Stray Cat Alliance has supported the fight against the California Veterinary Medical Association (“CVMA”), veterinarians and individuals who simply want to save their furniture by performing and allowing the dismemberment of cats’ knuckles and claws – leaving them permanently maimed and defenseless. PITSTOP COMMUNITY ASSIST: Daisy’s a bloomin’ great dog!!!

DAISY’S A-BLOOMIN’ GREAT DOG!!

EXTRA HUGGABLE. WRINKLY-FACED. ALWAYS GRINNING.
SHE CHARMS EVERYONE SHE MEETS

HONESTLY, DAISY IS THE BEST FLOWER IN THE BUNCH

With her kisses, so sweet and plentiful; her nature so gentle; her smile radiating happiness, Daisy is one special blossom!!! In full bloom at 8 years of age, this mini St. Bernard mix (60 pounds), already house-trained, radiates happiness. She’s at her best cuddling up by your side — but she also enjoys playing with other pooches. (No cats, please.)
A bit of history : When the call came that our lovable Daisy was in serious trouble at the South L.A. shelter and needed rescue immediately, panic set in. But, those of us who had met this warm and wonderful girl at our mobile adoption (where she behaved perfectly) refused to let her die. Daisy is seeking new soil now — a permanent home — or even a temporary foster where she can thrive. If you can offer Daisy this opportunity, we guarantee that she will bring everlasting sunshine into your heart.

Please call Sue at (818) 857-6984 to meet this glowing girl.

Many thanks, Andrea (323) 363-4909

ACTIVATE: SB250: The Pet Responsibility Act is Back – Call your Assemblyperson’s office

SB 250 NEWS!! SB 250 is back for another vote!

Dear Friends:

We have great news regarding SB 250, The Pet Responsibility Act. The bill is going to be brought up for a final vote on the Assembly floor by Assemblyman Blumenfield, and we have an incredible opportunity to finally pass this important legislation to help combat pet overpopulation in our state.

We have taken two amendments to satisfy the concerns of leadership and we are very hopeful that the bill will be passed shortly and sent to the Governor for his signature. But first, we need your help… right away! Here is where we stand:

What does SB 250 do?

Quite simply, SB 250 requires owners of impounded, unlicensed dogs to spay or neuter their pet, and asks that family cats who roam outdoors be spayed or neutered.

Licensed dogs are not affected, unless the owner is repeatedly cited for animal control violations. The new amendments clarify the appeals process, and allow local jurisdictions to waive fees for low income Californians.

Please help, right away!

Even though you have not heard from me about SB 250 for many months, we have still been working on the bill and I didn’t want to send any updates until it was time for the next step. SB 250 will be voted on in the next day or two, and we are asking again for pet lovers across California to help pass this bill into law!

We are still killing over 500,000 pets per year in our state. PLEASE help us stop this horrendous situation.

Please call your Assemblymember TODAY, and if you cannot get through, please try again.

DDR YOUTH MATTER: Jordan Williams, DDR’s rising star on PIT BOSS!

Jordan Williams

We are proud to announce that one of our dedicated Downtown Dog Rescue Coliseum volunteers, Jordan Williams will be featured in this Saturday’s PIT BOSS show on Animal Planet!

Our weekly Sunday Pitbull class run by Dogman at the Coliseum is a place where two young men, Jordan, 14 years and his cousin Michael 15 years attend pitbull socialization classes every week. Both own pit bulls and have decided to spay+ neuter their dogs, they don’t believe in dog fighting and are great examples of two young people, growing up in a very violent South LA neighborhood, who do well in school and want to be successful in life along with their dogs. They are dedicated to being good examples of responsible pit bull owners. Jordan’s dog Pretty recently passed her CGC test and he received his certificate from the AKC.

In this episode, Shorty from Pit Boss assists Jordan’s efforts to try and convince his neighbor to neuter a pit bull responsible for multiple litters.

Please join us in witnessing Jordan’s shining moment
on Animal Planet’s PIT BOSS this weekend!

LORI’S CORNER: Spay/Neuter program works – A community responds

Last week was another very busy week for Downtown Dog Rescue.

On Friday, I met Alex at his spot and we drove over to the North Central Animal Shelter to get his third dog, “Fire” out of the shelter. Both Sunshine and Magic are doing very well since leaving the shelter last week and being spayed/neutered. They really missed Fire. Unfortunately, Fire bit an ACT while in the shelter so she had to be quarantined. She is a fearful little Pit bull -Chihuahua mix. She only loves her Daddy Alex although she is now OK with me since she seems to understand, I was there to help her. I took this photo of her just before we started our drive back to the spot where Alex lives with his dogs. All of the dogs were strays, starving, in very poor condition when he rescued them off the street. These are not the first set of dogs that he has rescued and it won’t be the last. Alex is a dog lover, a very kind person, who can’t see an animal suffer. Since he has been part of our DDR family since 2007, he has helped many dogs live a better life, including our Rex, a dog that he rescued but turned over to us because he knew we could find him a “better home”.

FIRE

On Saturday, we were back in Compton, in the park, offering free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchips for dogs living in the City of Compton. This was our second consecutive Saturday this month. Two week total, 58 surgeries, which comprised of a lot of large breed dogs including some beautiful pit bulls! BARK dogs came out again and read to the children in the park, which is a highlight for a lot of children who are terrified of dogs but through this program are learning that not every dog wants to chase and bite them.

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Black Dog Syndrome – Pearl

If you’ve never heard of Black Dog Syndrome (it’s a phenomenon that is well known to shelters and rescue organizations), it’s the idea that black dogs are much more difficult to find homes for than non-black dogs and they are often among the first dogs to be euthanized. If you think that this is a myth, just take a visit to your local shelter and test yourself to see which dogs you notice first. Chances are it’s the dogs that are lighter in color.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the two equally horrible intake photos of two dogs at South LA shelter. Which dog pops out at you first? The white one, right?

BENTLEY – ID#A1132925

ID#A1141500

Whether we mean to or not, black dogs get overlooked at the shelter. They are harder to see through kennel gates, they are harder to photograph, they tend to be “bigger” dogs – rottweilers, black lab/mixes, and of course pit bulls! There are also the stereotypes that black dogs are scary or evil and movies have a terrible history of portraying black dogs as mean and vicious. That’s a lot of stigma to have to overcome!

My point in all this is to say…next time you are thinking about adopting a dog, don’t forget about the black dogs. Of course personality should always come first, but if everything else is equal think about bringing the black dog home. Forget any stereotypes and instead, think about the positives…they don’t look as dirty as white dogs, black won’t clash with anything you own, and black is ALWAYS in style!

Pearl is one of the many black dogs that Downtown Dog Rescue has available for adoption. She is originally from South LA shelter (where I’m sure she had a horrible intake picture) and is now lucky enough to get to play with Lori’s whole pack. She is a submissive girl that gets along with all the dogs and even cats. Pearl is only 2 or 3 years old and would be a wonderful addition to any family.

Please contact lori@modernica.net to schedule a meeting to meet Pearl or any other of her wonderful black dogs!
