brandon, Cory, Katie & Amanda for being an integral part of a successful rescue effort!

Another successful 61st St.Kennel Dogs adoption is our own dear little beagle/shepherd blended pup, Timmy! Downtown Dog Rescue pulled him and his sister out and Janet Cook’s rescue, Angel’s Heart got him adopted out!

Here’s Timmy the day he got pulled from the 61st Street Kennel:

And here he is being carried by his new dad!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : ATHENA!

ATHENA by Lindsey Rueff

When I turned 18, I was determined to do 3 things…Get a job, move out, and get a dog. One thing led to another and I was right where I wanted to be…well almost. I was out on my own but still hadn’t found that puppy I had been dreaming of. Living with roommates, there were always dogs and people in and out of the house. One day one of my roommates brought in his new dog, a huge 75 pound pit mix (Radar). We hit it off right away. Sadly Radar and his owner moved out a few months later. The day after he was gone, I knew I need to find my own pit bull. I searched on Petfinder and the first dog to show up was Athena.

I was instantly drawn to her. I printed all of her pictures, told everyone about the dog I was getting. I called Lori, told her I would like to come meet Athena, we set up an appt and off to LA I went. The second I saw Athena, I fell in love. There was this puppy with a huge head and such a tiny body (covered in mange). Lori told me about her past, and what it would take to heal her in the future. I was confident I could help turn this troubled little girl into a beautiful happy dog. Well, Lori wasn’t as sure about me as I was about Athena. Anyone who knows or has met Lori knows how much pride she takes in these animals. The love and care she holds in her heart for these animals is amazing and so refreshing.
Here I was an 18 year old girl, renting a house, wanting to take away one of her babies. Lori and I went back and forth for a couple of weeks, until I pursued her so much she finally believed I was trying to get Athena for all the right reasons. Lori then came to my house for her in-home visit. Everything went well and she left Athena with me. I was beyond thrilled to finally have my own dog, my own pit-bull.

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part I

I started helping DDR with fostering puppies last summer. Each Puppy has brought me a different learning experience and so much love and joy!

KOO-KOO CHANEL

Before the first one, “Ethel,” arrived, I went to purchase a crate for a 5-6 month old pup. Since I never crated a dog before it was a confusing experience to pick one out. I think it’s safe to say that the puppies did much better in crate training than I did, I’m still in crate training, four puppies later!

Billy drove Ethel over to my house, and when she jumped out of the car, it was obvious that her age had been a little miscalculated… She was bigger than my dogs…. probably more like 8-10 months old, so the crate I had purchased was too small. Back to the store in a hurry, to get a bigger one!
This girl came from South LA Shelter and was red listed, due to mange. Lori had her pulled and sent to the hospital for treatment, and then she came straight to my house. Her coat was dull and had spots of hair loss. Ethel quickly settled in with my dogs, and they had the best time playing. After a few days, she started itching again, and I had to take her to the hospital for another Mitaben bath. When I picked her up in the evening, she was exhausted and did not want to play or eat. I got so worried about her that I slept on the couch with her next to me on the floor. I woke up many times to wipe her runny nose. She was back to normal the next day, which was a huge relief!

Ethel’s chocolate brown coat quickly got shiny and beautiful. She became a stunning looking dog! I used to call her “Koo-Koo Chanel”: “Koo-Koo,” because of her sometimes crazy puppy behavior, and “Chanel” since she was so stylish!
On a trip to the Sequoias, I ran into two ladies who admired her and when they heard her story, wanted to adopt her. A few days later back in LA, I delivered Ethel to her new forever home in Manhattan Beach. Yes… I cried on my way back home. Since she was my first foster, it was hard to separate.

But in the evening, my sadness went to happiness when I received an email from her new family with this wonderful photo of her with her NEW name “Zoey”, and her NEW brother, together on her NEW bed 🙂

From red listed at the shelter to a NEW life!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : JACKSON (and PEEZU)!

Jackson meeting the DDR Dog Pack!

JACKSON by Megan Finley

In 2006 I convinced my boyfriend (now husband) to get me a dog for Christmas. I had my heart set on adopting a the often misunderstood pit bull. While I was researching the dog adoption process I couldn’t help but stumble upon a statistic that stated black, male dogs were the most commonly euthanized dog. It’s so common that this phenomenon even has a name- the “Black Dog Syndrome.” Black coated dogs so rarely get adopted that most no-kill shelters don’t even try to save them because over the years they’ve realized that it’s pointless battle. Right then I knew exactly what I wanted for Christmas. I ran a search on Petfinder.com and ran a for pit bulls and and found this guy…

(Jackson’s actual adoption picture)

Jackson was everything I wanted — a black, male, pit bull mix, and with his one broken ear he was the cutest dog I had ever seen! Fortunately for me Lori Weise the head of Downtown Dog Rescue — and now one of my favorite people — rescued him when he was five months old from the North Central Animal Shelter before he was to be put to sleep. Four months later I came along and adopted him.And at first it wasn’t easy. Within minutes of being in our apartment for the first time Jackson destroyed a table as he tried to attack the cat. And that dog and cat battle raged on for the entire first year (and then some). But with some nerves of steal and a few incidents of projectile pooping (I kid you not — flying cat poop) my husband and I finally got them to come together. Now they can often be found snoozing on the couch together!

(Diego the cat and Jackson)

In the last few years Jackson has grown up from a crazy and troublesome puppy to an highly intelligent and super sweet member of our family. He accompanies us on almost all our family vacations — He’s explored meteor craters in Texas, hiked the Sandstone Bluffs of New Mexico, went housboating on Lake Mead, ran through corn fields in Illinois and, of course, enjoyed our fabulous California beaches.

He’s also picked up a few more family members over the years. A few months after adopting Jackson, my best friend (and […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

The previous week was full of activity for DDR! Helping out the 61st Street Kennel dogs was on everyone’s mind. This venture had a happy ending – dogs were transported, bathed, shown, fostered and adopted! We couldnt do it all without the help of many, many people!

So, our newly adopted pup CHOCOLATE!!!!!! will do the honors this week!

Chocolate would like to extend a special thanks to Linda Hodges for the two wonderful PET BEDS she donated to DDR!

Special message from Lori Weise

Thank You to the Amanda Foundation, Retriever Rescue, Best Friends Animal Society, Heigl Foundation and Janet Cook from Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue and all of the foster people and adopters who came out last week to help us rescue 41 dogs out of the 61st Street kennel in a little over two weeks.

A monumental challenge for a small organization like Downtown Dog Rescue but we did it, with a lot of support from our volunteers and friends who came out to support us, transport, bathe, and take lots of dogs out to adoption.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Cornelius, “Dog Man” Austin who helped me assess over 30 dogs last Saturday at the 61st Street kennel.
