LORI’S CORNER: Super Adoption was a Super Saturday!

On Saturday, we brought out a lot of dogs that we had rescued from a kennel that was closing. The owner of the kennel had asked for help in placing close to 100 dogs before they had to move all the dogs to some not so terrific places. Sandy organized the volunteers to come out to Petco where we had every breed except pit bulls this past Saturday. Many of the 40 + dogs that we have rescued from this facility have been placed in breed rescues, in foster homes and a few in forever homes. We still have lots of dogs that need foster and forever homes including one special old shepherd who is about 12 years old. I want to thank the Amanda Foundation, Best Friends and the Heigl Foundation for helping Downtown Dog Rescue taking some of these dogs out of an over crowded situation. There still is a lot more work to do. The dogs that we did get out are all so grateful to be on the road to their forever homes! What a great team we had on Saturday, evaluating, transporting, bathing, and showing the dogs at Petco. A special thank you to everyone who showed up to foster a dog so that no dog had to go back to the kennel.

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Agility Dog! SASHA

I’ve been taking my shelter dog, Dante, to agility class for the past year. For those of you that don’t know, agility is a sport where the dog and owner have to maneuver a series of obstacles as a team. The obstacles can include jumps, ramps, weave poles, and tunnels. It’s been a great way for Dante and I to have fun and strengthen our relationship. It’s even helped him get over some growly dog issues he’s had.

As I was driving home from class tonight I couldn’t get Sasha, a DDR dog, out of my mind. Sasha would be the PERFECT agility dog! She’s athletic, focused, motivated, and is a wonderfully balanced dog. (This is one of Lori’s “go to” dog testers when introducing new dogs to the pack.) Sasha’s been with Lori for about two years now. Before that she was with another rescue, and before that, the East Valley shelter. That’s a lot of bouncing around for a young dog! And that seems to be the only “problem” with her…she has a lot of energy and bounces around. Sasha would thrive in a sport like agility! High-energy dogs need a place to channel their energy and agility is a great combination of physical and mental stimulation.

Ok, so maybe you’re thinking, “but I don’t want to do agility, so maybe Sasha isn’t the right dog for me.” Not so fast. While Sasha’s athleticism and brains make her a great candidate for agility or other dog sports, Sasha would be perfectly happy going to the dog park, hiking, running, or going on long walks. She is a great dog that is ready for a forever home. And you never know, she just might inspire you to give agility a try.

LORI’S CORNER: Marc De Luna Dogs

Roja

Danity

Back in December, 67 dogs were seized by Animal Control in a small warehouse in South Gate. The owner of this “kennel” was Marc De Luna. It was on the news, detailing the horrible conditions that he kept the dogs in. Most of the dogs were crated 24/7, never allowed outside of the warehouse and definitely never allowed to play in a pack like our dogs. The details are horrific, I still have the photo of the first dog that I saw “Petey” in my mind. No hair, covered in mange, skin and bones, so sad. We decided to help and take two of the dogs that survived.

First came Roja a WONDERFUL, mellow, sweetheart, who loves all people and other dogs, even kitties. On Saturday, we took Danity into our rescue. What a different girl! Danity is high energy, loves to play and is already out in our pack with all the dogs, playing, running up the ladders, following all the dogs around, learning the rules of our kennel. When I see how happy these two dogs are now, it’s hard for me to imagine what hell they lived through for 6 months at that South Gate kennel, locked up, day after day in their crates, covered in mange.

Both dogs are now available for adoption. Roja could easily be an only dog or live with another quiet dog. She comes home with me every night and loves all of my older dogs. This is a great dog for someone who lives in a loft or apartment. She enjoys her walks at lunch time with Clancy at the park and rides in the car. Danity is the complete opposite. She would need another playful dog in the home. She is a “dog park dog”! There is no time table on these dogs, we will not rush to adopt them out but both dogs are truly ready for their forever homes and so deserving of a good life!

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: The Million Dollar Question: COOKIE!

As a volunteer with the city shelter, I’ve seen a lot of dogs come and go. I often wonder why some dogs get adopted very quickly and others will go for weeks or months without any interest. Of course there’s the obvious reasons: little dogs go quicker than big dogs, as do puppies; but when it comes to the pit bulls in the shelter I am often left scratching my head. A lot of times we’ll have VERY nice pit bulls that don’t get a second look but others that might get adopted or rescued despite the fact that the dog has some issues to work out. So this is the million dollar question…why do some dogs get adopted and others don’t? I know, I know…there’s not really an answer, especially one that wouldn’t involve a great amount of human psychology…but I can still wonder.

Thanks to Downtown Dog Rescue, Cookie will never have to face the “not being adopted” question, it’s just a matter of when. But this is what I ask myself every time I see her…”Why has she not been adopted yet?” Cookie is super sweet, has an incredibly cute and unique face, and is GREAT with all the other dogs in Lori’s pack. This is a dog that will play and be friendly to everyone but will move away at the first sign of trouble. What else could you ask for? If you’re considering adopting a dog, please consider Cookie!
