DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: CHLOE!!!!

We’re excited to re-visit one of our favorite rescues with fellow rescuers
CHLOE IS WHO WE HAVE IN MIND AND WE LOOOOVE HER!!!!

Chloe is looking for a new home and we’re rooting for her to get one soon!!!!
Find out about Chloe:

Chloe was red-listed at the West LA Shelter and Down Town Dog Rescue stepped in and pulled her.

She was very timid when she was first rescued but now she has warmed up and is a very sweet dog that loves going for walks and playing with other dogs.

Chloe knows how to sit, go down, and walks well on a leash. She is very quiet, mellow and low energy and would do well in a home or apartment. She is the type of dog who will just hang out with you if that’s what you feel like doing or she will join you for a stroll on the beach or a hike in the hills.

Chloe is just an all around sweet dog.

LET’S FIND CHLOE A HOME!!!!!!!!

LORI’S CORNER: THE DUKE CHALLENGE: ARE YOU GAME?

Duke is on the left
Pit bull Needs a home! This is a common e-mail and phone call that we get, everyday from dog owners and nice people who rescue dogs independently. Sometimes, the dog was bought or adopted as a puppy and now the owner has fallen on hard times or the dog as an adult is giving the owner a “hard time” and can’t control the dog. Both are frequent calls to rescue pit bull dogs. Our answer is usually no. No, we can’t take your dog but we can help you either re-home your dog or help you connect with your dog so that you can keep him. When I got a call from Sonny, an independent rescuer of 40 years +, the situation was a little different.

She brought Duke down to our kennel last Saturday. What I noticed immediately was how calm and connected he was to Sonny. I talked to her about why she needed to place Duke and I quickly understood the dire circumstances. Duke had been rescued from a shelter where he was scheduled to be euthanized. Sonny rescue him almost two years ago. During that time, she lost her job, is in the process of losing her home, and her rescue funds as well as personal funds are gone. She has nowhere for Duke to live as of next month. She is trying to sell her home before it goes into foreclosure. This is a woman who has dedicated her life and spent most of her life savings on rescuing animals. She needs a surgery and won’t be able to put off her own medical needs off anymore. Sonny needs our help in placing Duke.

Duke is a good dog, very well trained but he is a 5 year old American Pit bull Terrier. Anyone who has rescued or adopted a pit bull understands, I don’t need to write anything else after that sentence. For those of you who might not understand what I mean here, a 5 year old rescued APBT has a very slim chance of ever being adopted if the dog has any issues and Duke does.

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: DEAD BY MONDAY : Magoo : Overwhelmingly cute undercover underbite A1102422 South L.A.

Dear little Magoo is patiently waiting for someone to save him and his underbite. I received word yesterday from the shelter that his time is up — and he will be put to sleep if not rescued / adopted. I’ve watched Magoo for nearly 7 weeks and each time I see him, I can’t help but smile. Looking up with those wide eyes, those funny little teeth, he’s as cute as he can be — only weighs 21 pounds. But, he’s lost in a shelter that gets in 10, 20, 30 dogs a day. Regardless of the fact that he stands up to greet everyone, wagging his tail with joy; regardless of his sweet soul, Magoo is still a number among many. Please, don’t let Magoo die. Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or -0119 to save him.

And kindly let me know so I won’t be tied in knots with worry — which I am now. Andrea

MAGOO KEEPS HIS UNDERBITE UNDERCOVER

IT’S HARD TO CATCH IT ON CAMERA

SOMETIMES HE’S TOO COMFY TO DISPLAY IT

AT OTHER TIMES HE’S TOO BUSY

WE CAUGHT IT PEEKING THROUGH A WEE
BIT HERE WHILE HE SAT IN MY LAP

BUT IN THE PUBLIC EYE HE KEEPS IT
WELL-DISGUISED BY THIS BIG SMILE

Magoo (A1102422, 2 years old, just 21 pounds, at the shelter since March 25th — way beyond the normal shelter welcome period) caught my eye the first time I saw him. That underbite was overly cute. When […]

PITStop Community Assist: ORION! DDR cares about cats too!

About a week ago, Long Beach Felines was contacted about a kitten with a deformed leg, but we did not have any room. About a week later, we again came into contact with the kitten who had finally gotten to a vet. The kitten (named Twister at the time) had an ankle out of joint and a fracture of his lower femur. His foster mom was about at her wit’s end so LB Felines decided it was in the kitten’s best interest for us to immediately made room from him. The kitten (now named Orion) has since undergone surgery to repair his femur at All Care in Fountain Valley at a cost of $2,500. His leg is currently in an external fixator which will be removed in a couple of weeks if all goes well. Long Beach Felines is a very small rescue with limited funding. Any help would be appreciated. We are a non-profit and a tax deduction receipt can be provided if requested.

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: PRECIOUS

LETTING GO OF THE PAST: Precious

Dog’s are amazing creatures! I’m sure anyone reading this can attest to that. Over one dog’s lifetime, they can go through so many things…abuse, neglect, abandonment, hunger, loss of loved ones, and so on and so on. If any one, not to mention several of these things happened to a human being, the natural tendency would be to carry the hardship with us throughout our lives until the choice is made to address it: let it go, get counseling or whatever the person’s process is. Dog’s on the other hand live in the moment! There may be some residual scaring that takes place, but in general dogs are pretty darn resilient. Dogs that have been abandoned at the shelter are able to “keep their chin up” and wait for their next home to come along. Okay, so I realize that humans are not dogs and that we have different brain capacities and ability to empathize and everything…but we as a society tend to humanize our dogs anyway, so why not focus on the good stuff!

Precious is a great example of a dog that was dealt a rotten hand but hasn’t held on to any of the baggage. She was living at a home in South Central Los Angeles where she was chained to a tree for most of her young life. She only weighed 23 pounds when DDR rescued her, she’d been infested with fleas that had bitten her raw, and she had two big sores on her hips that had been left untreated. She was given absolutely no attention! But Precious doesn’t care about any of that. She was brought back to health, socialized with dogs and is just a good dog. When you see her at adoptions she is very quiet and gentle-never pushy or demanding. She even gets to spend time at Lori’s house on weekends. I think we can all take a lesson from Precious and learn to let go of the past and look forward to the future!

If you would like to meet Precious. Please email lori@modernica.net

DAMIEN’S RESCUE DIARY: #1 My Life

HI ! My Name is Damien. I am approximately 3 years and would have became homeless if not rescued by a ‘homeboy’s mom’. My homeboy is Boxer.
I am looking at you through my yard on the last day my family moved away. . .they never said good bye to me . . .but I knew things were not right.
Boxer’s Mom came over after I had stayed at my house for a day after my family had left – they were unpacking at their new place – the apartment they live at doesn’t accept dogs. . .I am not a dog . . . I have feelings . . . I am a people person.

Boxer’s Mom is a nice lady she gave me food and I was really hungry too. I am really glad she came because I was getting scared about being tied up on the chain with those bad dogs that lived next door. They jumped the fence and attacked me twice

This is what happened to me – I lost my right eye because of the second attack. I guess I look pretty good after three weeks.

Homeboy Boxer’s Mom picked me up on May 6th. I was so relieved but then an awful thing happened – she got out the hose – NO ! NOT ! THE ! BATH !

But hey this wasn’t so bad, nice warm soapy water, Auh Yeah Babe. . .my hot spots stop itching . . . lady did you have to turn on that cold water to rinse me . . . I’ll hide behind these Bamboo sticks holding up her Spider Lilly – Shoot that did work . . .

O My ! What’s this ! fresh water and a full bowl of dog food AND A CLEAN BLANKIE ! I’m in heaven. . . .I’m gonna chow down and take a nap. . . .wow dude what happened – its now morning . . .gees do I gotta whiz . . .Hurry up Lady and Finish walking Boxer and Buddy (Boxer’s Brother) . . . O BOY ITS MY TURN ! sorry the garbage can is mine, and the wall, the neighbor’s steps and the corner of the bushes, the light pole, fire hydrant – all this even before the walk.

Who is this lady she knows everybody – Daisy, Shirley, Chico-the-man, Diamond, Curley, Star, Chuckie-is-Sexy, Gus, Taco, the Gator Babies. . . .this turned out to be a pretty good walk . . . and all the poles . . . o my . . .

This won’t be too bad. . .the second day I got too see everybody again – I […]

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : Mr. Bojangles!

MR. BOJANGLES
by Raizy Goffman

This first picture is from 2008 when we first got him………quite a change!

I have a real Wheaten Terrier clip on him now, and one of the Mom’s at our horse show said she is a Wheaten Breeder and that he is definitely a full Wheaten. Who knows? We did a DNA test that said Cocker, Mini Pin, & Maltese. No way! I’ll accept the part cocker, but not the other breeds. They say if you laugh out loud every day you will live a long time. Well, Milt & I are going to live forever! We laugh at Bojangles every day! He is just too cute, too funny, too loving, too joyous, etc, etc, etc! He does everything at full speed with total joy. He is the official greeter at our horse shows, and his job is to greet EVERY person and dog that comes on the place! The sleeping picture is what he is like on Monday mornings after a weekend of horse shows at Camelot Riding Club. When he starts snoring, we laugh at that too.

Everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) loves him. I have tons of friends that would steal him in a heartbeat. He goes to the barn with me everyday and has a very full social life. He ignores the horses, knows to stay out of the arenas, and is very busy keeping an eye on me all day while greeting all the clients as they arrive to ride their horses. We are starting to obedience train him with the thought of maybe making him a therapy dog. He would be a great one (and it would keep Milt busy too).

Here is the link to our horse show schedule.
If you have the time, come up and see us and […]
