Lori’s Corner: Monthly Compton Spay/Neuter Clinic Update

On Saturday, Downtown Dog Rescue hosted our monthly free spay/neuter clinic in Compton at East Rancho Dominguez Park. As always, there were more clients with dogs that needed service than available spots in the clinic. We start our day around 7:00 AM and finished up around 4:00. We provided free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchips for 30 dog. Ivania and Rosalie and I volunteer each month and have built up a nice following of repeat customers, with lots of word of mouth referrals from friends and family members who have used our service in the past.

Rosalie’s neighbor Troy walked his two Shepherd puppies and his Mama Pit bull over to the clinic. After speaking to him, he confirmed what we already knew, lots of people who live in Compton don’t necessarily want litters of puppies, they just don’t have the money or know where to get their dogs fixed. He also told me that some people don’t have transportation to a clinic, even if they knew where one was or if they could afford it. Mr. Lopez who came with his female dog “Blackie” walked to the clinic, two blocks, with his three small children. Blackie had a litter of puppies because they could not afford to get her fixed. The family decided to keep one puppy and will bring the puppy in June to be spayed. The dog that I was really happy to see finally spayed was a Chow-pit bull mix named “Negra”. She must have had 10 litters of puppies back to back to back! These are all reasons why we need mobile clinics in the parks. I just wish that we could offer more service to the community of Compton. There is such a great need, especially for pit bull owners. A monthly clinic is a good start!

Our goal in 2010 is to spay/neuter 700 Compton Dogs. To make this goal, we will do a double clinic next month. Our June clinic will be Saturday June 12 and Sunday June 13th. On the 12th, I’m planning a small pet fair where dog owners can come out to […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS: Giving Thanks

This week was a special adoption week for many of the volunteers of DDR and especially Lori and one great pitty with a dream. Indeed we want to give thanks in HUGE PROPORTIONS. Our beloved CocoPuff with his long standing dream got adopted!!!!

After living in the DDR kennels for three years, Coco Puff never even got one single inquiry, application or visit. It would seem that no one was interested in him until last week. An
“out of the box” adoption, Coco Puff has finally found someone that will care for him for the rest of his life. Coco Puff will now be an active road dog in San Pedro, traversing the streets with his pack leader. It would only seem right that Coco would do the Thank You honors this week-

Ready Coco? GO!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank first of all the person who adopted me…Errol. It’s nice to finally have someone love me and take me into their life. Thank you Errol! Lori and a lot of DDR volunteers and friends are cheering us on! You made my dream come true! A special thanks too to Cynthia Larkin for introducing you to Lori and DDR so you could find me!

Talking about new beginnings…DDR would like me to extend a HUGE thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan and the foundation named after them,The Cesar and Illusion Millan Foundation for their generous donation to assist with medical care, boarding and spay/neuter surgeries for the 61st Street Kennel dogs. Providing care and support for all the dogs rescued from the 61st Street kennels earlier this year posed a big financial and logistical challenge for a fairly small rescue like Downtown Dog Rescue and with the great news we got this week, namely the Foundation’s assistance, we can now continue to provide the needed care to give them and more dogs another chance for a good life. Thank you Sean Hawkins from the Foundation and of course thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan!

Wow! Thanks Coco…Coco!?! Coco’s asleep!

He’s been walking the streets of San Pedro with Errol, being introduced as the new road partner! He’s pooped! lol! Ok, go ahead and sleep Coco!!! Live a happy and long life — we will […]

DDR YOUTH MATTER: Pitbull Art by Laurel Elementary School Students

Here are some of the fabulous coloring projects that Elementary students from Laurel Elementary School in West Hollywood who attended their school’s Earth Day event did at the DDR Table! We were the “Adoption Table.”

DDR volunteer Brittany Fulgoni brought the wonderful coloring pages from Pitt Bull Rescue Central’s Poppy’s Place webpage for kids to the event. My particular favorite is the pink eyes pit bull with fun colors. I commented to the young boy who did it that he really had a knack for color and he smiled. I told him he might want to consider art school in the future and he said YA! Everyone wanted the brown marker but I told them that their pitbulls can be any color they wanted and so some of them did the traditional brown pitty and some did the multi-colored pitbull! Future artists and pit bull lovers of Los Angeles!
It was a wonderful day!

PITStop Community Assist: BELLA!

We want to help Nisha find resolution regarding BELLA, a 4 year old pit bull that she recently ended up caring for, here in Southern California. Nisha is BELLA’s3rd guardian. BELLA’s 2nd owner is signing up for the Navy and can no longer care for BELLA. The 1st owner had to move into another place that could not accommodate a dog. Nisha does not want to drop her off to Los Angeles Animal Services because the holding time is 4 days max. She lives in the back house of BELLA’s 2nd owner.

She cannot take BELLA but she has been feeding her and allowing BELLA to sleep inside her house at night. She will try and hold out longer and find her a home. BELLA’s 2nd owner has completely washed his hands of her…sad. Nisha has noticed that BELLA has been rapidly losing weight. She is willing to drive BELLA to a vet appt but does not have the finances to currently subsidize a vet check-up.

Here is her plea:

My name is Nisha & I have been taking care of a 4 year old female Pittbull Mix that belongs to the neighbor in the front house where I live. She was given to him about 2 months ago and I have been feeding her and I can’t afford to feed her for the fact that I have 2 dogs of my own. She needs to be seen by a Vet ASAP, she’s been losing weight other than that she seems very active. She’s house trained and I let her in my house and never had any accidents. She’s a very sweet dog, she’s very good with my 16lb.& 4lb. dogs, but when she sees other dogs she is very vocal, I don’t know if it’s because she gets excited or if she will be aggressive, I can’t tell with her. Maybe she needs to go to a home without other dogs. I need help with her in finding a good loving home for her. If there is anyone out there that would like to adopt her please let me know. By the way her name is Bella. Thank you.

PITStop Community Assist: DAMIEN!

DAMIEN: The NEW one eyed wonder!

We’re trying to find Damien a foster home!!!!! Read his appeal — remember STRUMMER (now Ahab)? Damien is now our new Strummer – the one eyed wonder!!!! Here is something about Damien!

Jay and his lady due to a family dispute last year lost their Section 8 and are now moving.

Jr (a red nose mastiff built pit) and Congo (a grey and white mastiff built Pit)have jumped over Jay’s fence twice and attacked Damien. The first time it was just facial. The second time, Damien lost his retina.

Damien is now a handicapped dog blind dog getting ready to lose his family because the owner of the apartment has a “NO DOG POLICY” and they are on the 3rd floor.

I was told that they only plan on staying there for a year and then finding another place. They are hoping Damien could be placed in a foster home until they can move . . . .

Damien is really a super kool dog non-aggressive, well trained by Jay.

CONSIDER DAMIEN as a foster love for you till he can be reunited with his guardians!

PITStop Community Assist: BRETT! DDR cares about cats too!

On April 26, a good samaritan by the name of Gary found an injured cat that was emaciated, had abscess infections, swelling, etc. He brought it to the attention of Sondra from the non-profit rescue group Friends For Animals(DDR is a project within FFA)and she decided to take him in. This injured kitty is now named Brett and Sondra is seeking assistance from good souls to nurse this neglected kitty back to health. Brett needs major medical attention and rehab.

He has Feline AIDS but that is the least of his worries as you can see from the pictures. Brett was totally dehyrated when he was found and suffering from an enormous infection on the side of his head…the skin is black and dead. He has been in surgery they found maggots in the wounds.

Poor Brett was a mess, but Sondra is doing an excellent job caring for him but again, needs the assistance of others out there to keep up with Brett’s medical costs. Brett (and Sondra) will be footing a $900 vet bill and she needs help!
To see the extent of Brett’s condition, please click on the following link: WARNING: Graphic photos: BRETT’S INJURIES

If you are able, please help! Here is Friends for Animals donation page, click on I WANT TO HELP BRETT GET WELL– please designate BRETT (Cat) VET BILLS under purpose. Your donation is tax-deductible! It’s a win-win for you and Brett!

We will post updates on Brett’s ascent to wellness! Thank you for your concern and assistance!

DDR just doesnt care about the barks! We also care about the purrs!!
Go BRETT!!!!!! We’re rooting for you!
UPDATED PICTURES: BRETT IS DOING WELL
and LOVING HIS TOWEL THERAPY
Thanks to everyone who donated to Brett’s Vet Bills!
He’s turning out to be a pretty boy!

DDR YOUTH MATTER: DDR Adoption Show Team Members: Katie & Carly Carrasco

The second installment of the DDR Youth Matter section of PITStop bring us two awesome sister siblings Carly: age 17, Senior (12th Grade) at San Dimas High School Katie: age 14, Freshman (9th Grade) at San Dimas High School!

They are part of our dedicated volunteer PETCO Show Team that come every Saturday to highlight our dogs to interested visitors! Having them there brings a youthful vibe that’s just plain fun for everyone involved! They are intelligent young women with definite opinions and viewpoints! Bravo!

We hope that they will continue to come back even when their school project is over!!!!! Thank you ladies for all your great work!

Carly & Katie

1)How did you hear about Downtown Dog Rescue?

Carly:I heard about Downtown Dog Rescue from our Dad, who first heard about this dog rescue from his parent’s neighbor, Celeste, a friend of Sandy’s (and her husband).

Katie: I heard about it from my sister Carly, who heard it from our Dad, who heard it from Celeste (a friend of Sandy and her husband).

2)What is this project you’re involved with and what is the purpose of the project? How long is the project supposed to run?

Carly:The project I am involved in is the San Dimas High School Senior Connection Project or SCP for short. The purpose of this project is unknown to me. I enjoy volunteering, but presenting it in front of a panel of teacher judges, and writing a research paper is a complete waist of my time. I started this project my Junior year of high school and it goes until May 26, 2010 (the day I present my project to the teachers).

Katie:The project I am involved in is the San Dimas High School Connection Project. There is not a specific purpose to this project. The project is going to run through my four years of high school.

DDR Doggy Snippets: Awaiting Summer

LARRY

From Lori:

If someone is looking for a quiet, mellow, very loving dog, look no further,
it’s Larry. We walked over a mile at lunch time today and I could have held
the leash with one finger. He walks so beautifully, always one step behind
me, waiting for my direction. He is so out of place at this knuckle head
pit bull kennel. He loves Janey and Medira!

VIDEO FUN!

“KURO ON DEATHROW”

Here’s a new pic of Kuro at Wed. cruise night last night. Everytime I bring him to an event, everyone shows him love and vice versa! They always say they’d adopt him if they didn’t already have one (or more) pets…He could pass for “Clancy Jr.”!
