SOUTH LA DOG SPOTLIGHT: PRONOUNCED DEAD SAT. SCHEDULED TO DIE YESTERDAY. WANTS TO LIVE TODAY. 10-year-old super sweet GS A1168948 South L.A.

PRONOUNCED DEAD ON SATURDAY

SCHEDULED TO DIE YESTERDAY. “WHO ME? NO!!!!!!!!”

WANTS TO LIVE AND BE LOVED EVERY DAY

Watch Chewy’s video and see this gentle but camera-shy girl :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0LvlHwQZWk

I was at the shelter the day that Chewy (what a name — A1168948, 10 years old) was walked in by her owners who said she was “a good dog” but that they were moving. I was in the kennels shortly afterward, Chewy standing in her cage alone, puzzled at the bars surrounding her. And I was there the day that a Community Service worker found her, upside down, legs in the air, eyes open — and pronounced her dead. Lucky for Chewy that this was a mistake!!!! Chewy just sleeps on her back with her legs in the air, propped up against the kennel walls — she prefers it that way. As an older dog with an older hematoma to her ear (and now an ear infection as well! — but on antibiotics, no surgery necessary) and no one clamoring to take her home, Chewy was scheduled to be euthanized yesterday. But, Chewy has no intention of dying.

She’s bouncy on her walks, she’s loving with people, and she even enjoys sharing a space with her new kennel mate. She’s a good-natured, huggable hunk of fluff — a sugary sweetheart who shouldn’t have to be pronounced dead in the shelter. She’s thankful that she is making it to Thanksgiving — but will be even more thankful if you will take her home and let her live happily ever after — and sleep upside down.

Please, please have compassion
for these older dogs.

Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119.
And kindly let us know that she is showing you that beautiful smile.
With thanks,

LORI’S CORNER: ACRES OF LAND DONT ALWAYS MEAN HAPPINESS FOR DOGS

Over the years, I’ve heard this phrase so many times, “I wish that I had lots of acres of land so that I could rescue a bunch of dogs and let them run free!” Sounds nice, but the reality is that sometimes, people who acquire a lot of land have other people dump dogs on their property, what’s one more dog which leads to ten more dogs, which leads to over one hundred dogs on a property that are not being property cared for.

A group of rescues, including Downtown Dog Rescue, are working together to take over 70 dogs off a property in the desert where they are living in makeshift runs without much shelter. The nights are extremely cold and it will be snowing there soon. Our goal is to rescue the dogs that are social with people and other dogs and there are a lot of them who need forever homes.

A couple of weeks ago, we helped raise enough money to bring Angel Dogs Foundation in to do 28 spay/neuter surgeries. The good news was that most of the dogs were already spayed/neutered but not every dog was done. There are still some feral dogs that are free roaming that need to be done before more litters of puppies are born. The day the mobile clinic went out, three new litters had been born that week.

We need a lot of help to help these dogs. We need experienced foster homes, people to transport dogs back to the Los Angeles area, volunteers to go out to the kennel to spend time with the dogs and cleaning kennels. Most of the dogs get very little human interaction since there are just too many dogs on the property. Most of these dogs were someone’s pet at some point in their lives, they are miserable waiting for someone to rescue them.

IN THE KNOW: Networking Disabled Pets on the Web

From: Celine Higgins
disabledanimal@gmail.com

My name is Celine and I’m a third year student at UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine. I found that there needs to be a better system to connect disabled animals online because I had the hardest time looking for a precious wheelchair dog. Therefore, I am in the process of making www.disabledanimal.com

This is a classification system to where people can list their animals for free and it is completely dedicated to disabilities. If you do, please take the time to list your wonderful disabled animals on the automated site. I was so frustrated at petfinder because you can’t classify all of them as “special needs” and expect people to sort through 1,000 + hits. It’s bare bones right now but I’m going to do my best to make it well-established. You have full control over the listings just like in petfinder.

Please help me to spread the word! Of course, please crosspost with other venues so adoptable animals will find a home.

Thank You.

URGENT!!!!WEST LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: Romeo (A1118039) and Fiona (A1123702)

ROMEO NEEDS OUT BY TOMORROW  – THURSDAY!

Romeo (A1118039) and Fiona (A1123702) are two young dogs that need a home now! They have been at the West LA shelter for a long time, May 25 and June 13 respectively, and their time is up!! Both of them have been scheduled to be euthanized and need a last minute miracle by this Thursday, Oct 14th! Neither of them shows well at the shelter because they are active dogs and when they’ve been shown to potential adopters, they come across as too high energy because it’s usually the first time they’ve been out of their kennel in over a week or more! But once they get to let off some steam, both dogs settle down and are very nice. Fiona and Romeo both like to play fetch and are excellent candidates for some basic training to help channel their energy.

Romeo is about 14 months old and has basically grown up at the shelter. He’s a big pup! We’ve introduced him to a few dogs and he has been playful. He was not reactive to any dogs at the mobile adoption we took him to and was just very curious. He loves his tennis balls and enjoys hanging out in the kiddie pool! Romeo can get excited when he meets people but with training and consistency he learns quickly that jumping does not get him what he wants.

Fiona is about 15 months old and was found near some stables where she loved to run around with a couple of other dogs, including a feisty female terrier. She has a lot of energy at the shelter but when we took her to the mobile adoption she was fabulous. Very calm and engaging and good around all the people and dogs.

Please come meet them at the West Los Angeles Shelter 11361 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064 Tu-Sat 8-5, Sun 11-5.
You may also contact me, Debbie Fan at blackjacksbark@gmail.com to find out more about them.

DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: SUNSHINE

Sunshine
Catahoula Leopard Dog/Pit Bull Terrier Mix

Medium • Adult • Female

Meet Sunshine a 2 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog mixed with a pit bull. If you have ever dreamedof owning a herding pit bull mix type dog, she is your girl. This is a WONDERFULLY social dog with people and other dogs. She is an off leash type dog who would learn very quickly to go on off leash hikes. She plays with at least 12 other dogs at a time in our pack and understands rank and order in a dog pack very quickly. She is more intelligent than most of our knucklehead pit bulls and learned the rules quickly. She is approximately 50 lbs, spayed current on all vaccinations and microchipped. She was rescued by DDR from the South LA shelter. She was the shelter pick, all the volunteers loved her and did not want to see her euthanized. She went out to many mobile adoption events, including the Best Friends Super Adoption but was not adopted. In fact, she made such a positive impression on everyone that Karma Rescue who had already taken 8 dogs, offered to board her for two weeks at their vet’s office if DDR would take her. We gladly accepted and a ray of Sunshine entered our kennel the day she came to live with us. She plays well with Bruno, Medira and Sasha to name a few of the many DDR dogs that line up to play with this sweet girl. Please call Sandy at 818-407-4145 or e-mail me at Lori@modernica.net.

LORI’s CORNER : Could you adopt an under socialized dog?

Over the years, we have rescued dogs that are great with other dogs but terrified of people. I’m not writing about human aggressive dogs or even fear biters, these are just dogs that would rather hide under a table if you look directly at them. In general, if the dog is over 16 weeks, it’s almost impossible to ever really change the super shy dog. This type of dog will always have issues being comfortable in new social situations. Now this is not to say that a dog that has not had a lot of human contact early in her life, if still young enough, can’t be adopted. It’s a process that takes time, patience and a lot of routine. I’m working with one now named Bernadette.

On Saturday, I took Bernadette back into our kennel. Like her brothers Dino and Curtis, they were probably all kept in a backyard in Compton without any human interaction until they were several months old. Fearful, skittish, whatever you want to call this, it’s a dog that hesitates and tries to hide when meeting new people or experiencing a new situation. For a rescue, showing a dog like this is extremely difficult at an adoption event and like my boy Curtis, the dog spends most of the time under the volunteer’s chair or hiding in a crate under a blanket. These are the dogs that, we, the volunteers, usually keep as our own personal dogs.

Bernadette had a great long term foster home, where she played with other dogs, for almost two years, until things changed and now she is back with us at age 3 ½ years. It’s difficult enough to be a black pit bull but forget getting adopted if the dog is a black pit bull who is terrified of people, keeps her tail between her legs and won’t make eye contact. She wouldn’t go in the crate, she went wild on the end of my leash when we were re-introduced to each other Saturday afternoon.

Then the change began to happen. We developed a simple routine of watching each other, moving from one run to eat, another run to relax during the day and a third run to sleep in, that was much smaller and had a nice safe feel to it. I am hand feeding Bernadette chicken and treats and allow her to just watch me and listen to me talk and interact with the other dogs. She has already calmed down considerable and understands the “OGs” at our kennel. Simon barks a lot but it means nothing, especially when he standing on the roof of his dog house, trying to get something going with Bertha who also has a lot of nothing to say. Sunshine likes to bark, “let me […]

NOTE FROM LORI WEISE – Downtown Dog Rescue:

Please cross post this older female English Bull dog -Staff TerrierX. She was one of 21 dogs that came into to LA Animal Services as Evidence Dogs. When she was taken by the animal cruelty task force, she was badly injured, her body covered in bite wounds, presumably from being attacked by the other dogs. The owner signed her and the rest of the dogs in this pending case over to the Dept of Animal Services. Now they are all up for adoption. The other 20 dogs are being held at North East shelter. I met this dog on several occasions (before the owner was arrested) and she is social with people and other dogs.

Here is a link to the CBS report about the arrest:
