FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

FRIDAY IS HERE!!! And its time to give thanks!

We already thanked the Nishi Girl Scout Troop 12135 but we’re going to do something we havent dont before on our Friday thank you’s and thats posthumosly thank a PIT BULL, Who else? but DDR alum PIRATE ISHII!

We want to thank her for being a great ambassador for her breed! Without Pirate, Girl Scout Troop 12135 would not have the great experience that they continue to have with Pirate’s breed!

We have her fellow pitty doing the honors, Bruno, rescued from the South Los Angeles shelter due for euthanization, who got adopted this week!

Bruno got adopted by this week by DDR OG, Richard Tuttlemundo, so you KNOW Bruno’s going to lead a happy life…here’s an example of life beyond the kennels!

Ok Bruno, off the water, you have a job to do! Ready, set….go!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank Pirate Ishii and her mom Christine and her sisters, Ami and Miya for being wonderful examples of PitBull ambassadorship and guardianship!

(It’s always a two way street, strong, knowledgeable PitBull owners produce socialized, good PitBulls and Pirate is a great example of that!)

Below is a video of me playing with my DDR alum counterpart Precious (that also got adopted by another DDR OG, Debbie Fan!) — socialized Pit Bulls know how to play fair and good guardians know when to say enough of the rough housing!

Good job Bruno! Now water dog — go and play — your sister Alicia is calling!!!!!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : ROCKET!

This is the story of Rocket the Dog,
as told to his mother,
Patti Harris

Hello everyone, this is Rocket speaking (formerly Yoda) and I would like to say WOOF WOOF to all my friends at the Downtown Dog Rescue. Boy, while I was walking those streets of Compton, I never imagined that life could be so cushy. When the authorities finally caught up with me, I thought it is was all over! Then they took to this place where I had ‘nip and a tuck”. Ouch that hurt!

Then I was on my way to a new foster family in Pasadena. I was finally on the receiving end of treats. One day in the middle of January, a family came to visit to check me out! I wasn’t looking my best yet and my ears were way too big for my little body (Hence the name Yoda). This was a nice family and the mommy came with treats for me! I wasn’t sure if they had a name picked out, so I just knew what to do. I made a quick break and I ran fast down the street and made my new momma chase me. When we finally made it back to the house, I knew I had secured my new name – Rocket Dog.

I had a little difficulty settling in at first…I mean, who invented this thing called a “doggie door”? It kept hitting my tail until I figured out how to speed up! My first night was so sweet…I slept on the bed, in-between my new mommy and daddy. I knew right away that this was going to work out fine! I have this yard all to myself, except I cannot figure out what to do about this big thing of water in the middle. No matter how many times I bark at it, it doesn’t move.

About a month ago, my new doggie siblings arrived for a visit. Both rescue dogs, both Maltese. It has been fun when they are over because we are all the same size and have fun together. If you look at the picture of me lounging in the back yard, you will see a cute Maltese – her name is Gizmo. Isn’t she pretty?

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : Mr. Bojangles!

MR. BOJANGLES
by Raizy Goffman

This first picture is from 2008 when we first got him………quite a change!

I have a real Wheaten Terrier clip on him now, and one of the Mom’s at our horse show said she is a Wheaten Breeder and that he is definitely a full Wheaten. Who knows? We did a DNA test that said Cocker, Mini Pin, & Maltese. No way! I’ll accept the part cocker, but not the other breeds. They say if you laugh out loud every day you will live a long time. Well, Milt & I are going to live forever! We laugh at Bojangles every day! He is just too cute, too funny, too loving, too joyous, etc, etc, etc! He does everything at full speed with total joy. He is the official greeter at our horse shows, and his job is to greet EVERY person and dog that comes on the place! The sleeping picture is what he is like on Monday mornings after a weekend of horse shows at Camelot Riding Club. When he starts snoring, we laugh at that too.

Everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) loves him. I have tons of friends that would steal him in a heartbeat. He goes to the barn with me everyday and has a very full social life. He ignores the horses, knows to stay out of the arenas, and is very busy keeping an eye on me all day while greeting all the clients as they arrive to ride their horses. We are starting to obedience train him with the thought of maybe making him a therapy dog. He would be a great one (and it would keep Milt busy too).

Here is the link to our horse show schedule.
If you have the time, come up and see us and […]

Lori’s Corner: Coco Puff has found his home

On Saturday, Coco Puff, our older, mellow, white, big boy, American Pit bull Terrier was adopted after being in our rescue for three years, YAY!!! I’m sure that everyone who reading this post is wondering, well, who adopted Coco? Did he get a home with a nice family where he will have his own dog bed, toys and a forever home with kids and yard? Not exactly, and that’s definitely not any of the types of living situations that would have interested Coco if he could pick and give us his opinion. Sadly, in three years, this great dog never received one application despite being on three adoption sites, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, he was networked, yet no one wanted him. No one wanted him until Errol met Coco Puff. It was love at first site!

Errol is an experienced pit bull owner, who lived with a dog aggressive Male APBT named Petey for 12 years. He rescued Petey after an abusive owner let him go. The two were inseparable until Petey became ill and had to be humanely euthanized. I could see that it was tough for Errol to talk about Petey at our meeting. When I told him that Coco was not exactly cool with male dogs, it sure didn’t compare to the level of aggression he had endured with Petey. In fact, it seemed like Coco was going to be a walk in the park compared to his former dog, literally because that’s where they will be spending the majority of their time, the park. Errol lives outside and Coco is going to be his road dog. I wasn’t hesitant at all about the idea of Coco not having a traditional home, he was going with a great dog owner, with lots of hands on experience with the breed, and a track record of caring for a dog that surpassed most wealthy pit bull owners. I know a lot of stereotypical middle class dog owners who would not spend their life’s savings on their dog, something that Errol did with his last dog. Good dog owners come in a variety of socio-economic, education levels, as well as ethnicities.

Each month, Errol will be entitled to a small stipend to be used for whatever Coco might need. Downtown Dog Rescue will pay for any medical care that Coco might need for the rest of his life. None of this would have been possible without the introduction and support of Cynthia Larkin, a dog […]

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : MIA!

Mia at the Dog Bone park in Culver City, May 5, 2008

MIA

by Denise LaChance

I should back up a bit to explain how I first saw Mia’s photo on petfinder.com In 2004 I was able to have my own dog, for the first time since my first month in college when my dog was injured and ultimately killed by a car after a neighbor let her out of the yard because she was barking too much. In the years after that, I had traveled a lot for business and for pleasure. I had housemates who had dogs a couple of times, and that’s how I came to know English Cocker Spaniels, in one instance, and fluffy terrier mixes in another. A wonderful cat had found me,chasing me down the road while I was jogging, and shared life with me for 18 years. One cat led to another and then another. Then in 2004 I moved to an apartment that was 3 miles away from work. Finally, it was time for a dog.

I found an eight-year old black Cocker Spaniel at the Carson Animal Shelter on petfinder.com,adopted him and named him Ben. My cat Francis died at age 16, most likely because of the food poisoned by the ingredient from China. Word about that had not come out in the press yet and so we had no idea why Francis suddenly suffered kidney failure. After that loss I began thinking about Ben being an older dog and my cat Clara being an older cat. As I was looking for another apartment, one with a yard, it occurred to me that it might be time to get a second dog. The second dog, I thought, could keep Ben company, and also ease my way through the grief that was bound to come with having two elderly companion animals.

I was specifically looking at Cockapoo’s and terrier mixes. I had briefly met an Australian Terrier when I was considering Ben. I liked him and liked what I learned when I went home to think about the two of them and to do more research about terriers. I had learned that there are terriers who do not bark constantly, and the one I met had clearly demonstrated that. He was the only dog in the shelter other than Ben who seemed not to be barking. My decision between Ben and the terrier was simplified when a rescue group pulled the terrier before […]

LORI’S CORNER: Adoption Extravaganza at DDR!

his past weekend was a very busy weekend for adoptions. We decided to book people for private appointments to meet our dogs at our kennel in Downtown LA instead of sending a few dogs out to Petco. I always take people by appointments on Saturday and Sundays but it’s usually one or two a weekend that often results in zero adoptions. This was not the case this weekend.

We got off to a slow start, our first appointment was a “no show/no call”, but our next appointment with Suzie was an adoption. She met Pepper and instantly wanted to adopt her. She had lost her two older dogs and was ready to adopt after her loss. The great thing about showing dogs at our kennel is that adopters get to see the dogs out in a small pack. When Suzie met Pepper, she was able to see her with lots of other dogs, off leash, playing with toys, running around, being a puppy. Hard to believe that just two weeks ago Pepper was going to be euthanized due to overcrowded conditions at the South LA shelter.

Next, Quattro was adopted. I will deliver him to his new home this weekend. Quattro also was set to be euthanized at the South LA shelter the day that we rescued him. His new owner Gene had been looking to adopt a dog for a very long time. He loved Quattro’s energy and intelligence. This pup is a gem. Very quick to understand what I want him to do, very social, a great boy who is going to love the dog park near his new home in Valley Village.

Sunday, Askim was adopted to a couple who live in Santa Monica that have been looking for a dog for two years. They wanted to adopt a dog but the time was never right. Now that they own a home and are more settled, it was time to get a dog and they picked Askim, our Compton Park dog. He went from being a stray at our spay/neuter clinic in the park in Compton to living in a beautiful home in Santa Monica, going to the dog park every day. What a great life […]
