Mercury – ID#A1087717 – is an adorable 9 month old Staffie/Blue Heeler mix. OMG! Not only is this guy freaking adorable but he also has a great personality! He is SUPER friendly and loves everyone he meets. Because of his happy go lucky nature he is a shelter favorite! Playing is his game, and he loves all kinds of toys. He considers himself a comedian and does everything he can to make you laugh. He is high energy and needs plenty of exercise/play. He is a loves to give kisses and get belly rubs. He is just a baby and has been at the shelter for over 2 months! His time is up and he needs a new family ASAP! Could you save this beautiful and unique boy???

SAD ACTIVATE UPDATE: ANGEL’S BATTLE FOR JUSTICE – Pre-trial Hearing results

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

UPDATE ON ANGEL’S PRE TRIAL HEARING:

Yesterday, Take Me Home and its supporters were surprised when the District Attorney’s office dropped the case against Angel’s alleged abuser and the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence collected by Los Angeles County Animal Control. Bottom line, we feel the Los Angeles County Animal Control Officer assigned to the case did a less than adequate job and did not properly document Angel’s case; beginning with his first visit to the defendant’s home on July 3, 2009, and ending with the shelter who did not properly document her intake on August 20, 2009.

OUR PLAN AHEAD: Take Me Home is currently meeting with advisors to seek advice on how to proceed from here and make needed change within the system for the other Angels out there. We will continue to pursue justice for all animals. We will update all of you with our course of action in Angel’s case and we welcome your involvement in seeking justice and change.

Helping TONKA & TURTLE and the CHIP-In phenomenon in Rescue Work

by Irene Soriano Brightman

If you are part of the animal rescue community on FACEBOOK and are friended by the major CROSSPOSTERS from across the United States, without fail, you will come across pleas for financial assistance to cover pull fees, vet costs and foster support for dogs that are in danger of being euthanized in shelters across the nation. Countless requests for financial assistance I’ve noticed have been done through ChipIn. What is it? Here’s the pitch from their website:
“ChipIn is a Web-based service that simplifies the process of collecting money from groups of people. We make this process quick, easy, and secure, and we provide organizers with numerous ways to get the word out about their ChipIn event.”

What does a ChipIn request look like?

ChipIn is connected to PayPal and that’s how payments are processed. They track the progress of donations and let the organizer know once donations hit the target amount. Donors can leave messages for the organizer and the progress for the drive can be followed in the cause’s home page. It seems to be the way to go for many in the animal rescue community and hundreds of ChipIn pleas have been launched for different dogs all across the country.

I myself have received numerous ChipIn requests through FACEBOOK widgets and status updates. At times it can be overwhelming. Just like how I wish I owned acres of land to house all the dogs I want to save from euthanization… when I see pleas for deaf dogs, senior dogs dumped at the shelter especially, I wanna give each time…but of course, I cannot.

One case though caught my eye and wallet. It was for two puppies housed in the Orange County Animal Care Services.

Here is the original ChipIn request from Candi Crawford requesting assistance with pulling, fostering + vet costs for two very cute pit bull puppies with very bad cases of Demodex mange. These were the pictures posted on Facebook.

Such sad faces!!! When I looked up mange, I of course found out that it was a very painful skin condition that needed extensive and costly treatment. This sealed the deal for me. Also, Theresa Meyers Fraser,
DDR Alum,Chowder’s mom was involved so I knew this wasn’t a scam. I donated money. Not a huge amount but I knew I wanted to be part of the rescue efforts for these two pups in pain. Candi’s […]

61st St Kennels Action Day RECAP!

that happened at the end of January?

Here is a very quick snippet of the video that was shot for a LA.Spot.Us journalism project headed by Anh Do and Jordi Matsumoto. They covered our rescue efforts of the 61st Street Kennel dogs and while only a small part is covered in this video, it’s a fun snippet that PITstop and DDR friends and family would appreciate. Anh and Jordi are still in pre-prod mode and working out a way to get more footage of DDR rescue work and getting it done.
ENJOY their test run! Thanks Anh and Jordi for allowing us to view it!

LORI’S CORNER: Introducing Jade to the Pack

Introducing Jade to our pack was not something that I did overnight. She is a big girl who is full of what appeared to be “crazy energy”. When I would let her out in the yard with just Cookie, my girl hid from Jade, didn’t want to play, which gave me a lot of good information on Jade. My plan was to wear her out a bit before I introduced her to some dogs. She had given us no indication that she was going to be aggressive, no growling, no guarding the gate, some barking in her crate, but nothing out of the ordinary. I released her with Askim, Bruno, Sasha, Curtis, Janey, Black Pearl, Cookie and Medira, all dogs who love to play. Jade was quickly overwhelmed and decided to lay down in the sun. In fact, she didn’t display any of the crazy puppy-like energy that she normally displayed because she was psychologically exhausted by the pack of dogs sniffing her, checking her out and in Curtis’ case, pushing her to play.

When she did decide to play, she picked Bruno, who is a favorite among a lot of the dogs. He plays just right, not too hard, always high energy, but knows when to slow it down and back off. I wish that I could say that same for Curtis or Janey who are my “pushers”. They will push and push a dog to play, regardless if the dog is done. This is always a good test to see if the new dog is going to display aggression, telling those two to back off. Jade didn’t, she simply retreated into a corner where she decided to lay down with Bruno and sun bathe.

Jade is a wonderful dog who has never had a real home. She has had several litters of puppies back to back when she was just a pup herself. She loves people, is fully obedience trained, walks well on a leash and is ready for her forever home. Please come out Saturday and check out Jade if you are looking for a beautiful blue. I want to thank the Amanda Foundation who spayed and vaccinated her and put close to a year of boarding and training into her before she came to me two weeks ago. The volunteers and staff at the Amanda Foundation did a great job socializing her with dog and people. Jade is a real gem of a dog!
