South LA Shelter Rescue Me Spotlight : URGENT!!! OUT OF TIME!!: Ciecely A1092947

HEY, I’M A TOURIST ATTRACTION!

KNOWN FOR MY PASSIONATE PERSONALITY

MY VOLCANIC ACTIVITY, BRIMMING OVER WITH JOY

BUT, THOUGH NAMED CIECELY (SICILY IN ITALIAN),
I’VE GOT NO CONNECTIONS WITH THE MAFIA.
I’M 100% INNOCENT AND SWEET.

Female kennel # 1 is reserved for Ciecely (A1092947, 3 years old, on alert since March 7th — so totally out of time!!!) and her friends. This essence of happiness greets anyone who starts at that end of the shelter. The tail wags incessantly, the tongue reaches out to lick your fingers. Full of life — just like the island for which she was named. Ciecely’s long, low body and her intermittent big brown spots have all the energy of an erupting volcano. She’s working on her manners — but her happy carefree personality overflows all of her good intentions from time to time. Ciecely came in pregnant and has been spayed. She has been kenneled with a number of other dogs and done fine. This is a girl who has a lot to offer — and she is certainly giving it up to all. No wallflower here.

Please call the South L.A. shelter to save this bountiful bundle of love.
(213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119.
And kindly let us know that the happiness will continue.

Many thanks, Andrea & Mindy

One of our dear volunteers and main veterans

She serves as an evaluator for the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test we hold at the coliseum. She has evaluated many of the Pitbulls that have gone through DogMan’s Pitbull Sunday School. Even CLANCY passed with flying colors!
Lezle also runs her own dog training business called HANDLE WOOF CARE.
Here is a video of the final graduation

Thank you Lezle for all the work you do for the DDR dogs!!!!

A special thanks to TIM RICH for the video!

ONE MINUTE WITH A DDR VOLUNTEER: Teresa Schmidt

We at DDR love our DDR Adoption Show Team! They’re there every Saturday either hugging or petting one of our Pitties waiting to meet their future guardians. With Sandy at the helm, a group of volunteers help with transporting the dogs to PETCO, loading and unloading our supplies, cheerleading our pitties for the visitors that come.

We are lucky to have them as volunteers and on the blog, we will be featuring more volunteers for quick questions and quick answers…the next time you visit any of DDR’s adoption events, say hi to TERESA!

ANIMAL WELFARE COMMUNITY: THE PAWDCAST by Found Animals and SEAACA

Found Animals Foundation, Inc. (Found Animals) is a privately funded 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to minimizing shelter euthanasia. They’ve created amazing programs to increase what they call “live release rates” in shelters and an excellent example of this is their new and improved (remember their adorable webcams?) PAWDCAST.

It’s a web based series that had its premier yesterday and will run weekdays from 4:00 – 4 :30 pm. This is a collaborative project between Found Animals and Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA). SEAACA provides animal services for Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Buena Park, Downey, Lakewood, La Palma, Montebello, Norwalk, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, South Gate and Vernon.

The half hour show will feature among other offerings, the animals available for adoption at SEAACA (the inaugural webcast had a bunny, snake, cats and of course, dogs). It’s a great idea and fun to watch! The hosts yesterday were charming and one could tell from watching that they really loved animals.

Subsequent webisodes will feature SEAACA’s adoption annex aptly called The MODPAWD. Here is a listing of what they promise to offer for future webcast

“The PawdCast offers you an unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes of an animal care center to highlight the wide variety of great pets available for adoption, dispel myths about shelter animals, and provide a broad range of animal- and pet-centric entertainment.

Segments include:
-Hot Topics: focusing on global animal news and related stories
-Things Your Pet Wants You To Know: tips and tricks for pets, their owners, and their friends
-Ask The Expert: through a live chat room you can receive real-time answers about relevant pet problems and concerns
-Information on useful products, retail promotions and interesting must-haves”

BRAVO Found Animals Foundation and SEAACA! A timely endeavor that’s also technologically savvy! Here’s to its success and an increase in SEAACA’s adoption rates because of it!

So PITStop readers, tune in to THE PAWDCAST everyday from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm! When you need a break from that report you’ve been slaving on at work or if the kids have finally calmed down and taking their nappies, tune in!

ACTIVATE: SOUTHGATE 67 Update – Petey is on his way to recovery

When I first volunteered for Downtown Dog Rescue, one of the cases that Lori got involved with was the Marc De Luna catastrophe. 67 dogs whose owners paid De Luna to board their dogs at his “kennels,” were mostly unaware that their dogs were being boarded in hellish, animal cruelty type conditions.

These dogs were not walked, barely fed and were kept in their kennels stacked on top of each other. There were dogs that were dying, malnourished and severely ill. After the raid by Animal Control, many of the dogs were housed in the South East Area Animal Contol Authority (SEAACA) shelter.

Some of the dogs were so emaciated/ill that they had to be put down. The unlucky dogs boarded there were returned to their owners and some Rescues and Independent Rescuers came together to take some of the dogs. Downtown Dog Rescue took Roja and Danity, both have now been adopted. Whiskers and Tails and the Kris Kelly Foundation also took some dogs. Evidence of Love have more of the dogs that went unclaimed.

This case got media attention, the raid was covered on CBS2.

There was a letter writing campaign to have the City of South Gate prosecute De Luna to the full extent of animal cruelty laws. He was released on $5,000 bail. From what I’ve gathered, before this could go forward, Marc De Luna skipped town and is rumored to be in another state.

One of the cases that really made my heart heavy was the case of Petey. He was severely dehydrated and had a very painful looking skin condition. I always think of Petey when I think of Southgate 67 and Marc De Luna and it makes me sad.

It was a relief for me to be cc’d on an email to Lori from Petey’s foster today and get some updated videos and pictures of him moving about. Good hearted souls have stepped up to get Petey the care he needed.

Petey still seems to have issues but his foster mom Lisa Marie is helping him with that and […]

ANIMAL WELFARE COMMUNITY: Animal Care for Artists Initiative (ACAI) interview with Founder Laura Menck

Interview by Irene Soriano Brightman, PITStop Editor

Downtown Dog Rescue is very pleased to feature an interview with Laura Menck, the founder of Animal Care for Artists Initiative (ACAI) based here in Southern California. Who does ACAI serve and what service do they provide? The mission statement says it all – “To assist low income individuals, employed in the arts, in covering the cost of medical care for their animal companions.”

It is a much needed service for a segment of an oftentimes overlooked workforce. One can be a “struggling artist” and understand what “financial challenges” can mean and one can be a “working artist” and still belong to a sector that doesn’t bring in a high earning punch and keep one “financially challenged.”

Many in the animation industry have recently felt the crunch with departments getting downsized plus massive layoffs have occurred in various creative fields. When worrying about rent and food, vet bills become an added burden to an already alarming financial situation. For many artists, pets provide comfort, companionship and oftentimes inspiration that help grow their artistic inclinations and projects (Moby is an example and poet, Mary Oliver! While they might not need ACAI’s services, I wonder if they would help fund it!). When our companions get ill and we’re financially strapped (I’ve been there!), the service that ACAI provides becomes invaluable.

ACAI’s mascot, Dolly – Laura’s American Bulldog

Tell us about yourself, your interest in the arts, artists, animals, LA?

Fortunately, I grew up in a family that loves the arts and animals and, thus, I became an animal welfare advocate and volunteer. I moved to L.A. three years ago to marry a local musician and community involvement is very important so I became involved right away volunteering with various rescues and the LAAS spay/neuter committee. I work at UCLA Healthcare with patients who have asthma and emphysema so I want to make sure that my time outside of work is spent helping animals. I am also a year away from completing my graduate degree in public policy and nonprofit management so I hope to bring a lifetime of service to our Los Angeles community through that.

What was the catalyst that […]

ACTIVATE: Top 10 Reasons To Adopt A Senior Dog

by Irene Soriano Brightman

I have 2 senior dogs, my 13 year old Miniature Schnauzer, Mackie & 11 year old Dachshund, Cadi. Before I got these two lovelies, I had Ocha, a Maltese who was about 13 yrs old when she passed and Sophie, another Dachshund mix who was about 14 yrs old when she passed. I also served as a caretaker to a wonderful 15 year old Rottweiler, Radar who just passed last month. He was a sweet old boy who “calmed” me down during stressful days and I miss his sweet disposition very much.

Cadi

Mackie

Radar

Senior dogs are a joy…they kinda putz around the house all old and sweet. They like to cuddle and dont need super activity which is excellent for me, a writer, who’s always behind a book, watching a flick or locked behind my computer screen.

I’ve read many cases of senior dogs being dumped in the shelters due to their advanced age. I could never see myself doing this but I realize that for financially challenged guardians with limited incomes who cannot afford the medical bills incurred by a senior pet that becomes ill, this may be the only alternative they think they have.

Now it’s a different story if a senior dog is dumped because owners want to make room for a young pup or younger dog in the household. Now that is just…well…sad. It tugs at my heart when I hear stories of older dogs made to live out their final days in a cold shelter run or worse, be put to sleep because the odds are against them in terms of getting adopted.

So this is my pitch for the older dogs, I know that Downtown Dog Rescue has a couple of senior dogs that need homes like Charlie. Please consider him, and the others when you think of getting a new companion. We are also looking for a foster for him…
