WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : ATHENA!

ATHENA by Lindsey Rueff

When I turned 18, I was determined to do 3 things…Get a job, move out, and get a dog. One thing led to another and I was right where I wanted to be…well almost. I was out on my own but still hadn’t found that puppy I had been dreaming of. Living with roommates, there were always dogs and people in and out of the house. One day one of my roommates brought in his new dog, a huge 75 pound pit mix (Radar). We hit it off right away. Sadly Radar and his owner moved out a few months later. The day after he was gone, I knew I need to find my own pit bull. I searched on Petfinder and the first dog to show up was Athena.

I was instantly drawn to her. I printed all of her pictures, told everyone about the dog I was getting. I called Lori, told her I would like to come meet Athena, we set up an appt and off to LA I went. The second I saw Athena, I fell in love. There was this puppy with a huge head and such a tiny body (covered in mange). Lori told me about her past, and what it would take to heal her in the future. I was confident I could help turn this troubled little girl into a beautiful happy dog. Well, Lori wasn’t as sure about me as I was about Athena. Anyone who knows or has met Lori knows how much pride she takes in these animals. The love and care she holds in her heart for these animals is amazing and so refreshing.
Here I was an 18 year old girl, renting a house, wanting to take away one of her babies. Lori and I went back and forth for a couple of weeks, until I pursued her so much she finally believed I was trying to get Athena for all the right reasons. Lori then came to my house for her in-home visit. Everything went well and she left Athena with me. I was beyond thrilled to finally have my own dog, my own pit-bull.

LORI’S CORNER: Introducing New Dogs into our pack

AMANDA
ASKIM
When we take in a new dog, it’s always a week or two, before we introduce the new dog into our pack of dogs at the kennel. For some dogs, the introduction moves very quickly, in the case of Danity, it was clear immediately, she loves all dogs. In other cases, it’s more of what Clancy has already told me, as in Askim’s case, he is already cool and I have nothing to worry about. More often, we take in dogs like Precious or Amanda, clearly abused + neglected, underweight, requiring medical attention before we can start with any dog introductions.

One of the most common questions that I get e-mailed to me or asked in our Sunday Pit bull class is, “How do I know that my pit bull won’t fight if I let him go off leash with a dog(s) that I don’t know?” My answer is always the same, how well do you know your dog? When we introduce a pit bull, or really any new dog into our existing pack, we put a few trusted dogs that we know really well. My dog Clancy usually serves as the initial evaluator of the new dog, often conducted on leash, then when we do decide to test the new dog with a few dogs, we usually select a dog like Chasui because he is not playful and can co-exist with just about any dog in the yard and absolutely knows when to back away from a dog who is nervous and might become aggressive. Another dog that we use a lot if Cookie, who is often the first dog that most of our new dogs meet. Cookie is wonderful at greeting a dog slowly and understanding the new dog’s play style. Cookie can also just co-exist in the yard without playing, allowing the new dog to investigate and relax before the play begins.

DANITY
Now that Danity has been in our rescue for a while, we also use her to try out new dogs. She is more high energy, like Sasha and enjoys chasing. My young pit bull Curtis who is very dog friendly but almost feral with people is the best, he is a pusher. He likes to do a lot of investigating which can stress a new dog out and lead to a some aggression but Curtis always knows when enough is enough and he will back away from the new dog, opening up some space. When we want to move to the next level, we bring out Edwina, Freeway, and eventually […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

What a wonderful week! Another successful 61st Street Kennel adoption will be doing the honors today by the name of JET! Looking stately and happy in this picture taken by his guardians at the Southern California Retriever Rescue, he would like to say THANKS!

JET’s first THANK YOU goes out to the wonderful people at NATURAL BALANCE Pet Foods who donated dog food to us. Feeding 25+ dogs is not a joke on the rescue’s wallet so we’re always happy to receive the support of Pet Food companies like Natural Balance.

Jet would now like to also thank BEST FRIENDS – LA Programs for the generous donation of treats, dog food and toys! And of course their wonderful volunteer, Gayle Alexander for dropping them off to the kennels…the dogs loved everything!

And JET gives final thanks to his adoption rescue –

for finding him a new home!

DDR pulled him out of the 61st Street Kennels and this is
what he looked like then….

SC Golden Retriever Rescue took him in and started the healing process for Jet…so he could rest and rejuvenate…

Pit Bull ResCUES: Spotlight on Fresno Bully Rescue

About PITStop’s Pit Bull ResCUES:
Rescue work is done best when a collaborative spirit guides our work. For this new section of PITStop, we will visit other Pit Bull specific rescues and see what great work is being done and hopefully we can learn from each other and together, help a misunderstood breed of dogs find homes. For this first installation of ResCUES, we go up to our Northern California friends in Fresno to visit Fresno Bully Rescue in their efforts to regroup and resurrect as a stronger more financially sound rescue. They formulated the successful Saving the KissBulls Project and rallied community members in Fresno to come together and help renovate the kennels for their Kissbulls! Congratulations FBR! You are a true inspiration to us here at Downtown Dog Rescue!

FRESNO BULLY RESCUE
by Bridgette Boothe, Director

In June of 2008, having two pit bulls of their own, Ryan and Bridgette Boothe realized their passion for this wonderful breed and had considered starting a rescue of their own. After searching the Internet to see if a bully breed rescue already exsisted, they came across a Craig’s List Posting for Fresno Bully Rescue (FBR) calling for volunteers. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to get involved.

Fresno Bully Rescue was located in a parking lot in Downtown Fresno, California. This was a young rescue, established in May 2008. Ryan and his wife, Bridgette were the very first volunteers to ever come out. At the time, there were only about 12 dogs at the center. It was clear that the people involved had big hearts and tons of passion, but structure, organization and funding were its downfall.

The center moved to it’s new, larger location in February 2009. This new place was the ideal location for the dogs to thrive, surrounded by peaceful orchards on about an acre lot. Unfortunately things did not go as well as planned. Within a few months FBR had no funding, they had exhausted their resources and support within the community, and all hope was fading. Volunteers quit coming because of the poor conditions of the grounds and lack of stable management. Facing eviction, and overwhelmed with 60+ dogs now at the center, FBR needed a change, and fast!

With Ryan owning and operating his own business for over 10 years, and Bridgette with her degree in Marketing and Graphic Design, they felt they had the skills to restructure and run the center in a successful direction. Most of the previous boards members were removed or had left and new board members were brought in. The center had to be […]

DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: NERO!

NERO

Life in the 61st Street Kennels

Meet Nero, a 4-5 year old Spaniel mix who weighs approximately 45lbs. He is a wonderful dog, so deserving of a good home considering where he came from. When we first met Nero, he was living in a kennel with 80+ other dogs, crowded on to a property where there was very little good for the dogs. Yes, they were fed and had water, but that’s about it. He was in a run, in the dark, 24/7 with two very dog aggressive dogs on both sides of his run. He was beyond nervous and very traumatized by the constant barking. While living at this kennel, he was never walked, no one petted him, bathed him, or really cared about him, he was just another dog on the property. In fact, no one there even took the time to give him a name. He was picked up by the kennel owner, off the street in South Central LA. We are guessing he was a stray because he is a jumper.

Life with Downtown Dog Rescue

If you are considering adopting Nero, we ask that you either crate him when you are not home, or have an adequately fenced yard, otherwise, he is a really good boy who has been neutered and vaccinated. He was in a foster home but the person can’t keep him anymore and doesn’t have time to work with him. Right now, he is living back in a kennel and needs a forever home or a foster who cares enough to understand what he has been through.

SMILING ABOUT MY NEW LIFE
IN SOMEONE’S HOME

Nero is housetrained, loves riding in the car and is ready now to be adopted.
Nero is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part II

TRAVIS
I picked up Travis from the animal hospital about a month ago to come and stay with us to heal up and get healthy. This little pup had a rough start in life and had been attacked multiple times by other dogs.

Hi – I am Travis, the cutest puppy ever! I know that for a fact because people stop me on the street all the time to tell me how beautiful I am. I’M HOT!!
I’m learning super quick. I figured out the doggy door myself with the cone and everything. I love people, they are so much fun! I like to play in the sun with Sass & Princess, but if it’s cold and rainy, I rather stay inside and cuddle. I am officially house broken now and can hold it all night! I am extremely comfy in a crate since I had to spend a lot of quality time in there to heal up. I’m growing really fast because I LOVE FOOD!

I will soon join Lori’s pack downtown to play with all the dogs and go out on adoption events.
