FRIDAY BOW DOWNS FROM DOWNTOWN DOG RESCUE!

Downtown Dog Rescue would like to thank the generous supporters
who answered
the plea to contribute to Cowboy’s retirement fund!
Here is Cowboy’s big THANK YOU smile on his way to his forever foster home in Arizona with a DawgSquad Dog Rescue volunteer’s mom who loves old dogs!
With your help, we raised $623.82 to cover his veterinary bills and med care package to his new foster home.
We established a CHIPIN and raised $510.30 from 10 contributors. We did a $5.30 plea from our FACEBOOK network through FundRazr and raised $138.90 from 10 contributors. Many of you wanted to stay anonymous so we will honor that and only put your initials for our big thank you.

We wanted to report back that Cowboy’s final vet bill from BER MAR PET HOSPITAL came to $705.80.This amount covered the following procedures and services: a urinalysis, x-rays for the tumors on his chest, fine needle biopsy, senior blood panel, medicine for hypothyroidism and medical boarding. We sent along with him on his trip to his forever foster home a long-term supply of eyedrops and medicine to keep him comfortable for the rest of his days.
Thank you for helping us cover a majority of the cost!

PITStop Community Assist: OPAL, the tripod beauty!

ADOPT ME! I’m Opal – the world’s sweetest tripod dog. My original so-called owners neglected me in a backyard with three other dogs. My back left leg developed a blood clot and my foot went numb. For months it just dragged behind me and got gnawed on by the other dogs. Food was scarce and I often was left out of mealtimes because of my injury. Finally, my people took me to the vet but only because they wanted to put me down. I was so scared! By this time my paw was just a stub, and pretty gross because it was infected and rotten. The kind vet offered to amputate my leg for free, but my owners still wanted me put to sleep! Thank goodness I was relinquished to the vet who rescued me, did my surgery and saved my life. Even though I have been through a lot, I LOVE people. I am so grateful for kindness, food, and attention, I want to kiss everyone I meet!

I am getting around great on my three legs and have discovered I love cats – they are really fun nap partners. I would love a home of my own with kind people who will care for me forever. I’m kind of a miracle myself, so I believe my special dream of a family who loves me will come true soon!

Opal is a healthy 1 year old, female, 3 legged pitbull mix. She is spayed and fully vaccinated.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHT! VALENTINES DAY is coming and PLANET SPECK wants you decked out!

From the Planet Speck blog of our Marketing guru here in DDR, Nick Carranza:

I’ve been busy at work rebranding and creating marketing pieces to help create awareness, and ultimately try and help raise money for Downtown Dog Rescue (D.D.R.). Since Valentines Day is upon us, I thought I’d try a fundraising T-shirt . I had this sad eyed photo of Speck(of Planet Speck) and always wanted to use it for something, what better than fundraising for pitbull advocacy? I hope you’ll consider supporting Downtown Dog Rescue, who last year provided FREE spay and neuter to over 700 dogs in South L.A. alone!

Being that I’m using Zazzle.com for the first time, I went ahead and ordered a shirt for my wife, just to make sure quality wasn’t an issue. To my critical eye, I had no complaint. Great work Zazzle!

All proceeds will be donated to Downtown Dog Rescue.

ACTIVATE: Project Coco – We need help!

An army of volunteers from several of Los Angeles’ most reputable animal rescue organizations have spent countless hours, days and weeks working to ensure the near 100 dogs and 25 cats abandoned in the Mojave Desert are safe and in the care of those who will provide them with the love and care they so rightfully deserve. This past weekend, we spent time tearing down fences and cleaning up the property to ensure that no more animals could be put into the same unsafe and unsanitary hoarding situation that these 125 souls knew as their home for far too long. We now face the next step.

Now that all of the animals are safely off of the treacherous property, we need help finding foster homes and adoptive homes for each of the dogs. If you know anyone who can offer a safe haven for a dog until it finds a forever home, please contact us immediately.

It is currently costing $700 a week to board all of the dogs that were pulled from the property. We’ve already spent countless amounts of money on spaying and neutering these animals, not including the special medical attention that was absolutely necessary for so many. In order to get all of the dogs through boarding, we need to raise $3,000.00. Every donation counts. We’re asking our supporters to please help us spread the word by sharing this note across Facebook and sending out pleas to animal loving friends and family members.

Karma Rescue has set up a special PayPal account for this emergency situation. All donations are secure and 100% tax deductible!
Please help us finish Project Coco and help these amazing animals by clicking the link below and donating any amount you can afford!

LORI’S CORNER: Mojave Dog Project the end is near

For the past several months, DDR has been intensely involved in rescuing close to 100 dogs stranded out in the middle of the Mojave desert. This was a monumental collaboration of many great rescues, coming together to rescue these dogs, one by one, week after week. Last Sunday, a huge team effort, lead by Karma Rescue this week, rescued all but 8 dogs off the property, thanks to New Leash on Life, Pawd Squad, Southern CA Lab Rescue, Labs and Buddies and Cattle Dog Rescue, with volunteers coming in to help from HSUS and Red Nose Lucy Foundation and our Coliseum Dog Class.

Dog Man was in action, catching some of the feral dogs on the property, getting them into secure pens, while Jordan and Edgar helped chase the ferals towards the pens. What a day, what a team.

Check out the video made by a Karma Rescue volunteer, it’s terrific!

On Friday, Billy who works with me at the kennel six days a week, rented a truck and drove up to Mojave to pick up the 7 dogs that needed to be spayed/neutered, 6 of them feral including the Coyote dog. He successfully captured every dog with the help of our friend Diane Kinder who works with New Leash on Life. Amazingly, they all went nicely into the crates and made it to the vet safely, no easy task! Angel Dogs Foundation had already spayed/neutered all the other dogs on the property but could not catch these last dogs.

Every dog there needed a second chance. Their stories were all sad, some had homes that were lost due to foreclosure, some had always lived in the kennel, like the sweet but shy Amelia that volunteer Wendy is fostering for DDR. She is doing an amazing job with this dog who has never had a home. Whereas, dogs like Trinidad went right into a home, without missing a beat, into her forever home in Tustin like she always lived there.

Dog Beds for LA Animal Services Care Centers
Organized by Shelter Animal Advocacy Fund, Los Angeles

Subject: LAAS shelter dogs want you to go “Bed-A-buy”

Hello Friends and Animal Lovers,
A few weeks ago during the record rainfalls, a volunteer helped raise funds for dog beds at East Valley shelter (one of six LA city shelters). Because of the design of the shelters, the dogs are inadequately protected from the rain and forced to lay on cold, wet blankets or concrete. The beds have proven to be a huge success and we’ve started a campaign to buy beds for ALL the LA city shelters that have this same problem.

Please read Sherry’s plea below and consider donating to our cause and see why these beds are not only going to protect dogs from the elements when it rains, but provide comfort throughout every season!

Even if you can’t donate, please pass this message along.

Thank you!
Debbie

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago, I sent out a plea for donations to purchase Perla Beds** for the dogs in the East Valley Animal Shelter, who are in kennels that are unprotected from the weather elements, especially rain. Thanks to the many people who contributed to the cause, 79 beds were delivered last week and placed in as many kennels (there are approximately 200 kennels total). A campaign is underway to purchase lots more (presently for the East Valley, Harbor, West L.A. & North Central shelters).

It’s not raining now, you might say. However, the photos I took when I returned to the shelter to see if the dogs were enjoying them speak volumes – Perla Beds may also provide a comfort zone for dogs that are […]
