DDR YOUTH MATTER: DDR Pit Bull School Classmate, Edgar Hernandez

We love the participation of DDR youth in our programs like Pit Bull School (Jordan & Michael), adoption events (Carly & Katie), rescue missions (Josie Gavieres’s team), blog and more!!!!

The new DDR YOUTH MATTER section will feature these up and coming animal welfare advocates doing what they do best – being youthful, dedicated and out there for the animals!
Here is an example of majorly talented Edgar Hernandez who attends the Pit Bull School on Sundays and does amazing graphics of his pit bull Queenie! Edgar also helps us out in our monthly Spay/Neuter clinics. His participation and involvement in DDR is priceless and we are thankful for it!!!!!!!

Now check out his art work! Up and coming graphic artist and ONLY 14 years old…more good things to come out of this young man we’re sure!

LORI’S CORNER: Adoption Extravaganza at DDR!

his past weekend was a very busy weekend for adoptions. We decided to book people for private appointments to meet our dogs at our kennel in Downtown LA instead of sending a few dogs out to Petco. I always take people by appointments on Saturday and Sundays but it’s usually one or two a weekend that often results in zero adoptions. This was not the case this weekend.

We got off to a slow start, our first appointment was a “no show/no call”, but our next appointment with Suzie was an adoption. She met Pepper and instantly wanted to adopt her. She had lost her two older dogs and was ready to adopt after her loss. The great thing about showing dogs at our kennel is that adopters get to see the dogs out in a small pack. When Suzie met Pepper, she was able to see her with lots of other dogs, off leash, playing with toys, running around, being a puppy. Hard to believe that just two weeks ago Pepper was going to be euthanized due to overcrowded conditions at the South LA shelter.

Next, Quattro was adopted. I will deliver him to his new home this weekend. Quattro also was set to be euthanized at the South LA shelter the day that we rescued him. His new owner Gene had been looking to adopt a dog for a very long time. He loved Quattro’s energy and intelligence. This pup is a gem. Very quick to understand what I want him to do, very social, a great boy who is going to love the dog park near his new home in Valley Village.

Sunday, Askim was adopted to a couple who live in Santa Monica that have been looking for a dog for two years. They wanted to adopt a dog but the time was never right. Now that they own a home and are more settled, it was time to get a dog and they picked Askim, our Compton Park dog. He went from being a stray at our spay/neuter clinic in the park in Compton to living in a beautiful home in Santa Monica, going to the dog park every day. What a great life […]

I would like to thank Esther and Steve for agreeing to take me in as a foster. My brothers and sisters Copper, Sugar, Turbo, Louie and Henry still need fosters or adoptive homes so if anyone out in DDR PitStop land are interested, please let Lori know .

I also want to do shout outs to awesome DDR volunteers Brittany Fulgoni and Linda Bruce who have fostered our little DDR dogs!!!!

Thank you Brittany and Linda!!!!!!

Brittany, Coco, Cosmo and Abba. Sandy’s in the background!

Secondly, I wanna thank all our old AND new Operation Safety Net donors who heeded Lori’s Birthday wish (April 1st, 2010) on CAUSES (FACEBOOK APP!) and donated various amounts to help replenish the funds for this program.

$1,180 was raised!!!!!!!

I am an OPERATION SAFETY NET dog. Lori and DDR volunteers left and right have worked on me and are trying very hard to place others to adoptive or foster homes to keep us out of the shelter system.

A lot of us are older dogs and we wont stand
a chance once we enter the shelter system.

Thank You to all of of you….

HEIGL FOUNDATION CO-spotlight! CUTE DOGS

The HEIGL FOUNDATION is one of our rescue partners! They are a wonderful organization founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl (GREY’S ANATOMY actress) in memory of a wonderful son and brother. The focus of the Foundation is to increase awareness of inhumane treatment of animals, support non-profit rescue efforts, assist homeless shelter animals with rescue and medical treatment, fund and encourage free spay/neuter clinics, place rescue dogs and cats in loving homes, and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills and dog fighting.

PICO

Pico was rescued by the Heigl Foundation from a dog hoarding situation in South LA. The woman running the kennel was capturing pit bulls off the street and taking them out of the South LA shelter on days that had reduced fees. Pico originally came from the South LA shelter. He was neutered and vaccinated but became very unwanted one he came to the horrible kennel because he wasn’t, in their words, “tough enough”. There was only one plan for Pico, allow him to be attacked by the other dogs until he, like many of the other male pit bulls, disappeared to go into a life of fighting or die by way of a slow painful death from dog fighting injuries. Luckily for Pico he made it out thanks to the Heigl Foundation. He is now a big strong happy healthy boy who is still be leash trained. He is a stubborn boy who is learning how to walk and not jump on people. He is still young, under 3 years. If you are an experienced pit bull or power breed person, Pico might be a good match. No other male dogs in the home, no cats and only intermediate and advanced dog owners should consider Pico unless you plan to work closely with a knowledgeable trainer. Pico is a good dog who is so deserving of a second chance in life. He weighs about 65lbs, has been neutered and is current on his vaccinations.

CHARLIE

R.I.P. DEBO: South Los Angeles

RIP Debo and condolences to your guardian Big P.
(Debo was a service dog for a person with disabilities)
– from your friends in DDR

SSSUP, I’m was “Debo” and special.

I was born in mid fall of 2005. I had lots of brothers and sisters but they didn’t look like me – they were sooo gray compared to me.
I had a nice shiny silvery light bronze coat and light emerald green eyes. I later came to find out, that those aliens, The Humans, called my coat color Fawn. . . They said I was a Blue Fawn
As we started to get older, my brothers and sisters were being taken away by The Humans. . .what were these Humans doing with my bro’s and sis’s. . .having them for dinner, making wall hangings or rugs . . . then my day came on December 25th 2005

This tall lean dame reached down and grabbed me up. . . my feet weren’t on the ground . . . I was flying. . . then I heard her heart beat . . . it reminded me of my mom’s when I was just a little silver pee-fry, fighting and squirming to get to momma – but this wasn’t like my momma at all – this was a hot-momma . . . she was my Queen . . . I was in luv . . . I fell sound asleep only to wake in this place that had all kinds of rooms that I hadn’t ever seen before. . . I was alone . . . where was my family . . . I kinda started to dig this place.

It wasn’t too long after landing in my new pad, that I noticed this other Human dude started to muscle in on me and my dame, whatev, I’ll deal with that Human later; I’ll pee in his shoes, leave runny poos, wipe my butt and leave butt juices on his cloths when he leaves them on the floor . . . that’ll teach him. Humans have just got to learn their limitation – She was my Dame, my woman, my Queen. She gave me a nice soft warm bed; I didn’t have to fight for food; I get picked up, held, get lots of loves, play time without my brothers and sisters hoggin’ the action. Yeap, I was growing up into a good life . . . I hope my brothers and sisters have the same good life I was having.

DDR PROGRAMS: CGC Test – 100 PitBulls in South LA!

WANTS TO CERTIFY 100 PITBULLS
AS CANINE GOOD CITIZENS IN SOUTH LA!!!!!
Can we make it happen?

WHAT IS THE CGC TEST?
(from the AKC website)

Welcome to the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program. Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you’ll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life. We sincerely hope that CGC will be only a beginning for you and your dog and that after passing the CGC test, you’ll continue training in obedience, agility, tracking, or performance events.

AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program is one of the most rapidly growing programs in the American Kennel Club. There are many exciting applications of this wonderful, entry level that go beyond the testing and certifying of dogs.
