DDR Cares about CATS TOO!: The Scratch Lounge
I thought you would enjoy this photo of SEVEN cats sleeping together in a Scratch Lounge.
Mamma Chiara (on the right) is a foster cat rescued from a high-kill shelter by Milo Foundation of San Rafael, CA. She was close to being euthanized, and also extremely pregnant when Milo Foundation rescued her. Our family agreed to foster Chiara for Milo Foundation and on Easter Sunday we were all very excited when she gave birth to SIX little kittens. Here you can see the whole family reclining in a Scratch Lounge. This has become the kittens favorite place to rest, sleep and…nurse! Mamma Chiara manages to fit into the Scratch Lounge too…We thought you would enjoy this photo of seven cats in a Scratch Lounge.
The kittens will go off to their forever homes in about a week…we will miss their fun and antics but know they are moving on to happy lives.
We thought you would enjoy seeing how much they love the Scratch Lounge!
If you use this photo on your web-site, it would be great if you could mention the Milo Foundation.
Thanks,
Katie

Life wasn’t always a cakewalk for Young Daisy N. McKitty, the owl faced Calico revered by Kitties the world over for her invention, the Original Scratch Lounge. She came up the hard way, fending for herself in the hardscrabble “Bungalow Heaven” neighborhood of Pasadena where the back alleys are ruled by well fed crews of Norwegian Forrest Cats. Hers is a story of a young kitty who knew that with hard work and perseverence she could one day achieve the American dream. It all started with an epiphany that Daisy had while laying on a flat cardboard scratcher in her newly adopted Hollywood home. As she lay there she started pawing against the wall. Soon a prototype three sided scratcher was built, and then another, and then another. Over the course of the ensuing winter months, Daisy burnt the midnight oil, working impossibly long days testing and refining this new kind of scratcher. An absolute perfectionist, Daisy vetted hundreds of prototypes until late one spring afternoon she simply got up from her test model and announced with a […]
LORI’S CORNER: First Annual Pet Fair in Compton
I know that some of the youth and especially some of the older homeless men, like our friend and volunteer David, know people who are actively fighting pit bulls. Therefore, the best way to prevent dog fighting is to get the youth active with their pit bulls doing things other than fighting them. I’m proud to say, I work with a group of young men who own pit bulls that are very against dog fighting and dog breeding. My star example is Edgar, who volunteered all day Saturday, helping us translate in Spanish. He is the proud owner of Queenie, a red nose pit bull.
There is another small group who are definitely against dog fighting but are still actively breeding pit bulls or are contemplating creating their own blood line. Cris and Lando are two would be pit bull breeders who brought their dogs to the park on Saturday and decided to spay their female. We didn’t even discuss neutering the male pit bull because I know that’s “off the table for discussion” and I respect that.
Month after month, as Downtown Dog Rescue volunteers continue to raise awareness about the importance of making one’s dog a part of the family, we are seeing word of mouth referrals book appointments to the clinic and dog owners changing their minds about breeding. It’s an ongoing process that is built on trust and being there every month for one of the most needy communities in Los Angeles County. Compton is often considered a “write off” area, where nothing can be done because no one cares. Downtown Dog Rescue cares about the Compton community and the dogs who live there. Our goal is to eliminate the cycle of suffering, where packs of dogs roam the street looking for food and it’s very common to see dead dogs lying […]
THANK YOU FRIDAYS – Memorial for PuppyMill Mama’s
To do the honors is one of our Mama Pit’s PRECIOUS still waiting for her forever home!
First a moment of silence for all the puppy mill Mama’s that never had the chance to leave the puppymill or end up euthanized at our shelters after being tossed as unprofitable by a backyard breeder.
Precious? Are we ready?
On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank Ms. Andrea Braver, premier volunteer for the South LA Shelter for always watching out for Mamma Pits like me. She has always been very sympathetic everytime a Mamma Pit who’s ready to give birth or just recently gave birth comes into the South LA Animal Care Center and we thank her for that. Many a time, the puppies get adopted out right away BUT us Mamma Pits are most of the time left behind. So Ms. Braver, thank you so much for sending pleas on our behalf, checking on us and making sure that we are comfortable and attended to.
We also want to recognize the work of Best Friends “Puppies Aren’t Products: Los Angeles.” It takes a whole team of wonderful people to run this program and spread the word about the awful puppymills and the stores that use them. Thank you to the awesome team doing the great work:

PITStop Community Assist: PITBULL needs a new home
A friend passed away recently and left behind his Pitbull Terrier. The dog is at least 7 years old. It was well cared for by his previous owner and it has been around families so it is accustomed to people. My friend loved this dog so I really would like to find a home for it. The dog is currently in a kennel in the Los Angeles area.
I have been trying to find a home, but so far I have been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, some of the family who are responsible for the dog are becoming impatient and are hinting that they would rather put the dog the sleep then continue looking for a home. I have convinced them to wait a little longer, but time is running out. I cannot take the dog because of the rules where I live and the family members of my deceased friend do not want to take on the dog either.
ghostface has had all his shots. The dog was walked within a neighborhood where other dogs were and as far as I know there were no incidents with other dogs. This dog was pampered to an extent as he lived within the house with the owner. However, he was occasionally taken to parks and areas to run and exercise.
I know the family will be making a final decision on the dog’s fate soon as they cannot continue to pay the kennel fees for much longer.

URGENT SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ON ALERT & IN DANGER : TAFFETA CAN’T DIE — SHE JUST GOT BACK FROM THE PROM AND IS READY FOR GRADUATION A

Videographer Jennifer Warner was there, fell in love with Taffeta, and captured her giddiness for us all to admire : TAFFETA’S VIDEO
EVERYONE ADORES THIS GIRL — SHE WAS PERFECT ALL DAY LONG.
You’ll envy Kristen, her handler, when you see all the kisses that Taffeta gave her. And look at her favorite position, a la on the back, enjoying tummy rubs.
Taffeta (A1111364, only a year old) is absolutely out of time now (been on alert since May 17th!!!!!). This is her last week (needs out by Friday, the 11th) in our over-crowded shelter. Don’t let this social butterfly die. She showers affection on those lucky enough to meet her. Taffeta is certainly very enthusiastic and she can get slightly mouthy — like the big puppy that she is — but never aggressive — and she does calm down quickly. She’s been fine with other dogs. Graduation is coming up — and those of us who have met her are waiting to see her walk on the stage and out the shelter door.
Please call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119 today to save this gem. And kindly let us know that she is safe.
There are currently donations for a qualified rescue — if you wish to add anything, please e-mail / call me.
Many thanks,
Andrea & Mindy

PITStop SUPPORTS COMMUNITY BUSINESS: SKATE CAFE’
The story is that skateboarding was probably born sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, when surfers in California wanted something to surf when the waves were flat. Now, reports reveal there’s more than 18.5 million recorded skateboarders in the world, but this radio broadcast will be about more than skateboarding.
Skate Cafe’ and the guys involved are about providing a refuge for those appreciating the art of skateboarding; a place for expressive artists to congregate; and a refuge for young creative minds to communicate and celebrate their diversity. Last, but not least, Skate Cafe’ is a site where two distinctly different communities — loft-dwelling, upscale, downtown residents and visitors conjoin with Skidrow eclectic and artistic minds, to shop, converse and have free coffee/tea (hence, the name Skate Café).
The founders of Skate Café are professional skater Cato Williams, skater David Nussman and Soulful Commandoe designer Nicholas Mayfield. Professional athlete, Crushow Herring (artist and Skidrow activist) is collaborating with the Café, bringing artist and community programs to the shop.
Find out more about the Skate Café in a featured article in the Los Angeles Downtown News (May 14, 2010)
DAMIEN’S RESCUE DIARY: #4 FIRST BIG OUTDOOR ADOPTION EVENT

Another great week for Damien! He continues to do well, playing with more and more dogs, males and females. In fact, he now barks when I enter the kennel, as if to say, “Hey, don’t forget about me. Let me out to play!” Last Sunday, Sandy and the volunteers took lots of dogs, including Damien, to a big outdoor adoption event in Irvine. Damien rode in the car very well with volunteers Jennifer and Pete, the same couple that rescued and adopted out Rambo.
According to the volunteers, Damien was wonderful, very social with all the people who came by to visit with our dogs and all the dogs in our booth and walking with perspective adopters. No applications, again for Damien but what a great day he had on Sunday. When Jennifer brought him back to the kennel, late Sunday evening, Damien crashed out, laying in his crate, on his back, so tired. He ate dinner than happily went into his run for the night.
I took some new photos of Damien, playing with some of his friends. It’s tough to get a photo of Damien because he always chasing someone. This is one HAPPY BOY who needs his forever home. If you can’t adopt Damien, please tell your friends about this wonderful dog who loves other dogs and children and would probably do just fine with a kitty in the home.
