DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: Dena

HELLO,
I am Dena also called “Miss Social Butterfly”!
I love people and dogs, nothing is more fun
than new friends in my opinion.

I am almost 10 months old now

and still have that “puppy energy” humans refer to.
I also liketo relax,
so I have been told that I will probably be a medium energy dog,
around 50 pounds as I mature.
I have learned basic commands,
am house broken
(of course…I am not a baby…),
crate trained.
I am very happy and content,
no anxiety here!

LORI’s CORNER: “I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up.-MLK Jr.”

“I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, men other-centered can build up. I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive goodwill will proclaim the rule of the land.”

Yesterday at our Coliseum Dog Class, the crew from the Pit Boss TV show came out to film Edgar and Queeny and the class. I was amazed at the turn out, 52 dogs came out to represent Dog Man and his wonderful work and to support Edgar. I guarantee you, the class members old and some new, did not come out to “just be on TV” each and every person and their dog(S) came out to show that we support each other and we believe, the pit bull terrier is first and foremost a dog.

Dogman & Clancy
When Dog Man made the turn, right, down into the Sports Arena, Clancy and I knew it was time for recall work. Wow, I thought to myself, this is going to be crazy to do off leash work with 52 dogs but as always, Dog Man was in control and everything turned out great, with help from Jordan and Debbie. Even Shorty and Hercules did some off leash recall for the show. When I looked out at the amazing group of dogs, almost all pit bulls, patiently sitting or laying down, row after row, waiting for their turn I was also so happy to see the diverse group of class members, old and young, and broad range of ethnicities, Korean, Black, Guatemalan, Mexican, Chinese, White, I’m sure that I’m missing some but this is what I saw. Everyone working together, towards one common goal, socializing their dogs, protecting the image of the pit bull terrier that is a breed of dog not different species. I like this statement on the Animal Farm Foundation website and hope that you pass this along to anyone who wants to put a label on all pit bulls. Like people, each dog is […]

It’s quite urgent now that be in a loving and caring home. You can contact me at (323) 500-9993 or simply send me a “hello”! please let us know if you have any questions. We are here for you.   Veronica Rivas

Calling all active, loving people with a nice big yard! He is an active, happy, sweet, sweet dog. Bruno and his sister’s owner lost their home and were turned over to the shelter. He was just days of being euthanized. A staff favorite they held him as long as possible. He is now in boarding and has been in for nearly a month and a half.. he really needs a home. The ideal place for him is with someone that has more than anything the time and space..because of some of his learned behavior he is also best suited with someone that is firm with setting boundaries. He is all about love and companionship.. Pit Bull Terrier/Mix, 7 years old, altered, all shots current, microchipped, loves being with people.. (323)500-9993

DDR DOG SPOTLIGHT: Kirby

KIRBY

Kirby is an English Bull Dog mix with Pit bull Terrier that was rescued by a homeless man in Compton who took her out of horrible situation at a truck yard where she was starved and she had no shelter. This man was determined to help her in a everyway he could. He brought her to our mobile clinic in Compton, explained where she was living and the fact that she was going back to a place where she was unwanted. Taking one look at her, skinny, filthy dirty, the look on her face of a defeated dog who had too many litters to count in her short life, DDR decided to take her into our rescue. She is a very sweet dog that we estimate to be under 2 years. She lived with many other dogs at the truck yard and likes everyone she meets. This is a low energy
“bully type” of dog that is happier to lie on your couch than go and chase squirrels and hunt. She would make a wonderful apartment or condo dog because she does not require a lot of exercise and space to burn off energy like most pit bull terriers. Once she gains weight and muscle, she will be low and wide like an English Bulldog. Please consider adopting or even fostering Kirby.

Kirby is:
already spayed
housetrained
good with kids
good with dogs
up to date with shots

PITStop Community Assist: PONYBOY CURTIS

Take Me Home Animal Rescue needs a foster home or forever home for Ponyboy Curtis! Ponyboy is so loving, good with dogs and great with people and kids of all sizes. He loves to walk, hike and use the treadmill! He is so darn easy on leash and walks right by your side. He is approximately 65 pounds. His face alone will melt your heart – he has the biggest Boxer jowls. Some people think he may be mixed with Mastiff and that is why he has such a great, easy-going disposition. Whatever he is mixed with, he is simply magnificent and everyone who meets him falls in love!

Ponyboy has a severe skin infection (not contagious to animals or humans), anemia and an infected tail. He had several non-cancerous growths removed from his back and is healing from a prostate infection. He is only about three years old, but has already been through so much. Poor Ponyboy is so confused and barks when he is left alone (we are working on this and he’s doing better) and dribbles urine ever so slightly from his prostate infection which is continually resolving. Ponyboy is neutered and up-to-date on all shots. Foster or adoption entails medication administered three times daily, weekly blood tests at our vet in West Los Angeles and weekly baths (also done at our vet). Vet appointments will be scheduled for every Saturday. He can be left alone in his crate for three to four hours at a time and is completely crate trained.

Take Me Home will supply his foster or forever family with all meds/instructions, his food, his crate and any other necessary items he may need. We will also be on-hand to help get him to and from vet appointments, if needed.

Our sweet big boy just really needs a soft bed to land in and someone to love him!

MESSAGE FROM LORI WEISE

A hoarder dumped 75 dogs which quickly became 85 dogs in two weeks when dogs starting birthing their litters, in teh middle of the Mojave desert with no real shelter. Best Friends brought my attention to the situation. We raised enough money to bring Angel Dogs Foundation’s mobile clinic out to the site, spayed/neutered all the dogs, vaccinated and microchipped too. Lots and lots of rescues have come in to rescue the dogs off the property. There are still about 30 dogs, the more difficult to place ones are there which include, under socialized and older dogs that are in need of medical attention now. We have permission to continue to network the dogs from the property owner. Yesterday, a team of volunteers and some of my workers, built dog houses, reinforced and enlarged pens, making life better for the dogs that are still on the property. We need experienced local rescues to take more dogs. We are not allowing dogs to be shipped out of state or to Canada, we’ve had many offers. These dogs have been dumped before, as this is the way that this hoarder operates. Some of the dogs have been born and raised in a chain link run. Most of the dogs that have been rescued are already in homes, although some are still in fosters and need to be adopted. The dogs that I personally took are wonderful, very sweet dogs that did not deserve to live like that. No person or dog should have to live like […]

LORI’s CORNER/DDR PROGRAMS: CGC Test – Schedule for 1st quarter of 2011

On Sunday, we tested 25 dogs and passed 10 of which 8 were Pit bull type dogs! The Coliseum Dog Class is the only location in South Los Angeles where the community can come out once every six weeks to test for Canine Good Citizenship Certification. Mark Tipton with Angel Dogs Training evaluated each every dog for four hours! Dogs that did not pass are welcome to come back and test again. Their owners left the park with “homework” so that next time their dog will pass! CGC is one more way we are keeping more dogs in their homes and out of the Shelter System.

Come out and support our program on the following dates:

Sunday, February 20th
and
Sunday, April 3rd

We are happy to report that our rescue partner,
JANET COOK’s DAISY
