LORI’s CORNER/DDR PROGRAMS: CGC Test – Bring your dog! Free!

Downtown Dog Rescue invites you to come out to our Coliseum Dog Class this Sunday February 20th to have your Pit bull tested for Canine Good Citizenship Certification by Mark Tipton with AngelDogs Foundation.

There is no penalty for not passing and it’s a great way to find out what you need to practice with your dog to pass. Our goal is to certify more Pit bull type dogs living in South Los Angeles and the surrounding communities that often lack information and access to Canine Good Citizenship Certification. CGC certification is so important for anyone who rents and owns a pit bull type dog. Passing CGC could mean that your dog will be the exception to a “no pit bull” rule in an apartment or condo complex, keeping more dogs out of shelters!

If you have a social dog, friendly with people and other dogs and you are interested in testing for CGC RSVP

Lori@modernica.net We certified 10 dogs at our last meeting. Help us reach our goal of certifying 100 dogs in South Los Angeles!

The Coliseum Dog Class meets every Sunday at 9:30AM in the front of the entrance to the Coliseum off MLK blvd – (park at the Hoover lot)

Our class is the only location in South LA that tests dogs for CGC certification.

LORI’s CORNER: “I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up.-MLK Jr.”

“I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up. I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive goodwill will proclaim the rule of the land.”

Yesterday at our Coliseum Dog Class, the crew from the Pit Boss TV show came out to film Edgar and Queeny and the class. I was amazed at the turn out, 52 dogs came out to represent Dog Man and his wonderful work and to support Edgar. I guarantee you, the class members old and some new, did not come out to “just be on TV” each and every person and their dog(S) came out to show that we support each other and we believe, the pit bull terrier is first and foremost a dog.

When Dog Man made the turn, right, down into the Sports Arena, Clancy and I knew it was time for recall work. Wow, I thought to myself, this is going to be crazy to do off leash work with 52 dogs but as always, Dog Man was in control and everything turned out great, with help from Jordan and Debbie. Even Shorty and Hercules did some off leash recall for the show. When I looked out at the amazing group of dogs, almost all pit bulls, patiently sitting or laying down, row after row, waiting for their turn I was also so happy to see the diverse group of class members, old and young, and broad range of ethnicities, Korean, Black, Guatemalan, Mexican, Chinese, White, I’m sure that I’m missing some but this is what I saw. Everyone working together, towards one common goal, socializing their dogs, protecting the image of the pit bull terrier that is a breed of dog not different species. I like this statement on the Animal Farm Foundation website and hope that you pass this along to anyone who wants to put a label on all pit bulls. Like people, each dog is […]

LORI’S CORNER: READY TO WORK

On Sunday, Cynthia Bathurst from Best Friends came out to watch our Coliseum Class and what a class she watched! 36 dogs, all walking, jumping, running and working, without any fights! This is a big deal since some of the dogs in the class have leash or dog aggression issues or both. From 9:30-11:30 or longer, every Sunday, Cornelius “Dog Man” Austin, leads us on a course that runs from Figueroa and MLK blvd over to Vermont and back to the entrance of the Coliseum. We run the dogs through what we call our “urban agility course” over cement benches, walls, relay races and so much more! It’s a great work out for all the dogs and their handlers, one that Clancy looks forward to every week.

Cynthia leads the Safe + Humane Chicago program that promotes responsible dog handling by youth leaders for the community of dog owners who may not be able to afford traditional dog training classes. She is considering bringing a chapter to Los Angeles, where some of our youth handlers, Edgar and Jordan are being considered as potential leaders for their communities. Edgar discussed the challenges that he faces on a daily basis with his dog Queenie, living in Hawthorne where he is often approached by people who want to know if he is interested in fighting Queenie. Jordan lives near Crenshaw and has raised and trained his dog Pretty since she was a puppy. His goal is to become a professional dog training. A program sponsored by Best Friends in communities like South LA, Compton, Watts, Hawthorne, possibly Inglewood and Carson would do so much to prevent dog fighting, irresponsible breeding and animal cruelty! Stay tuned for more exciting information!

DDR YOUTH MATTER: Jordan Williams, DDR’s rising star on PIT BOSS!

Jordan Williams

We are proud to announce that one of our dedicated Downtown Dog Rescue Coliseum volunteers, Jordan Williams will be featured in this Saturday’s PIT BOSS show on Animal Planet!

Our weekly Sunday Pitbull class run by Dogman at the Coliseum is a place where two young men, Jordan, 14 years and his cousin Michael 15 years attend pitbull socialization classes every week. Both own pit bulls and have decided to spay+ neuter their dogs, they don’t believe in dog fighting and are great examples of two young people, growing up in a very violent South LA neighborhood, who do well in school and want to be successful in life along with their dogs. They are dedicated to being good examples of responsible pit bull owners. Jordan’s dog Pretty recently passed her CGC test and he received his certificate from the AKC.

In this episode, Shorty from Pit Boss assists Jordan’s efforts to try and convince his neighbor to neuter a pit bull responsible for multiple litters.

Please join us in witnessing Jordan’s shining moment
on Animal Planet’s PIT BOSS this weekend!

Keep Your Dog Social
-from the Downtown Dog Rescue website

“With humans, the pit bull is very easy to socialize but, since they tend to be very enthusiastic, they should be taught manners early on. A trained pit bull is often very social and loving with friends and strangers alike. As with most breeds, socialization with humans of all types should be part of the dog’s training for life. A pit bull that shows unprovoked human aggression, especially with children, is NOT typical of the breed and is showing very poor temperament. Such a dog should be thoroughly evaluated by a trainer or behaviorist experienced in the breed for a final determination of their temperament and recommendation on how to proceed. The pit bull is typically a people loving, intelligent and fun breed. Many excel at obedience training and dog sports such as agility, weight pull, Frisbee, and flyball. Due to their affinity with people, this breed is a good candidate for rescue and adoption, but potential homes need to be carefully screened to insure that the new owners understand and accept the responsibility of owning a pit bull. Media hysteria and bad owners have greatly damaged this breed and every incident involving a pit bull makes it worse for the entire breed and their owners, often prompting breed specific legislation or breed bans. Potential owners need to be informed of the pit bull’s correct temperament, and need to be prepared to deal with the issue of dog aggression. Most pit bulls have a high prey drive and may chase small animals or livestock. This is NOT a breed for everyone! The only way to repair the pit bull’s bad reputation is to keep them in the hands of responsible owners.”

With that said, we would like to make an enthusiastic plug for:
