URGENT SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ON ALERT & IN DANGER : CECILIA

Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart –
it’s great big terrier time
A1132576 South L.A.

“CECILIA, YOU’RE BREAKING MY HEART…

I’M BEGGING YOU PLEASE TO COME HOME”

SO WONDERFUL THAT PAUL SIMON ACTUALLY WROTE A SONG FOR HER

SO CHARMING THAT SHE WILL STEAL YOUR HEART THE MOMENT YOU MEET HER.
Cecilia (A1132576, already spayed, 6 years old, terrier / Aussie mix, 41 pounds) is the perfect dog. When we first met her, she walked up to my husband and put her head in his lap. She was patient, delicious, adorable, polite. She’s passed her cat test (seems fine — non-chalant). She’s kenneled with other dogs, including a puppy that jumps all over her. Take one look at Cecilia and you will fall in love with this great big terrier — it’s guaranteed. Cecilia needs out of the shelter right now. Call today to save this elegant, affectionate, unusual lady.
(213) 485-0117 or (213) 485–0119.
And kindly let us know that she is free.
Many thanks,

URGENT EAST VALLEY SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ON ALERT & IN DANGER : CUPCAKE

Hi, my name is ‘Cupcake’, and I’m a spayed female Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who’s nine months old.

I’m currently staying at the East Valley Animal Shelter at 14409 Van Owen Street in North Hollywood.
Their phone number is: (818) 756-9323.
My ID# is: A1087694.
My location at the shelter is: DF 36.

My previous owner gave me away. I’m not sure why, and so far my new owner hasn’t come to get me. I was just wandering around exploring when a nice couple took me off the street and brought me here. So I’m looking for a ‘forever home’ or somewhere I can stay until I find it.
At the shelter I’m a bit shy, but I’m really very playful, and I can also be mellow and cuddly. Of course, with the right training, I’ll be even more wonderful than I already am.
I do have a slightly challenging medical condition at the moment. It’s not life threatening, but it makes me look a little strange. Didn’t want to scare you off. It’s called a “cherry eye”, and it has something to do with one of my tear ducts. Don’t’ worry. It’s quite common and can be easily corrected with surgery.
I go up for adoption on the 17th if no one claims me before then. The shelter may not be able to keep me long after that though since they’re extremely full. It makes me a bit nervous. So, I hope you’ll come and see me real soon!
I just know we could have a lot of fun together. I’ll be your sweet treat.
Yours truly,
‘Cupcake’

LORI’S CORNER: Rescuing dogs that take up “space”?

I recently had a good friend ask me why do we keep dogs like “Freeway”, since they are not adoptable and are “taking up space”. I guess what she meant is space in the kennel where we could rescue more dogs that are adoptable. I see her point, but I made a commitment to all of the dogs and this includes Freeway.

At our kennel, most all of the dogs are adoptable and are up for adoption. They might not all be what we call “Petco Dogs” , dogs that can go to Petco adoptions on Saturdays, but they do go out to adoptions and / or are shown by appointment at the kennel. However, I do have a handful of dogs that are off the table for adoption consideration and one of those dogs is Freeway. She is a special dog, one that lived with her homeless guardian almost all of her life. He went into a board and care situation, then Freeway was passed around for a bit and abused pretty badly during that time. I took her, biting, attacking other dogs, all of her! She wears a leash 24/7, which we don’t hold on to until we need to bring her in for a landing, into her run. She now trusts Billy and Richard and of course me. It’s all about keeping Freeway safe so that she can relax and enjoy herself. She “works” for Downtown Dog Rescue, helping us rehabilitate dogs that are adoptable. Same with Ms. Bertha, Simon and Chasui. They have a routine and they enjoy the dog pack life.

BERNADETTE

Our newest long shot adoption is Bernadette. She is extremely shy with new people, tentative with new dogs, just a ball of nerves. On top of all that, she is a black pit bull. What are her odds of being adopted? Pretty long, I’m guessing. I expect to have Bernadette live with us for years, not months. She will go up on Petfinder, where we might get an application this year for her but probably not. Should we not have taken her into the rescue and taken on more adoptable dogs, easier dogs?

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

It’s our favorite day of the week! FRIDAY where we give thanks to those of you who support the work we do at Downtown Dog Rescue!!!!

Helping us give thanks this week is one of the dogs that was rescued from the Southgate 67 animal cruelty case.

While Downtown Dog Rescue was not the one who adopted her out, we were one of the team cheerleaders for Roxy working hard to help her find and get her to her forever home and you know what?

She has!!!!!

Here’s Roxy hanging out at the DDR kennels one afternoon!

And here’s Roxy with her new family!!!!

Awww HAPPY DOG!

So Roxy — ready to help us out?

On behalf of my DDR, I would like to help them thank the following first responders for pledging their $30 to walk in this year’s STRUT YOUR MUTT at the Santa Monica Pier on September 19, 2010 at 8:30 AM. They all responded to Clancy’s call to walk with him and raise more money to save more South LA dogs dumped at the South LA shelter.

THE FAMILY DOG: Pets In Hot Cars

(click on graphic above for an enlarged view of document)
102o!
On an 85o day, it only takes ten minutes for the
inside of your car to reach 102o even when the windows
have been left open an inch or two.
Within 30 minutes, a car’s interior can reach 120o. When
the temperature outside is a pleasant 70o the inside of
your car may be as much as 20 degrees hotter.
Shade offers little protection on a hot day and moves with
the sun. Pets most at risk for hyperthermia (overheating):
young animals, elderly animals, overweight animals,
those with short muzzles and those with thick or
dark-colored coats.
A Form of Cruelty—Literally
Many states and local governments have laws that
prohibit leaving an animal unattended in a motor vehicle
under dangerous conditions, which include hot days.
Under these laws, police, animal control agents, peace
officers and others may be authorized to enter by
whatever means necessary to remove the animal. You
could have your car damaged, be charged with a crime,
and fined or imprisoned. It’s not worth it—don’t leave
your pet in the car!
Please leave your
pet at home in hot
weather!
If your dog is overcome by the heat
Bring down body temperature by soaking the animal in
cool (not ice) water, but make sure water does not get
into the mouth or nose of an unconscious animal. Seek
immediate veterinary care.
HOT WEATHER TRAVELING TIPS
• Get a veterinary checkup before traveling and make
sure you have the necessary vaccination certificates
for the area you will be visiting, as well as flea and
tick treatments.
• Carry a gallon thermos of cold water or bring along
a two-liter plastic bottle of water you froze the
night before.
• Exercise your pet during the coolest parts of the day
(dawn and dusk), and never immediately following
a meal.
• Hot asphalt and tar can burn sensitive paw pads.
Walk your pet on grass or dirt when possible.
• Provide shade when your pet is outside on a hot day.
Overheating Kills!
DON’T PUT YOUR PETS IN DANGER

ANIMAL WELFARE COMMUNITY: BOYCOTT the CIRCUS!

Did anyone see this off the 10 fwy? It’s where the 10 and 110fwy’s meet at the Pico exit (Staples Center exit) I think it means the Circus isn’t welcome in Downtown L.A.

PITStop Community Assist: PUPPIES on SKID ROW need homes

These are German Shorthair Pointers. They are in need of a home. They are about 5 weeks old right now. Mama needs a home too. Please pass this along if you know someone who may be interested or can help foster these babies.
If they are not adopted the owner wants to send them to Tijuana. They have sweet dispositions.
