ACTIVATE: WHEN RESCUE DREAMS COME TRUE: The wonderful rescue of LUCILLE!

by Irene Soriano Brightman

When Lori sent me the appeal about Lucille, it broke my heart. When I saw the picture of Lucille, my heart sank even lower. Lucille was at the shelter and she easily could be overlooked by potential adopters online just based on her picture not looking the greatest. She was a senior and she had wounds on her body. When word spread that Chela was actively networking her, I’m sure there was a collective sigh of relief among those of us who knew the reality of what happens to older and non-pretty dogs like Lucille at the shelter…below is part of an email sent by Lucille’s official rescuer, Chela the day she sprung Lucille out of permanent lock-up. Hooray CHELA! Hooray Lucille…look at those wonderful eyes…

Description written by Lori of Downtown Dog Rescue for Lucille’s appeal :
She was one of 21 dogs that came into to LA Animal Services as Evidence Dogs. When she was taken by the animal cruelty task force, she was badly injured, her body covered in bite wounds, presumably from being attacked by the other dogs. The owner signed her and the rest of the dogs in this pending case over to the Dept of Animal Services. Now they are all up for adoption. The other 20 dogs are being held at North East shelter.

I just got home a few minutes ago with Lucille. She is a little chubby girl with no teeth. I stopped by Griffith Park on the way home to let her smell the grass and take a walk—I imagine it is the first time in a very long time, if ever, that she has done this. She has a lot of energy and I think some long walks with my boyfriend will trim some of the girth off her. She loves to walk and has a little tank like body.

She was very happy to hop into my car and after she stopped being so excited about being out of the shelter and a cage, she finally looked at me and gave me a little kiss. She has the most beautiful hazel eyes. We will take it slow as to how she is with other dogs and when she is ready I will start to walk her with my “easy” senior dog Claire. […]

PITStop Community Assist: PITBULL needs a new foster home, MUDDY!

Please help this very sweet boy – look at that face! – he is in desperate need of a foster!

MUDDY (after Muddy Waters) is a special boy. He has seen so much in his short 9 months, and he has remained sweet as pie though it all. He is mild mannered, a little shy, mellow and calm. He is fantastic with kids and people, loves to give kisses, and adores other dogs. Now it is time for Muddy to get a little love himself…a woman who has devoted her life to freeing chained dogs found Muddy chained in a yard- that is where he had spent his young tethered life. This kind soul has never lived inside a house before – and he needs a calm, happy home so he can get used to being part of a family. He is neutered, up to date on shots, and just a very tender spirit. PLEASE, PLEASE if you or someone you know can find it in their heart to foster Muddy, he would be so grateful. Thank you for networking Muddy.

RAINY’S PUPS update from Best Friends PUPPY CENTER

RAINY’S PUPPIES ARE GROWING! Follow their journey!

Puppy Adventures!

March 31, 2010, 4:20PM MT
By David Dickson
An extremely cute litter of puppies delights
caregivers and everyone else!

Dynamite, as the saying goes, comes in small packages. So what happens if you have nine such small packages bouncing around a single room? Well … you’d better be wearing your hard hat! Or, at the very least, some really thick pants.

Nine impossibly cute puppies came to Best Friends not long ago from a rescuer in California. Best Friends’ puppy mom Analia Gutierrez sums it up best. “They’re crazy!” In other words, they’re the kind of dogs who will do a back flip for joy every time somebody stops in for a visit. Or anytime somebody pulls out a treat …or hands them a toy, or … okay, so just about anything will get their dials up to ten. (At least they’re easy to please.)

Even so, all that potent puppy energy can be hard on the wardrobe. Analia will go in to work or play with the puppies and, afterward, come out with holes in her clothes. Nothing like death by kisses, right? They are so affectionate you can’t help but fall in love on sight, even if you do have to replace your jeans now and again. And their names couldn’t be more fitting. Known collectively as “the adventure pups,” the lineup is as follows: Quest, Trek, Cruise, Voyager, Odyssey, Trip, Journey, Adventure, and Safari. Rest assured this group won’t be spending too many lazy afternoons watching television reruns. They want to see the world! And see it they will.

All nine puppies will soon be ready to join the puppy socialization class at the new puppy care center. For those unfamiliar with the puppy class, it has nothing to do with learning tricks and everything to do with playing and having a great time together. When it comes to a school where having fun is the name of the game, there will be nothing short of […]
