Lori’s Corner: Coco Puff has found his home

On Saturday, Coco Puff, our older, mellow, white, big boy, American Pit bull Terrier was adopted after being in our rescue for three years, YAY!!! I’m sure that everyone who reading this post is wondering, well, who adopted Coco? Did he get a home with a nice family where he will have his own dog bed, toys and a forever home with kids and yard? Not exactly, and that’s definitely not any of the types of living situations that would have interested Coco if he could pick and give us his opinion. Sadly, in three years, this great dog never received one application despite being on three adoption sites, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, he was networked, yet no one wanted him. No one wanted him until Errol met Coco Puff. It was love at first site!

Errol is an experienced pit bull owner, who lived with a dog aggressive Male APBT named Petey for 12 years. He rescued Petey after an abusive owner let him go. The two were inseparable until Petey became ill and had to be humanely euthanized. I could see that it was tough for Errol to talk about Petey at our meeting. When I told him that Coco was not exactly cool with male dogs, it sure didn’t compare to the level of aggression he had endured with Petey. In fact, it seemed like Coco was going to be a walk in the park compared to his former dog, literally because that’s where they will be spending the majority of their time, the park. Errol lives outside and Coco is going to be his road dog. I wasn’t hesitant at all about the idea of Coco not having a traditional home, he was going with a great dog owner, with lots of hands on experience with the breed, and a track record of caring for a dog that surpassed most wealthy pit bull owners. I know a lot of stereotypical middle class dog owners who would not spend their life’s savings on their dog, something that Errol did with his last dog. Good dog owners come in a variety of socio-economic, education levels, as well as ethnicities.

Each month, Errol will be entitled to a small stipend to be used for whatever Coco might need. Downtown Dog Rescue will pay for any medical care that Coco might need for the rest of his life. None of this would have been possible without the introduction and support of Cynthia Larkin, a dog […]

South LA Shelter Rescue Me Spotlight: “As long as we’re together…side by side” – sung by South L.A. dogs Fitz & Floyd A1106888 / A1106889

AS LONG AS WE’RE TOGETHER…

THROUGH ALL KINDS OF WEATHER.
EVEN IF THE SKY SHOULD FALL

WE’LL TRAVEL THE ROAD… SIDE BY SIDE

And so they do. When Kristen and I walked them last weekend, their bodies were touching nearly the entire time!!!! These two dogs are truly bonded and the best of pals. When Floyd (A1106889, 4 year old lab mix) was heading back into their kennel first —

Fitz (A1106888, 7 year old, GS mix) cried. He is the protector of his big white, fluffy friend. And Floyd is the kisser of his big smoky-colored, soft-furred friend.

Kristen and I were so moved by the relationship between this pair of dogs. It was truly amazing. And we are sure that upon meeting them, you will fall instantly in love. These guys are super affectionate, utterly handsome and very smart. They deserve a wonderful new home, together.

If you can help, please call the South L.A. shelter at
(213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119.
And kindly pass along the good news to us —
that Fitz and Floyd are now with you, side by side.

Many thanks,
Kristen, Andrea & Mindy

South LA Shelter Rescue Me Spotlight: BAGUETTE-ON ALERT AND OUT OF TIME!

ON ALERT AND OUT OF TIME!

BAGUETTE, THE ULTIMATE LITTLE LOAF(ER)

HE’S ROUND, HE’S LONG, AND HE’S YUMMY

TAKE HIM HOME TODAY. AVAILABLE AT YOUR FAVORITE SOUTH L.A. SHELTER.

Baguette (A1107427, 2 years old, on alert since April 17th, for a case of demodex that is nearly gone) is a little sweetheart. When given a cat test yesterday, he shook in fear — and crawled right back into the ACT’s lap. Here’s a video (paste link into your browser, might have to click a couple of times to get it) of this bow-legged sweetheart, cuddling and prancing. No need to say more — just watch and he will surely capture your heart.

This poor baby has wounds from some previous encounter — with what we don’t know. But, it must have been awful. They are healed now and he is ready to be yours.

Baguette is too good to wait for a sale. Snatch him up today. Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119. And please let us know that you are taking him.

It’s so encouraging to hear good news and others always ask us when a dog disappears from the website.

Thanks much,
Andrea & Mindy

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT:Liberty – Officer gently pulled her out from underneath the car where she was hiding A1108335 South L.A.

LIBERTY

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

South L.A. officer gently tugged at the body underneath the car. Little by little, Liberty (A1108335, 2 year old female) emerged. It was love at first sight. Animal Control Officers see it all — and it is not a pretty sight. Neither was Liberty. She came in at “0” — meaning that she was beyond emaciated. Not to mention traumatized. When we first had her out, she would not move, would barely blink — hence, the name Liberty, as in “statue.”
But, look at this video and see the transformation once back in her ISO area. She loved having the other dogs around and felt so much more secure that her tail started to wag and wouldn’t stop.

And here she is meeting Magoo (A1102422), another dog we will be networking:

Liberty is responding so well to the love that she is getting at the South L.A. shelter. She’s put on a bit of weight; she’s starting to smile. But, she needs out as our ISO space is packed.

If you would like to give Liberty her liberty, call the south L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119. And please let us know so that we can spread the word.

Thanks so much,

URGENT! SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: SKITTLES

ON ALERT & EXCESSIVELY URGENT
Delicious Skittles dances as doctor declares her ringworm-free A1107639 South L.A. HOOOOORAAAAAAY!

FROM THIS

TO THIS

AND NOW TO THIS.

SKITTLES LOVES TO BE HELD AND TOUCHED AND KISSED. SHE COULDN’T BELIEVE SHE WAS OUTSIDE IN THE GRASS ONCE AGAIN.

Back in her ISO cage, Skittles (A1107639, 3 years old, doxie/chi mix, on alert as of 4/24 and needs out immediately!!!!!) waits. This angel has been kept way past her pts date because she is so darned sweet. When we open the door and peek in, her tail starts to thump and rap and tap against the metal sides. With excitement yet with serious concern, she looks up at us, pleading for her freedom.

Tests determined finally that Skittles does not have ringworm — and her fungus is disappearing at last!!! I held and petted her — and have been fine. She is not contagious. Skittles seems fine with other dogs that she has met through the bars of their cages and she sure is sweet with her people friends. Everyone loves her. Won’t you?

She’s begging you to call the South L.A. shelter at
(213)485-0117 or (213)485-0119 and save her life.
Please let us know that Skittles is your yummy girl now.
Many thanks,
Andrea & Mindy

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Senior Dog Spotlight!

Senior dogs…they have so much to offer. They’re great companions. They don’t need that much exercise and usually love just hanging out. Yet they are so hard to find homes for. Most people have the idea that once a dog hits 5 yrs old they are over the hill and it’s all down hill from there. And when a dog hits double digits, well…forget it, might as well call the doggie nursing home. Of course, this isn’t true at all and most senior dogs would probably like to let us humans know that it’s 10 years YOUNG, not 10 year old.

Look at DDR’s resident senior dog,Clancy. He’s about 13 years old and the epitome of “young at heart”. He still plays with the pack and when he meets a new puppy or adolescent dog, there’s a twinkle in his eye and spring in his step that is a joy to watch.

If you’re looking for a dog, please consider opening your heart to one of the many senior dogs out there looking for their final forever home. Downtown Dog has recently spotlighted Cooper and Sugar, both looking for new homes.
I’d like to spotlight a dog that I met at West LA shelter back in December. His name was Gio, a 10 yr old blind pit bull that was found wandering Pico Blvd. In his eleventh hour he was rescued by Rescue Reunion and transported to a foster home in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, after 3 months he needs a new foster or forever home…NOW.
Please read the following blog post from fellow shelter volunteer, Lola McKnight, about this sweet dog. And check out his video from when he was still at the shelter.

This incredible dog was rescued from the West LA shelter a couple of months ago on the day he was to be put down! Reunion Rescue decided to take a chance on an older blind Pit Bull because they saw what a wonderful dog he was and that he deserved to have happiness in his golden years.
Unfortunately the current foster situation isn’t working out due to NO FAULT of Jack’s. He is very chill with other dogs, but the foster’s dog doesn’t like Jack 🙁 so here we are now. Jack really needs some help! Reunion Rescue is a great operation and fully support their fosters.

DDR IN THE COMMUNITY: Earth Day at Laurel Elementary School

by Irene Soriano Brightman

Erin Viera from the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots Program requested DDR’s participation in Laurel Elementary’s EARTH DAY event held last Saturday, April 24, 2010!

We were the “PET ADOPTION” booth and what a fun day it was! “WE” involved me and volunteer and DDR foster mom, Brittany!

We had a majority of our dogs showing at PETCO-Pasadena so Brittany brought the little sweety she was fostering, Coco! She also brought her own cute chiwiwi, Peanut who always likes to come along for the ride!

Knowing that we would be interacting mostly with elementary school kids, we made sure to have fun things like stickers and colorful displays!

Brittany came up with the great idea of providing coloring pages of doggies for the kids to color.

The event was a lot of fun for the kids. Of course, everyone wanted to walk Coco and Peanut, they would all gather together and fawn over the two little sweeties. At times, the two little ones got overwhelmed with the kids but Brittany was good about letting the kids know to give them room to breathe. For the kids that played with either dog, they were given the choice of wearing I PLAYED WITH COCO or I PLAYED WITH PEANUT stickers. Many of the kids wanted both!
