THE FAMILY DOG: Fighting To Keep Our Dogs, an Operation SAFETY NET success story

by Alysha Ramirez

Alysha and Manny’s puppies!

My boyfriend, Manny and I were having a great time outside with our pitbulls when a dog approached my yard. My neighbors about 2 houses down would always let their dog roam the streets. Their dog would always bark at my dog and I always told them to get their dog, but they always refused.

The day we were outside, their dog managed to get into my yard, of course my pitbull was protecting his territory and bit the dog. After that happened the owner came to my yard and took their dog home. A little while later, they called Animal Control. They came out and said they had to take my dogs because they were aggressive. They also said that the neighbors said that my dogs went to their yard and attacked their dog which wasn’t true.

When I tried to get my pitbulls back, they refused to give them back because they were labeled as dangerous animals. My boyfriend and I were upset and we didn’t know what to do. While we were at the animal shelter we saw a poster that said DOWNTOWN DOG RESCUE. So we happened to call it and spoke to a lovely lady named Lori Weise. She happened to be the best and helped us get our dogs back and prove that they were not dangerous dogs.

So basically what I’m trying to say is thanks to Lori and Downtown Dog Rescue, I got my dogs back.

Pitbulls are the best kind of dogs you can have.

Editors Note: Alysha and Manny showed up for their Los Angeles Animal Services Administrative hearing but their neighbor was a no-show, so the good news? The case was dismissed. Another Operation Safety Net success story.

Lori’s Corner: Pepper, a dog that touched my heart

If there were ever a dog that I was tempted to keep even though she is so adoptable, it would be Pepper. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I knew, she needed to get out of her horrible situation.

Her story is that she was attacked by an aggressive dog and he tore part of her leg off. The person did not take her to a vet and the leg healed on its own, without any professional veterinarian care. I can only imagine the severe pain that this sweet dog endure and yet she still loves other dogs, plays really well on her three good legs and is learning to trust people. Who could blame her, consider, it was a person’s fault that she lost her leg due to carelessness and being overwhelmed with too many dogs on one property.

I have to admit, when I watch her play, really running hard, enjoying herself with all of her new friends, Sasha, Edwina, Charlie and Bruno, I get tears in my eyes. She is a dog that makes me want to do more for all of the other “Peppers” that are out there that need help. South Los Angeles, Watts and Compton are full of stray dogs and dogs that have been injured in dog fights, hit by cars and just plain neglect.

If you can’t adopt one of our dogs, please consider sponsoring a dog in need. Pepper is ready for her forever home, please spread the word about this wonderful dog!

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

We got a bit of thanking to very special DDR friends/supporters this week!
And we have an extra special sweetheart to do the honors —

Raising money for rescue work is a big challenge for small rescue’s like Downtown Dog Rescue. Coordinating an army of volunteers with volunteer coordinator, Sandy to help with events, errands and countless other rescue related tasks, Lori’s time is majorly impacted and thinking up ways to raise the money needed to do ALL of it is just one more thing to add to an already full plate. This is why when we get donations/support/event proceeds out of the blue, Lori and I are super elated and thankful!!!!!!!

This week we want to thank David Minkin, Nicole Bruckman, Robin Skov and Page Miller for being the wonderful rescue friendly souls they are and including DDR in their work/existing projects. Many of the events donate their proceeds to DDR. We want to do a shout out to the following folks and it will be headed by no other than our 61st street kennel success story…Mr. Larry!!!!!

Larry got adopted today and he is one of the 61st Street Kennel hoarding case that really has won a lot of DDR volunteer hearts! Here was poor Larry at an over-crowded kennel in South LA, tied to a tree 24/7….

And here is this sweet, intelligent and wonderful Larry in his new home!

Ok resting on your own personal doggy bed and playing with chewies!
Larry has finally found his home — but wait, we want to ask one final request!

Larry, are you ready to thank everyone and give them that winning happy smile you now will permanently have? LARRY SAYS YES — ok Larry – flash the smile and give the thanks!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to first thank my new family Marshall and Courtney!!!! YAY!!!!! I’ve found my forever home!

Also, I would like to thank the following people whose support of DDR, will continue to make rescue work happen for other dogs like me…. so…..

NICOLE BRUCKMAN!

THANK YOU for involving DDR with your A MUTE OF HOUNDS EXHIBITION at MELTDOWN GALLERY! 20% of proceeds from artwork sold is really a big deal for us + setting up an adoption event at the Gallery and just really coming up with great satellite events that encourage donations […]

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: What in a name: Baby Girl from West LA Shelter

What’s in a name: Baby Girl

This week I’m writing about a dog named Baby Girl. Now, you may have heard of former DDR dog Baby Girl that was one of the sweetest dogs around. Luckily, that Baby Girl was adopted and is in a wonderful forever home. I am not writing about DDR’s Baby Girl, but another Baby Girl, who is currently for adoption at West LA Shelter.

When I first met West LA’s Baby Girl, she immediately reminded me of DDR’s Baby Girl. OK, so one is black and the other is white. And yes, they obviously have the same name. But it’s their wonderful temperaments that are so similar. Both arrived super shy, under-socialized, and felt more comfortable around other dogs than people…but oh, so sweet and loving and wouldn’t hurt a fly.

So why feature West LA’s Baby Girl? Exactly for the reasons I mentioned above. She’s shy and under-socialized! As sweet as she is, this is what makes her a tough adoption. She went to the big Best Friend’s adoption event and it was clear that all the activity (loud noises, wind blowing, crowds of people) was overwhelming for her. At the shelter, different volunteers take her out of her kennel, but the variety of exposure she gets is limited. She needs a person that has the patience to help build her confidence and see her full potential.

When DDR’s Baby Girl arrived with Lori, she had the benefit of Lori spending lots of time with her to socialize her, introduce her to new things and help her come out of her shell so that she would be ready for her forever home.

West LA’s Baby Girl is looking for that same chance. It may not take long to get to get her out of her shell, but time can be a dog’s worst enemy at a city shelter and she’s been there since March 22. If you’re thinking about adopting, please consider meeting Baby Girl (ID# A1101726) at West LA Shelter.

DAMIEN’S RESCUE DIARY: #3 FIRST ADOPTION EVENT

This past week was a big one for Damien. On Thursday, volunteer Linda Bruce picked him up and took him over to the Amanda Foundation hospital where he was neutered. He was a good boy in the car, good on the leash and all the staff loved him. When I picked him up Thursday evening, he was pretty wiped out and happy to get into my car, safe in his crate, with Clancy in the passenger seat. He slept all the way home and was tired that evening. Friday, he was feeling good and proceeded with his normal routine.

Saturday was his first outing to Petco Adoptions. Again, he was a very good boy. Kathryn came out and took some great photos and Sandy told me that he was a good boy, very friendly with all the customers’ dogs and all the customers in the store. Only one sad point, he was head shy, as if someone hit him in the head if you make a sudden move with your hand anywhere near him. I’ve sure seen this when working with him at the kennel. He is getting better.

This is a great dog, very social, who doesn’t have one application yet. He is now up on Petfinder.com and is available and ready to start his new life. Please share Damien’s journey to his forever home with anyone you think might be interested in adopting him. Next week, his first Pit bull Training School class at the Coliseum!

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

FRIDAY IS HERE!!! And its time to give thanks!

We already thanked the Nishi Girl Scout Troop 12135 but we’re going to do something we havent dont before on our Friday thank you’s and thats posthumosly thank a PIT BULL, Who else? but DDR alum PIRATE ISHII!

We want to thank her for being a great ambassador for her breed! Without Pirate, Girl Scout Troop 12135 would not have the great experience that they continue to have with Pirate’s breed!

We have her fellow pitty doing the honors, Bruno, rescued from the South Los Angeles shelter due for euthanization, who got adopted this week!

Bruno got adopted by this week by DDR OG, Richard Tuttlemundo, so you KNOW Bruno’s going to lead a happy life…here’s an example of life beyond the kennels!

Ok Bruno, off the water, you have a job to do! Ready, set….go!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank Pirate Ishii and her mom Christine and her sisters, Ami and Miya for being wonderful examples of PitBull ambassadorship and guardianship!

(It’s always a two way street, strong, knowledgeable PitBull owners produce socialized, good PitBulls and Pirate is a great example of that!)

Below is a video of me playing with my DDR alum counterpart Precious (that also got adopted by another DDR OG, Debbie Fan!) — socialized Pit Bulls know how to play fair and good guardians know when to say enough of the rough housing!

Good job Bruno! Now water dog — go and play — your sister Alicia is calling!!!!!

WE’RE SAVING DOWNTOWN DOGS
ONE DOG AT A TIME
WITH YOUR HELP!

See everyone next week!
