HAMSTER

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier/American Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Color: Tan/Yellow/Fawn
Age: Young
Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
Sex: Male

I am already neutered, housetrained, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and good with cats.

Hamster’s Story…
Hamster was rescued from the West LA shelter where he was originally adopted as a very young 8 week old puppy but returned a couple of months ago at one year old because he was too much dog for the family. He lived with small children, other dogs, even cats and did very well. Like most pit bull mixes, he is energetic and needs to be walked and exercised. He loves other dogs and could go to a dog park everyday, he would love it. He is still growing, weighing about 60lbs now, he knows basic obedience, is house trained, has been neutered, microchipped and is current on his vaccinations.
Please call Sandy at 818-407-4145 or e-mail Lori@modernica.net to set up an appt to meet Hamster.

DDR YOUTH MATTER: DDR Adoption Show Team Members: Katie & Carly Carrasco

The second installment of the DDR Youth Matter section of PITStop bring us two awesome sister siblings Carly: age 17, Senior (12th Grade) at San Dimas High School Katie: age 14, Freshman (9th Grade) at San Dimas High School!

They are part of our dedicated volunteer PETCO Show Team that come every Saturday to highlight our dogs to interested visitors! Having them there brings a youthful vibe that’s just plain fun for everyone involved! They are intelligent young women with definite opinions and viewpoints! Bravo!

We hope that they will continue to come back even when their school project is over!!!!! Thank you ladies for all your great work!

Carly & Katie

1)How did you hear about Downtown Dog Rescue?

Carly:I heard about Downtown Dog Rescue from our Dad, who first heard about this dog rescue from his parent’s neighbor, Celeste, a friend of Sandy’s (and her husband).

Katie: I heard about it from my sister Carly, who heard it from our Dad, who heard it from Celeste (a friend of Sandy and her husband).

2)What is this project you’re involved with and what is the purpose of the project? How long is the project supposed to run?

Carly:The project I am involved in is the San Dimas High School Senior Connection Project or SCP for short. The purpose of this project is unknown to me. I enjoy volunteering, but presenting it in front of a panel of teacher judges, and writing a research paper is a complete waist of my time. I started this project my Junior year of high school and it goes until May 26, 2010 (the day I present my project to the teachers).

Katie:The project I am involved in is the San Dimas High School Connection Project. There is not a specific purpose to this project. The project is going to run through my four years of high school.

3)What were your perceptions of pitbulls before volunteering […]

TRAVIS (I’m Deb’s Dog of the Week!)

Here we go!

AMANDA

Amanda is 4-5 year old and is about 35 lbs. She is spayed and current on all vaccinations. She is a very petite and friendly pit bull terrier. She has had a very hard life. Her original owner, a taxi driver, lost his home, and he had no choice but to keep her in his taxi and drive her around with the passengers he picked up. This worked until someone complained to the cab company. He found a neighbor in Compton with a yard who already had 15 dogs on her property. This was ok for a few weeks until Animal Control mandated that she get rid of 12 dogs, Amanda being one of the dogs. Off she went to a poorly run kennel where she was warehoused in a tiny crate with hardly any food and dirty water. She was attacked by other dogs at this facility and as a result, suffered bite wounds to her face and muzzle. She is definitely not a fighter but had to fight for food and water at this kennel. But don’t worry, Amanda is sweet sweet sweet and she did not let this bad place change the lovely personality that she has. Animal Control began investigate the kennel and they were mandated to reduce their numbers; this is where Downtown Dog Rescue came in. Amanda was rescued because she had no chance of a good life if we didn’t take her. Emaciated, full of fleas, a bad eye that is still being treated, she is so grateful to have food, water, a blanket and a dog house every night to sleep in. Slowly, we are teaching her to walk on a leash and allowing her to enjoy her time with our dog pack. Please consider adopting or even fostering to adopt sweet Amanda who has been to hell and back.

Amanda is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

The previous week was full of activity for DDR! Helping out the 61st Street Kennel dogs was on everyone’s mind. This venture had a happy ending – dogs were transported, bathed, shown, fostered and adopted! We couldnt do it all without the help of many, many people!

So, our newly adopted pup CHOCOLATE!!!!!! will do the honors this week!

Chocolate would like to extend a special thanks to Linda Hodges for the two wonderful PET BEDS she donated to DDR!

Special message from Lori Weise

Thank You to the Amanda Foundation, Retriever Rescue, Best Friends Animal Society, Heigl Foundation and Janet Cook from Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue and all of the foster people and adopters who came out last week to help us rescue 41 dogs out of the 61st Street kennel in a little over two weeks.

A monumental challenge for a small organization like Downtown Dog Rescue but we did it, with a lot of support from our volunteers and friends who came out to support us, transport, bathe, and take lots of dogs out to adoption.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Cornelius, “Dog Man” Austin who helped me assess over 30 dogs last Saturday at the 61st Street kennel.

SATURDAY ADOPTION CREW!

Thanks to Cheryl Seaberg Elliott for bringing donuts!

A special thanks to the transport/bathing crew:
Robin, Billy, Debbie, Giovanni, Christina, Linda & Cheryl

A special thanks to our Volunteer SHOW Team at PETCO:
Sandy Dragotis: Volunteer and Adoption Coordinator
Show Team: Lezle, Leyla, Teresa, Effie, Linda, Christina, Jill, Jill’s Friend, Cindy, Rachel! (Jill – please send us her name!!!)
Photographer: Kathryn Hall and baby Hall!

LORI’S CORNER: Super Adoption was a Super Saturday!

On Saturday, we brought out a lot of dogs that we had rescued from a kennel that was closing. The owner of the kennel had asked for help in placing close to 100 dogs before they had to move all the dogs to some not so terrific places. Sandy organized the volunteers to come out to Petco where we had every breed except pit bulls this past Saturday. Many of the 40 + dogs that we have rescued from this facility have been placed in breed rescues, in foster homes and a few in forever homes. We still have lots of dogs that need foster and forever homes including one special old shepherd who is about 12 years old. I want to thank the Amanda Foundation, Best Friends and the Heigl Foundation for helping Downtown Dog Rescue taking some of these dogs out of an over crowded situation. There still is a lot more work to do. The dogs that we did get out are all so grateful to be on the road to their forever homes! What a great team we had on Saturday, evaluating, transporting, bathing, and showing the dogs at Petco. A special thank you to everyone who showed up to foster a dog so that no dog had to go back to the kennel.

Beautiful Cassie who still needs a home

“Trouble” never game me one minute of trouble!
He is now in his forever home in Santa Monica.

Happy puppy and new family!
