SEAACA Spotlight: Little Pibble ANGEL!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Angel is a very sweet, affectionate lab pit mix with just about anybody she meets. Angel is at the SEAACA shelter in Downey and needs to get out NOW. Angel is a former evidence dog that has been released and can be adopted immediately. She has been at the shelter for over two months now and time is running out for her. We need a foster home and donations to help rescue her. Please forward Angel’s info to anyone you know that can help out.

 Thanks. Stella

AFFECTIONATE YOUNG POINTER PIT MIX LOOKING FOR LOVING FAMILY

Hi my name is Angel! I am a young female pointer pit mix that is looking for a loving family. If you really take a closer look at me you will see that I am little of this and a little bit of that……a Heinz 57. I love getting belly rubs and giving tons of kisses to people. I am good with other dogs and just enjoy going on longs walks with people. I am hardly any trouble at all and I will smother you with love and affection if you let me. I am available for immediate adoption as I am already spayed, micro-chipped and vaccinated with all my shots. Please adopt me and I will love you forever!

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Black Dog Syndrome – Pearl

If you’ve never heard of Black Dog Syndrome (it’s a phenomenon that is well known to shelters and rescue organizations), it’s the idea that black dogs are much more difficult to find homes for than non-black dogs and they are often among the first dogs to be euthanized. If you think that this is a myth, just take a visit to your local shelter and test yourself to see which dogs you notice first. Chances are it’s the dogs that are lighter in color.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the two equally horrible intake photos of two dogs at South LA shelter. Which dog pops out at you first? The white one, right?

BENTLEY – ID#A1132925

ID#A1141500

Whether we mean to or not, black dogs get overlooked at the shelter. They are harder to see through kennel gates, they are harder to photograph, they tend to be “bigger” dogs – rottweilers, black lab/mixes, and of course pit bulls! There are also the stereotypes that black dogs are scary or evil and movies have a terrible history of portraying black dogs as mean and vicious. That’s a lot of stigma to have to overcome!

My point in all this is to say…next time you are thinking about adopting a dog, don’t forget about the black dogs. Of course personality should always come first, but if everything else is equal think about bringing the black dog home. Forget any stereotypes and instead, think about the positives…they don’t look as dirty as white dogs, black won’t clash with anything you own, and black is ALWAYS in style!

Pearl is one of the many black dogs that Downtown Dog Rescue has available for adoption. She is originally from South LA shelter (where I’m sure she had a horrible intake picture) and is now lucky enough to get to play with Lori’s whole pack. She is a submissive girl that gets along with all the dogs and even cats. Pearl is only 2 or 3 years old and would be a wonderful addition to any family.

Please contact lori@modernica.net to schedule a meeting to meet Pearl or any other of her wonderful black dogs!

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: Shelter sisters smile -mastiff/bulldog mixes A1138873 & A1138877

SEE THE SADDEST SHELTER SISTERS SMILE

SO WORRIED — SO SO WONDERFUL
(your heart will break while watching this video, Missey and Audi curled up together in the corner of their very dark kennel, awaiting an unknown fate)

WHAT FACES!!!!! WHAT MUSHY, HUGGABLE HONEYS!!!

IMPOSING AT FIRST — INCREDIBLE ALWAYS

Missey and Audi (A1138873 and A1138877, both 5 years old) have spent their entire life out of doors and have the callouses and a bit of stiffness to prove it. Yet, their hearts are not hardened. These girls seek solace in each other’s company — in the corner of their kennel, hiding from people’s eyes, from thoughts of making them into guard dogs. Their owner turned them in because of “cost” and indicated that they were friendly with people and other dogs. (We have not had a chance to get them out with other dogs yet but will do so. They did not react to others when they were impounded — a good sign.) They were certainly sweet-natured girls with everyone when we had them out and their antics were hilarious. Audi would take the treats while Missey would wag her tail. Gentle and loving, they need to get out of the shelter now or they will fall into deeper depression and illness — and face their death.
Please call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or (213) 485 -0119 to save them. And please let us know that you have opened your hearts to the saddest shelter sisters.
With thanks,

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: PEPPER

Pepper is a beautiful 3-legged dog that needs a super home! She is approximately 2-3 years old, is a Lab – Pit bull mix that weighs 55-60lbs. She is missing her front right leg as a result of a horrible dog attack at the facility where she was living before we rescued her. According to the kennel person, a dog grabbed her and almost killed her. She has endured so much suffering, was neglected, poorly cared for and basically left to heal on her own. Amazingly, she loves other dogs, is a submissive, sweet, gentle girl who only wants to give you kisses and snuggle against you. She gets around beautifully on three legs and loves to play. Although she would do best walking with a special support harness which our dog rescue will train the adopter how to use (it’s really easy), she can get around great on 3 legs.

Our vet gave her a good prognosis and the missing leg will not shorten her life span if she continues to stay fit and in good health. In person, she looks more like a Lab than a Pit bull Terrier, has very soft eyes and is waiting for her super special forever home. If you are ready to open your heart and home up to a dog who could live with both cats and dogs and small children.
Please call Sandy to make an appointment to meet Pepper at 818-407-4145 or e-mail me directly at Lori@modernica.net.

This dog is an A+ girl!

Pepper is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: Luscious Papaya – dobie / husky mix 1 blue eye A1132618 South L.A.

MUST BE OUT BY SAT August 7, 2010 in the a.m.

PREVIOUSLY PATHETIC PAPAYA

BECOMES PASSIONATE PAPAYA

WITH GENTLE COAXING

THE SMILE APPEARS, THE HEART MELTS

Papaya (A1132618, 4 year old, dobie / husky mix, on alert and needs out by Saturday morning, 8 a.m.!!!) is a luscious girl. Out of her kennel on our walk, I was surprised and impressed that everyone who saw her expressed their admiration at her beauty and grace. Papaya has been so worried at the shelter. She hid in the back of her kennel, refusing to eat, lost 6 pounds — and was moved to ISO where she has been dining on gourmet cuisine. We took her for a photo shoot and with just a little compassion, in a few minutes, this girl showed off her sweet smile, her charm. I was touched by her reaction to the two sets of puppies on either side of her ISO kennel — she wagged her tail at them, obviously thinking back to the puppies that she once had. Papaya is a shy girl who will reward your attentions with a wonderful wag of her tail and a gleam in her eye — especially the blue one. She now has URI and is in need of immediate rescue.
If you would consider saving this lovely girl, please call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119.
And kindly let us know that she is as delicious as we believe her to be.
With thanks,

PITStop Community Assist: RUSTY!

Hi Everyone,

Here is yet another casualty of the present economic condition… I was called today by a couple who recently lost their jobs and their home. The husband is presently looking for work, but they are now homeless and don’t want to dump their dog in the pound.
Rusty is a 6 mo. old shep/Golden Ret. mix who is great w/other dogs and kids. Should be good w/cats as well. He is neutered, vaccinated and I believe housebroken too. I have posted him on Petfinder & Adopt-a-pet, but they can’t hold onto him much longer! Please contact them if you have a foster or interested adopter.
