Community Pet Clinics
Since 2006, DDR has been offering free monthly spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, de-worming, microchipping, flea/tick control, and other health services for the pets of low-income families, partnering with veterinary service providers. These grassroots clinics provided more than just services—they built community. Now that we own and operate our own mobile clinic, we have the capacity to spay/neuter more than 200 pets per month. As a direct result, we are working with our community to reduce the number of unwanted litters, and controlling the spread of diseases.
Cat Box Clinic
To address the need for basic veterinary care for pet cats in low-income households, we created the “Cat Box Clinic.” Held one evening per month by appointment only, the clinic increases access to essential care for pet cats. While we don’t handle emergencies or surgeries, we focus on treating chronic conditions like skin and ear infections, mange, ringworm, upper respiratory infections, and we offer vaccinations, microchipping, and health exams.
Services are offered on a sliding scale, from free to low cost, depending on what families can afford, ensuring no one is turned away due to inability to pay. This pilot project is a small step toward expanding to multiple locations or providing more comprehensive services for South Los Angeles residents with pet cats. Currently, we have no grant or major funding and rely on community support. If you believe in systemic change for people with pets, please consider making a donation today!
