MIA’S DOG TREATS: LEARNING ABOUT THE BREED

It was interesting to say the least to learn more about the pit bull terrier. I read many books and magazines and certainly learned a lot about behavior and temperament. When it comes to the breed name, the information is a bit confusing….

MIA’S DOG TREATS: Pack Hike in Santa Monica Mountains!

I got to know Gabriel through a friend, and he told me about the pack hikes he does twice a week working as a dog walker. After chatting for a while, I asked him to bring Sass along on the hikes, since Sass had developed a fear of big dogs from being attacked.

Sass loves hiking and is great off leash. I thought it would be a really good way for him to join and be around several large dogs.

It’s great that Gabriel sticks all 12 dogs in his SUV!! It sure helped Sass with his big dog fear!

A few weeks later, Gabriel inquired about bringing Princess too. I was a little concerned about her prey drive; because of it, I have never had her off leash so far. On the other hand, I felt strongly like she would stay with the pack. He took her a couple of times on leash and, once he felt she was ready, he took her off leash, and I joined in for this wonderful experience!

What an amazing morning! Princess stayed right by my side the entire hike, and I could not have been more proud!

MY FIRST FOSTER PUPS – PUP TWO

I started helping DDR with fostering puppies last summer.
Each Puppy has brought me a different learning experience and so much love and joy!

CRAZY STACEY
The second puppy, a little street pup that had been locked up in a van to keep her safe, was very skinny when she came to me.Stacey had a LOT of energy and played with my dogs for hours every day until she dropped! She had developed separation anxiety, maybe from being locked up, and I quickly learned that she was an escape artist! The first morning, I was going to take Princess for a walk by herself. I went out the walkway towards the gate, turned around, and there was little Stacey right next to me. She had climbed the 5ft fence to my yard in seconds! At work, she would get out of her play pen by climbing over it. I made a roof out of cardboard and thought I was smart…….until she figured out how to lift the pen and get out underneath instead! She would figure out anything I came up with, but how can you get frustrated looking in to her big eyes who said; “I just want to come with you”.She earned the nick name “Crazy Stacey”.

Little by little, she calmed down and learned to be by herself for short periods of time. When Lori told me there was a man who wanted to adopt her after spending a month with me, I got a little nervous. I scrolled down the application and read, “I WORK AT HOME”. A match made in heaven!!

Scott came to meet Stacey and decided to adopt her. She is gradually learning to be home alone and I am so happy that this little girl found the perfect person. Her name is “Penny” now, and this photo was taken the morning I delivered her to her new dad!

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part II

TRAVIS
I picked up Travis from the animal hospital about a month ago to come and stay with us to heal up and get healthy. This little pup had a rough start in life and had been attacked multiple times by other dogs.

Hi – I am Travis, the cutest puppy ever! I know that for a fact because people stop me on the street all the time to tell me how beautiful I am. I’M HOT!!
I’m learning super quick. I figured out the doggy door myself with the cone and everything. I love people, they are so much fun! I like to play in the sun with Sass & Princess, but if it’s cold and rainy, I rather stay inside and cuddle. I am officially house broken now and can hold it all night! I am extremely comfy in a crate since I had to spend a lot of quality time in there to heal up. I’m growing really fast because I LOVE FOOD!

I will soon join Lori’s pack downtown to play with all the dogs and go out on adoption events.

MIA’S DOG TREATS: MY FOSTER PUPS – Part I

I started helping DDR with fostering puppies last summer. Each Puppy has brought me a different learning experience and so much love and joy!

KOO-KOO CHANEL

Before the first one, “Ethel,” arrived, I went to purchase a crate for a 5-6 month old pup. Since I never crated a dog before it was a confusing experience to pick one out. I think it’s safe to say that the puppies did much better in crate training than I did, I’m still in crate training, four puppies later!

Billy drove Ethel over to my house, and when she jumped out of the car, it was obvious that her age had been a little miscalculated… She was bigger than my dogs…. probably more like 8-10 months old, so the crate I had purchased was too small. Back to the store in a hurry, to get a bigger one!
This girl came from South LA Shelter and was red listed, due to mange. Lori had her pulled and sent to the hospital for treatment, and then she came straight to my house. Her coat was dull and had spots of hair loss. Ethel quickly settled in with my dogs, and they had the best time playing. After a few days, she started itching again, and I had to take her to the hospital for another Mitaben bath. When I picked her up in the evening, she was exhausted and did not want to play or eat. I got so worried about her that I slept on the couch with her next to me on the floor. I woke up many times to wipe her runny nose. She was back to normal the next day, which was a huge relief!

Ethel’s chocolate brown coat quickly got shiny and beautiful. She became a stunning looking dog! I used to call her “Koo-Koo Chanel”: “Koo-Koo,” because of her sometimes crazy puppy behavior, and “Chanel” since she was so stylish!
On a trip to the Sequoias, I ran into two ladies who admired her and when they heard her story, wanted to adopt her. A few days later back in LA, I delivered Ethel to her new forever home in Manhattan Beach. Yes… I cried on my way back home. Since she was my first foster, it was hard to separate.

But in the evening, my sadness went to happiness when I received an email from her new family with this wonderful photo of her with her NEW name “Zoey”, and her NEW brother, together on her NEW bed 🙂

From red listed at the shelter to a NEW life!

MIA’S DOG TREATS: FIGHT & FLIGHT

My dogs are both very sweet and very playful, with a lot of energy. The similarities end there…Someone already mentioned on this blog that you don’t get the dog you want; you get the dog you need, and that is true! Sass turned out to be the opposite from the type of dogs I grew up with: he was very timid as a pup and took time to warm up. He also did not show much affection, so I was convinced after a while that he did not like me much. I was thinking that he would be a great therapy dog as he got older, because he looks like a stuffed animal, and kids love him. Once he turned a year old, his energy level increased dramatically, and it became obvious that therapy work was not his forte. I can picture the IV’s flying….. Agility is his favorite thing! If he gets scared of something, he runs in the opposite direction. Hence the term “flight”.

As crazy as he can be, he is also the opposite. I have travelled with him and left him alone in the hotel room, and he just sleeps calmly in his bed. He can be tied outside a cafe or store and shows no signs of anxiety. I have learned a lot from him, and I now understand his small gestures and how he does show affection. Every morning he comes outside to sit next to me when I drink my coffee. He leans toward my leg and we sit there together for a while. That’s his way of saying “I like you”.It has become clear that he is much more poodle than labrador, which is very funny to me, since I expected the opposite. I’m as far away as you can get from being a poodle person, and I don’t have ANY previous experience with that breed.

Then came Princess. She, on the other hand, looks a lot more confident, but that is not the case. She gets nervous and anxious if exposed to situations she is not used to. She shows TONS of affection, and her favorite moment is when I lie down next to her on her dog bed for some cuddle time!

The second week of having her, we took a trip to the dog beach. That was a nightmare and the very first time I saw her behave like a lunatic. Sass loves the water and was happily running around off leash. Princess, on leash, was attacking the water. I was flying after her, trying to calm her down, and was completely confused about this outburst of hers. […]

MIA’S DOG TREATS:LEASH WALKING A STREET DOG

I’m sure that everyone who has adopted a street dog has faced the challenge of leash walking.

“Walking” is not exactly the right word to use; it’s more like LET’S ROAM THE STREETS!!
Princess is little and only 46 pounds. But she is one strong lady, and with her high energy level AND her prey drive, on a scale from 1-10, she would score 11, or maybe even 12!
Sass was very excited having company on walks, so it was quite a daily adventure and a workout for me, to say the least!
When I say that I purchased every collar on the market for Princess, I mean it. I got the prong collar that did not work well, because she would continue to pull and tear up her throat. Not good.

Same with chokers – she would pull and choke herself without any result in a positive direction. The “no pull harness” was a joke- she did not even feel it! I added the backpack after watching Cesar Millan on the Dog Whisperer (yes, I Netflixed EVERY season of the show). Actually, I even purchased the “Illusion” collar from Cesar’s website. I have quite a collection these days, thanks to Princess!
The backpack was supposed to drain her energy more quickly, but I think it just made her stronger instead. She definitely became more focused, carrying the pack, but it was more like she was training for the Olympics with extreme determination. The “Gentle Leader” was the winner with her—it wasn’t perfect, but it worked better than anything else.

At one point, a friend of mine offered to show me how to work with her on hikes. Out in nature, her prey drive kicks in, of course, so that is a whole different challenge. Since my friend is a very fit & muscular guy who owns three very well behaved pit bulls, I was happy to take him up on the offer. I thought it would be a great learning experience for me, as well as for Princess.
I had Sass off-leash, and my friend had Princess on a leash. He rejected using the “Gentle Leader,” saying, “…she is so little; I’m used to the big strong guys.” He was quickly breathing more heavily than Princess […]

MIA’S DOG TREATS: Adopting Princess

When my labradoodle, Sass, was one year old, it become very obvious that he was the type of dog who needs the company of another canine. I started my search on Petfinder, looking for a dog a little bigger in size. I’m what people would call a “big dog” person, and Sass ended up a small/medium dog once he was done growing. Since he needed a best friend, I thought it would be great idea to go find a dog who was a little bigger, and that way, both of us would be happy!

I found a couple of dogs that I wanted to meet and got a call from DDR quickly after filling out an application. It turned out that the dog I was interested in was already adopted, but I was advised to come down and meet some of the other dogs in their kennel. So I stuck Sass in the car and headed downtown. The first sight of Maya was an instant realization that I had to rethink my big dog plan. She would have crushed Sass….I swear, there is no lab in Sass.

They sent me a poodle, and under all the fur is a skinny little guy with chicken legs!

Lori went to get another dog to show me; this one was also big, but very shy, and again, I said “No.” Lori sat down at a table (with her thinking cap on) and suddenly said, “I have this little dog that you might like.” My heart sank ….I still wanted a big dog.

I will never forget the first sight of Princess running towards me in the alley. She has something comical about her look, with her wide chest and big smile. Sass played with her for almost an hour, and they had the best time. I told Lori I wanted to think about it and went home, stubborn…still thinking about a big dog…

Later that day, I got a call from another rescue group about a young, black German Shepherd I had requested about. I looked over at Sass and paused for a second before I said, “Thank you for calling back, but we met a great match this morning.” At that moment, it became very obvious to me that the most important thing was to adopt a dog that would be the perfect match for Sass, and I also knew that very same dog would be the perfect dog for me.

Welcome little Princess!
