PROFILE: Cutie came in this
Temporary Foster Home on October
16th, 2010. Cutie’s owner had lost his home and the guardian could not take her – she made attempts for several months and finally contacted me.

Cutie was mainly used for breeding with her last litter being in April 2010. Cutie was severely broken down and malnourished living off fast food that the contractors brought to her while remodeling her home. Cutie’s coat was hard, lack luster, and thinning. Cutie’s coat now, is soft, silky with a full thick Sable Cinnamon coat complemented with Golden Brown Eyes. Cutie’s body is firming up nicely, considering.

Cutie loves being outside, going for walks, and car rides. She is a strong Alpha female that needs a strong Alpha owner and a pinch collar for walks. Cutie prefers the open arm approach of Pinch when going for a walk on the leash. She loves a strong Alpha male type, is very maternal to younger dogs, and does not like yappy dogs. Cutie will greet and be friends with any dog that will not show signs of aggression. She is a quick learner, has a lot of energy but well mannered during quiet time. Cutie is kitchen trained.

TRAINING: Cutie had previous training and has been re-educated with the following:

PITStop Community Assist:SWEET LITTLE HAZEL!

Sweet little Hazel is 3-4 year old
pygmy Stafforshire Terrier

Weighing only 40 to 45 pounds (full grown), Hazel would make a wonderful addition to someone’s home. Rescued from Baldwin Park shelter at the last hour, Hazel now needs to be re-homed, as her dad got a new job and will be traveling a majority of the time. Hazel is truly the sweetest littlegirl, her tail never stops wagging (in fact, her whole body wags)! She just loves to go for walks and hikes. Hazel is great with other dogs too. She may need some training to help her realize that not all dogs want to play, but she responds very well to commands, so this shouldn’t be a hard thing to correct. Hazel is potty-trained, spayed, and up to date on her vaccines. This girl is so loving and loyal.she really deserves the best forever home!

LORI’s CORNER/DDR PROGRAMS: CGC Test – Bring your dog! Free!

Downtown Dog Rescue invites you to come out to our Coliseum Dog Class this Sunday February 20th to have your Pit bull tested for Canine Good Citizenship Certification by Mark Tipton with AngelDogs Foundation.

There is no penalty for not passing and it’s a great way to find out what you need to practice with your dog to pass. Our goal is to certify more Pit bull type dogs living in South Los Angeles and the surrounding communities that often lack information and access to Canine Good Citizenship Certification. CGC certification is so important for anyone who rents and owns a pit bull type dog. Passing CGC could mean that your dog will be the exception to a “no pit bull” rule in an apartment or condo complex, keeping more dogs out of shelters!

If you have a social dog, friendly with people and other dogs and you are interested in testing for CGC RSVP

Lori@modernica.net We certified 10 dogs at our last meeting. Help us reach our goal of certifying 100 dogs in South Los Angeles!

The Coliseum Dog Class meets every Sunday at 9:30AM in the front of the entrance to the Coliseum off MLK blvd – (park at the Hoover lot)

Our class is the only location in South LA that tests dogs for CGC certification.

LORI’S CORNER: February is national spay/neuter awareness month

One month ago, I loaded up Kirby into a crate in my car after she was spayed in the park in Compton. The man that brought her to the clinic, Daniel, was not her owner, nonetheless, she adored him and his dog and was upset when he filled out the paperwork and drove off. He would have loved to keep her, since she got along beautifully with his dog but he was living in his van, parking at a truck yard in Compton until he could find work as a cross country truck driver. The recession hit him hard, all he had in life was his cell phone, his van and his beloved dog. Then Kirby walked into his life. He could not bear to watch her have another litter of pups so he started to call around to see who could spay her for free. The Coalition for Pets and Public Safety sent him out to us and we gladly spayed and vaccinated her at no charge. Proving my belief that free is often the only way that high volume spay/neuter will work and reaching out to the most needy is often achieved only when using a mobile clinic.
February is national spay/neuter awareness month and there are lots of great programs out there providing low cost and even free spay/neuter services but it’s only for a month. Many people who need the services the most can’t find a clinic or can’t pay the “low cost” Most regular vets charge hundreds of dollars to spay a large breed dog and the most needy dog owners living in underserved areas of Los Angeles don’t have that kind of money so they wait and often this results in accidental litter of puppies. I listened to a call this week on our hotline. The caller sounded desperate, he can’t deal with more litters of puppies, there have been too many and he needs to “fix the situation” . If he can’t fix his situation, he finished his message by letting us know that he would have no choice but to take his dog to the pound.
I strongly believe that there is a small percentage of people who actually want to breed their dogs for money. Most people, if given the option to sterilize their dog and it’s free, very close to their home and extremely convenient, they […]
