LORI’S CORNER: Super Adoption was a Super Saturday!

On Saturday, we brought out a lot of dogs that we had rescued from a kennel that was closing. The owner of the kennel had asked for help in placing close to 100 dogs before they had to move all the dogs to some not so terrific places. Sandy organized the volunteers to come out to Petco where we had every breed except pit bulls this past Saturday. Many of the 40 + dogs that we have rescued from this facility have been placed in breed rescues, in foster homes and a few in forever homes. We still have lots of dogs that need foster and forever homes including one special old shepherd who is about 12 years old. I want to thank the Amanda Foundation, Best Friends and the Heigl Foundation for helping Downtown Dog Rescue taking some of these dogs out of an over crowded situation. There still is a lot more work to do. The dogs that we did get out are all so grateful to be on the road to their forever homes! What a great team we had on Saturday, evaluating, transporting, bathing, and showing the dogs at Petco. A special thank you to everyone who showed up to foster a dog so that no dog had to go back to the kennel.

Beautiful Cassie who still needs a home

“Trouble” never game me one minute of trouble!
He is now in his forever home in Santa Monica.

Happy puppy and new family!

LORI’S CORNER: Clancy

Check out Clancy the day he passed his CGC test, thoroughly tired and happy ! AMAZING, a 13 year old rescued fighting dog could lead a pack of dogs and be a Canine Good Citizen.

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

Here are our DDR Shout Outs for January 29, 2010:

Thanks so much to the AMANDA FOUNDATION for helping us get lots of dogs spayed and neutered at a very low cost. They have also helped us maximize our donation dollars when they treat our injured or sick dogs and the dog that belong to dog owners in our Operation Safety Net Program. They have brought out their spay/neuter mobile to two of our past events:

THANK YOU AMANDA FOUNDATION!
===

Every Saturday, it’s a fun party when DDR volunteers congregate and be part time handlers for the dogs we want to show for adoption. They are part of the DDR crew that we can count on to help Sandy, our Volunteer & Adoption Coordinator manage the different personalities, barking pitch and poo/pee duty at Petco every weekend. THANK YOU SO MUCH! DDR can’t do the adoptions without you!

Feature for the week: EFFIE CHANG

1) How long have you been doing the weekly adoption events at PETCO?

I think I started last year around June.

2) Is there a DDR dog that has been adopted that you still think about?

There’s actually quite a few. Sherman – his face is just unforgettable. Charlie – very sweet. China – very sweet also. Nike and Baby – these 2 siblings are the best. Mini/Cookie – I had her for 2 weeks but because of opposition from my Dad, I was unable to keep her. But she is in good hands; I know Rosalie will take good care of her. And to be honest, I think of all of them, and hope that they are happy and well taken care of in their new homes.

3) How did you hear about DDR?

Through my therapist.

4) How many pets do you have?

I had a Sheltie and a Siamese, both passed away of old age. At present, […]

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Agility Dog! SASHA

I’ve been taking my shelter dog, Dante, to agility class for the past year. For those of you that don’t know, agility is a sport where the dog and owner have to maneuver a series of obstacles as a team. The obstacles can include jumps, ramps, weave poles, and tunnels. It’s been a great way for Dante and I to have fun and strengthen our relationship. It’s even helped him get over some growly dog issues he’s had.

As I was driving home from class tonight I couldn’t get Sasha, a DDR dog, out of my mind. Sasha would be the PERFECT agility dog! She’s athletic, focused, motivated, and is a wonderfully balanced dog. (This is one of Lori’s “go to” dog testers when introducing new dogs to the pack.) Sasha’s been with Lori for about two years now. Before that she was with another rescue, and before that, the East Valley shelter. That’s a lot of bouncing around for a young dog! And that seems to be the only “problem” with her…she has a lot of energy and bounces around. Sasha would thrive in a sport like agility! High-energy dogs need a place to channel their energy and agility is a great combination of physical and mental stimulation.

Ok, so maybe you’re thinking, “but I don’t want to do agility, so maybe Sasha isn’t the right dog for me.” Not so fast. While Sasha’s athleticism and brains make her a great candidate for agility or other dog sports, Sasha would be perfectly happy going to the dog park, hiking, running, or going on long walks. She is a great dog that is ready for a forever home. And you never know, she just might inspire you to give agility a try.

MIA’S DOG TREATS:LEASH WALKING A STREET DOG

I’m sure that everyone who has adopted a street dog has faced the challenge of leash walking.

“Walking” is not exactly the right word to use; it’s more like LET’S ROAM THE STREETS!!
Princess is little and only 46 pounds. But she is one strong lady, and with her high energy level AND her prey drive, on a scale from 1-10, she would score 11, or maybe even 12!
Sass was very excited having company on walks, so it was quite a daily adventure and a workout for me, to say the least!
When I say that I purchased every collar on the market for Princess, I mean it. I got the prong collar that did not work well, because she would continue to pull and tear up her throat. Not good.

Same with chokers – she would pull and choke herself without any result in a positive direction. The “no pull harness” was a joke- she did not even feel it! I added the backpack after watching Cesar Millan on the Dog Whisperer (yes, I Netflixed EVERY season of the show). Actually, I even purchased the “Illusion” collar from Cesar’s website. I have quite a collection these days, thanks to Princess!
The backpack was supposed to drain her energy more quickly, but I think it just made her stronger instead. She definitely became more focused, carrying the pack, but it was more like she was training for the Olympics with extreme determination. The “Gentle Leader” was the winner with her—it wasn’t perfect, but it worked better than anything else.

At one point, a friend of mine offered to show me how to work with her on hikes. Out in nature, her prey drive kicks in, of course, so that is a whole different challenge. Since my friend is a very fit & muscular guy who owns three very well behaved pit bulls, I was happy to take him up on the offer. I thought it would be a great learning experience for me, as well as for Princess.
I had Sass off-leash, and my friend had Princess on a leash. He rejected using the “Gentle Leader,” saying, “…she is so little; I’m used to the big strong guys.” He was quickly breathing more heavily than Princess […]

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : RUDY!

The family that Rudy lived with had to deal with their home being in foreclosure,
when they moved, they didn’t take him, tied him in the yard and left him there

RUDYDOG by Bethany Winters

Rudy with his new family!

Edie lived with our family for eleven long years. When we were told that she had extensive lung cancer, and would have to be put down the next day, to say that we were devastated would be an understatement. We walked around in a daze for weeks – two to be exact – until it dawned on us that the only way our family was going to recover from this loss, would be to adopt another dog.

I sat down to write a letter to online adoption services. Edie was a rescue, and a pit-mix, and although age, size, color and breed didn’t really matter to us, what did matter was demeanor; we have two little boys ages 3 and 5, as well as a thirteen year old cat. I included this in my letter, along with the fact that I could not, under any circumstances adopt an aggressive dog. The responses were few and far between, and the ones that I did receive told me that they didn’t ‘know’ their dogs well enough to say how they would behave with young children.

I then received a response from DDR, telling me to call Lori, which I did straight away. She told me that there was a dog I should meet…his name was Rudy. Rudy’s family’s home was in foreclosure, and when they were unable to take him upon moving, they tied him up in the yard and left him there. He waited…and waited, but they never returned. Lori received a picture of Rudy waiting in front of his house and went to get Rudy that same day.

We piled in the car and went to DDR. Rudy was big – and mellow. In retrospect I think he was just indifferent to people (besides Lori) for fear […]

LORI’S CORNER: Marc De Luna Dogs

Roja

Danity

Back in December, 67 dogs were seized by Animal Control in a small warehouse in South Gate. The owner of this “kennel” was Marc De Luna. It was on the news, detailing the horrible conditions that he kept the dogs in. Most of the dogs were crated 24/7, never allowed outside of the warehouse and definitely never allowed to play in a pack like our dogs. The details are horrific, I still have the photo of the first dog that I saw “Petey” in my mind. No hair, covered in mange, skin and bones, so sad. We decided to help and take two of the dogs that survived.

First came Roja a WONDERFUL, mellow, sweetheart, who loves all people and other dogs, even kitties. On Saturday, we took Danity into our rescue. What a different girl! Danity is high energy, loves to play and is already out in our pack with all the dogs, playing, running up the ladders, following all the dogs around, learning the rules of our kennel. When I see how happy these two dogs are now, it’s hard for me to imagine what hell they lived through for 6 months at that South Gate kennel, locked up, day after day in their crates, covered in mange.

Both dogs are now available for adoption. Roja could easily be an only dog or live with another quiet dog. She comes home with me every night and loves all of my older dogs. This is a great dog for someone who lives in a loft or apartment. She enjoys her walks at lunch time with Clancy at the park and rides in the car. Danity is the complete opposite. She would need another playful dog in the home. She is a “dog park dog”! There is no time table on these dogs, we will not rush to adopt them out but both dogs are truly ready for their forever homes and so deserving of a good life!
