What’s All the Love About?

DOWNTOWN DOG RESCUE (D.D.R.) BELONGS TO A COMMUNITY THAT BELIEVES IN SECOND CHANCES. Since 1996 D.D.R. has administered innovative programs in Downtown L.A. to multiple communities that promote responsible pet ownership, empower individuals to become advocates for their companion animals and provide opportunities for compassionate dog lovers (friends, volunteers and donors) to make a difference in the lives of people and rescued “downtown” dogs.

D.D.R. is the only volunteer run program in California, and possibly the United States, specifically founded to assist homeless dog owners spay/neuter, vaccinate, license their dogs, as well as offer a variety of services including crisis care for the life of the dog.

Each year D.D.R. assists in rescuing and adopting out over 300 dogs.

Every year through “Operation Safety Net,” we keep hundreds of family dogs from entering the shelter system by providing low income dog owners & guardians with medical assistance, dog food & dog training support.

Show Your Love

Every dog that is adopted from D.D.R. allows another to be helped. Please show your love for such a unique cause by telling your friends and neighbors to adopt from Downtown Dog Rescue.

PITStop Community Assist: ROCKY, GSD IN NORTH CENTRAL

Found a friendly male shepherd mix this morning. He was on Valley Blvd in Los Angeles during morning traffic cars were honking at him but luckily we were able to get him out of traffic.
He had no I.D. and no one in the area knew where he came from. So we unfortunately had to take him to North Central Animal Shelter.
He is a large male german shep. mix, un neutered, seems on the younger side maybe 1 year old. Friendly demeanor & enjoyed being petted.
If anyone is looking for a shep. mix. please consider adopting him.
There were so many animals there. Very heartbreaking puppies crying as soon as you stopped petting them. Please Adopt. It makes ZERO sense to buy dogs you’re just giving money to people who could care less about the animals well being.

ROCKY – ID#A1159248

My name is Rocky and I am an unaltered male, tan German Shepherd Dog.

The shelter thinks I am about 1 year and 6 months old.
I weigh approximately 64 pounds.

I have been at the shelter since Oct 07, 2010.

Adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, all animals will be sterilized prior to release.

For more information about this animal, call:
North Central Animal Care and Control Center at (888) 452-7381

URGENT!!!!WEST LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: Romeo (A1118039) and Fiona (A1123702)

ROMEO NEEDS OUT BY TOMORROW  – THURSDAY!

Romeo (A1118039) and Fiona (A1123702) are two young dogs that need a home now! They have been at the West LA shelter for a long time, May 25 and June 13 respectively, and their time is up!! Both of them have been scheduled to be euthanized and need a last minute miracle by this Thursday, Oct 14th! Neither of them shows well at the shelter because they are active dogs and when they’ve been shown to potential adopters, they come across as too high energy because it’s usually the first time they’ve been out of their kennel in over a week or more! But once they get to let off some steam, both dogs settle down and are very nice. Fiona and Romeo both like to play fetch and are excellent candidates for some basic training to help channel their energy.

Romeo is about 14 months old and has basically grown up at the shelter. He’s a big pup! We’ve introduced him to a few dogs and he has been playful. He was not reactive to any dogs at the mobile adoption we took him to and was just very curious. He loves his tennis balls and enjoys hanging out in the kiddie pool! Romeo can get excited when he meets people but with training and consistency he learns quickly that jumping does not get him what he wants.

Fiona is about 15 months old and was found near some stables where she loved to run around with a couple of other dogs, including a feisty female terrier. She has a lot of energy at the shelter but when we took her to the mobile adoption she was fabulous. Very calm and engaging and good around all the people and dogs.

Please come meet them at the West Los Angeles Shelter 11361 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064 Tu-Sat 8-5, Sun 11-5.
You may also contact me, Debbie Fan at blackjacksbark@gmail.com to find out more about them.

MEDIA ALERT: DOWNTOWN DOG RESCUE: Best Friends Network Charity Winner

September 17, 2010, 5:16PM MT
By Ted Brewer, Best Friends staff writer

Pawsitive Alliance wins Network Charities grant for its innovative adoption program;
Downtown Dog Rescue is runner-up.

When Best Friends’ Network Charities launched last year, the impetus was to provide small animal welfare organizations with the support they needed to implement and sustain their life-saving programs, programs helping us achieve a time of No More Homeless Pets. As part of that support, the Network Charities announced in July it would be awarding $10,000 total in grant money to two participating charities with the most innovative, effective and collaborative programs that have already been established or are in the works. Network Charities received 44 applications for the grant.

“There were lots of great programs, and it was definitely a hard choice to pick the two winners,” says Lavanya Raju, Network Charities coordinator at Best Friends.

But the choice had to be made. We’re now pleased to announce that Pawsitive Alliance of the Seattle, Washington, area has won the $7,500 first-place grant. Runner up and winner of the second-place $2,500 grant was Downtown Dog Rescue of Los Angeles.

The program that garnered Pawsitive Alliance the win is simple, yet incredibly effective and collaborative: Bring animals from shelters and rescue groups located in rural areas around Washington, where there is an overabundance of adoptable pets, and showcase them at super adoption events in the Puget Sound area, where the human population is densest in the state and the animals stand the greatest chance of getting adopted. And that’s what Pawsitive Alliance has been doing since Andrea Logan and Yolanda Morris founded the group in 2005.

Shelters and rescue agencies in Washington’s rural areas are generally hard-pressed to find homes for the animals they care for — too many animals, not enough people to adopt. Pawsitive Alliance has helped fix that problem, by creating a venue for those adoption agencies to showcase their dogs to a captive audience. The alliance goes to great lengths to make the adoption events as fun and attractive as possible, which is drawing people to them who might be hesitant about going into a shelter and adopting.

DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: SUNSHINE

Sunshine
Catahoula Leopard Dog/Pit Bull Terrier Mix

Medium • Adult • Female

Meet Sunshine a 2 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog mixed with a pit bull. If you have ever dreamedof owning a herding pit bull mix type dog, she is your girl. This is a WONDERFULLY social dog with people and other dogs. She is an off leash type dog who would learn very quickly to go on off leash hikes. She plays with at least 12 other dogs at a time in our pack and understands rank and order in a dog pack very quickly. She is more intelligent than most of our knucklehead pit bulls and learned the rules quickly. She is approximately 50 lbs, spayed current on all vaccinations and microchipped. She was rescued by DDR from the South LA shelter. She was the shelter pick, all the volunteers loved her and did not want to see her euthanized. She went out to many mobile adoption events, including the Best Friends Super Adoption but was not adopted. In fact, she made such a positive impression on everyone that Karma Rescue who had already taken 8 dogs, offered to board her for two weeks at their vet’s office if DDR would take her. We gladly accepted and a ray of Sunshine entered our kennel the day she came to live with us. She plays well with Bruno, Medira and Sasha to name a few of the many DDR dogs that line up to play with this sweet girl. Please call Sandy at 818-407-4145 or e-mail me at Lori@modernica.net.

JO’S BARK: The Boxer’s Life Chapter 4 The Ultimate Command

by Boxer, Himself

Well folks, sorry about last weeks’ silence, but my paws were extremely too hot to be pushing keys on the board. . .

As my life story left off, The Dame gave De Kota the ultimate command – little did I know what I was in for. Here I thought I was going up against this 10 year fluffy rug that didn’t move and wouldn’t fight back – she just laid there in the corner – I couldn’t get a piece of the action – no skin no blood. . . .well, I digress back to days of the Ultimate Command . The Dame was getting ready to leave for the library, I never will forget that day.

The Dame and De Kota’s eyes met, cascaded concern was written all over De Kota’s face; I was waiting in anticipation for a good ol’ fashion poking fight. The Dame looked at De Kota and in a flustered voice said: “Well De Kota, I can’t babysit you 24 -7. You’re a Big Gurl. You’re just gonna have to gett’em.”

I saw a complete transformation in De Kota – the silver and white in her sexy fluffy coat glowed; the black tussles deepen and forged into sheer black nothingness – she glistened like the rays of an arc angel. . .then The Dame walk out the door and before it was closed I pounced for a good nose poke hair pullin’ fight.

I was not expecting what I received – Mz. De Kota has some fight about her after all – she nailed me in the ear, lanced my side, shredded my chest to pieces, slit my lip, scrapped up my face, and then nicked and chunked my legs up pretty good. Holy Bee-Gees. . . .That Dame sure knew how to give a command. Sheer luck on Mz. De Kota’s part. . . .o how my sorry butt for ever doubting a Chow-Shepherd mix let alone a mature momma like De Kota. . . .

After several weeks of jousting and realizing Mz. De Kota was no joke in her time let alone now, and, Mz. De Kota becoming more agitated, The Dame told De Kota that I was going to the Vets. . .all life spontaneously […]
