ACTIVATE: SOUTHGATE 67 Update – Petey is on his way to recovery

When I first volunteered for Downtown Dog Rescue, one of the cases that Lori got involved with was the Marc De Luna catastrophe. 67 dogs whose owners paid De Luna to board their dogs at his “kennels,” were mostly unaware that their dogs were being boarded in hellish, animal cruelty type conditions.

These dogs were not walked, barely fed and were kept in their kennels stacked on top of each other. There were dogs that were dying, malnourished and severely ill. After the raid by Animal Control, many of the dogs were housed in the South East Area Animal Contol Authority (SEAACA) shelter.

Some of the dogs were so emaciated/ill that they had to be put down. The unlucky dogs boarded there were returned to their owners and some Rescues and Independent Rescuers came together to take some of the dogs. Downtown Dog Rescue took Roja and Danity, both have now been adopted. Whiskers and Tails and the Kris Kelly Foundation also took some dogs. Evidence of Love have more of the dogs that went unclaimed.

This case got media attention, the raid was covered on CBS2.

There was a letter writing campaign to have the City of South Gate prosecute De Luna to the full extent of animal cruelty laws. He was released on $5,000 bail. From what I’ve gathered, before this could go forward, Marc De Luna skipped town and is rumored to be in another state.

One of the cases that really made my heart heavy was the case of Petey. He was severely dehydrated and had a very painful looking skin condition. I always think of Petey when I think of Southgate 67 and Marc De Luna and it makes me sad.

It was a relief for me to be cc’d on an email to Lori from Petey’s foster today and get some updated videos and pictures of him moving about. Good hearted souls have stepped up to get Petey the care he needed.

Petey still seems to have issues but his foster mom Lisa Marie is helping him with that and we are hoping that he will be good to go for adoption at some point in the future. It’s a long road ahead. Petey still has a way to go in terms of his medical treatment, so if you are able to assist with this, please do.
