WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : ROCKET!

This is the story of Rocket the Dog,
as told to his mother,
Patti Harris

Hello everyone, this is Rocket speaking (formerly Yoda) and I would like to say WOOF WOOF to all my friends at the Downtown Dog Rescue. Boy, while I was walking those streets of Compton, I never imagined that life could be so cushy. When the authorities finally caught up with me, I thought it is was all over! Then they took to this place where I had ‘nip and a tuck”. Ouch that hurt!

Then I was on my way to a new foster family in Pasadena. I was finally on the receiving end of treats. One day in the middle of January, a family came to visit to check me out! I wasn’t looking my best yet and my ears were way too big for my little body (Hence the name Yoda). This was a nice family and the mommy came with treats for me! I wasn’t sure if they had a name picked out, so I just knew what to do. I made a quick break and I ran fast down the street and made my new momma chase me. When we finally made it back to the house, I knew I had secured my new name – Rocket Dog.

I had a little difficulty settling in at first…I mean, who invented this thing called a “doggie door”? It kept hitting my tail until I figured out how to speed up! My first night was so sweet…I slept on the bed, in-between my new mommy and daddy. I knew right away that this was going to work out fine! I have this yard all to myself, except I cannot figure out what to do about this big thing of water in the middle. No matter how many times I bark at it, it doesn’t move.

About a month ago, my new doggie siblings arrived for a visit. Both rescue dogs, both Maltese. It has been fun when they are over because we are all the same size and have fun together. If you look at the picture of me lounging in the back yard, you will see a cute Maltese – her name is Gizmo. Isn’t she pretty?

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

It’s THANK YOU FRIDAYS and today is dedicated to two wonderful volunteers namely INDIE PRINTING awesomeness, Frankie Carranza and talented South LA rapper Sandman Negus.

And who this week will do the honors to thank these two guys? It’s our beautiful Jade!!!

She got adopted this week and why not? Look at this sweet and beautiful girl…so..let’s do this…JADE?

I would like to thank first and foremost, my newly adoptive family for choosing to adopt me!

Second of all like previously mentioned we want to send out a special shout out to SANDMAN and FRANKIE!

Lori and DDR are very excited about the new Compton Spay/Neuter flyers that Frankie designed and Sandman profiled. We know that these flyers and postcards will surely attract many Compton residents to make use of our monthly DOG CLINIC so many more people will have the needed information and hopefully have their pitbulls fixed. There’s too many of us in South LA running around that will end up in the shelter and get euthanized. I’m spayed…and thank goodness for that…

Thank you Jade, wow, able to say thanks and spread the goodness about SPAY/NEUTER…good girl! Your ears are up! You’re being called by your new family!!! Run!!!!! Have a great life JADE!!!!!

Again, from DDR – much thanks to Frankie and Sandman!

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS: Giving Thanks

This week was a special adoption week for many of the volunteers of DDR and especially Lori and one great pitty with a dream. Indeed we want to give thanks in HUGE PROPORTIONS. Our beloved CocoPuff with his long standing dream got adopted!!!!

After living in the DDR kennels for three years, Coco Puff never even got one single inquiry, application or visit. It would seem that no one was interested in him until last week. An
“out of the box” adoption, Coco Puff has finally found someone that will care for him for the rest of his life. Coco Puff will now be an active road dog in San Pedro, traversing the streets with his pack leader. It would only seem right that Coco would do the Thank You honors this week-

Ready Coco? GO!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank first of all the person who adopted me…Errol. It’s nice to finally have someone love me and take me into their life. Thank you Errol! Lori and a lot of DDR volunteers and friends are cheering us on! You made my dream come true! A special thanks too to Cynthia Larkin for introducing you to Lori and DDR so you could find me!

Talking about new beginnings…DDR would like me to extend a HUGE thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan and the foundation named after them,The Cesar and Illusion Millan Foundation for their generous donation to assist with medical care, boarding and spay/neuter surgeries for the 61st Street Kennel dogs. Providing care and support for all the dogs rescued from the 61st Street kennels earlier this year posed a big financial and logistical challenge for a fairly small rescue like Downtown Dog Rescue and with the great news we got this week, namely the Foundation’s assistance, we can now continue to provide the needed care to give them and more dogs another chance for a good life. Thank you Sean Hawkins from the Foundation and of course thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan!

Wow! Thanks Coco…Coco!?! Coco’s asleep!

He’s been walking the streets of San Pedro with Errol, being introduced as the new road partner! He’s pooped! lol! Ok, go ahead and sleep Coco!!! Live a happy and long life — we will […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

This Friday is all about the ladies — one of our pretty ladies will be thanking two lovely young ladies who help us with our DDR work!

And who is this pretty lady doing the honors? It’s ROXY!!!! Just as soon as we put up her information as being available for a forever home, a family snapped her up right away! Of course, we’re not surprised! She’s a sweet, beautiful girl!

HOORAY! She will now be in a lovely home!!!!! Roxy!!!
Here she is with the new fam!

So Roxy…ready to extend our thanks to your human counterparts?
READY! GO!!!!!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank two girls who have been faithfully present every Saturday to help do adoptions and watch over us at PETCO as part of a school project that they have to complete. They’re sisters!

Carly and Katie! Thank you, you two!!!!!

We love that both of you have chosen Downtown Dog Rescue as your community project…it only makes it better for us to be around good energy! You are always welcome to drop by again even when your project is done!

Watch out next Tuesday, when PITStop does a DDR YOUTH MATTERS feature on them both!

Ok Roxy —- great job, go run to your new family and live a wonderful, new life! Thanks Carly and Katie! We at DDR are thankful for your presence and dedication!

Ok everyone! See you all next week!

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

YAY! It’s Friday and we can give thanks!
Who’s ready to do the fun stuff?
Of course it’s our new adoptee of the week!!!
We’re going to give ASKIM and PEPPER!!!!!!!!

We are thanking an awesome organization AND our very dear adopters!!!!!
Without these two important elements, well, we’re nowhere…
so hip hip hooray!!!!!

Askim? Pepper? Ready??? Set GO!

On behalf of Lori and DDR, we would both like to thank the Animal Farm Foundation for sponsoring DDR’s CGC trials (Canine Good Citizenship Test) for pit bulls). Their Incentive award program has really helped us reach out to new people in the community and have their beloved pits AKC certified!

So far, we have certified 9 dogs and have been awarded a total of $1,350 which in turn will pay for the medical care for the dogs that we rescue.

Another program that we are involved in that they sponsor is their Spay/Neuter program. We were awarded a $5,000 grant to spay/neuter 100 pitbulls in the next year! Without the support of this Foundation, DDR could not continue to help as many people and dogs that we do every month. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Below is a photo of Robin and Zena who passed the CGC test. Zena was rescued from the shelter on the day that she was supposed to be euthanized!

Please read the very important statement on
“At the heart of our organization’s mission is the knowledge that all dogs are individuals, and must be treated as such. We work specifically on behalf of dogs labeled as “pit bulls” not because they are different from any other dogs, but because they are […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS – Giving Thanks!

It’s our favorite day of the week! THANK YOU DAY FRIDAYS!
We want to give special thanks to two groups of people this week!

The first one are our fosters!
The second are the donors that gave to Lori Weise’s CAUSE Birthday Wish
to help fund OPERATION SAFETY NET!

Who do we have to help us this week?
Of course a recently fostered DDR dog!!!!
Our handsome PITStop dog of the week 2 weeks ago!
COSMO!

Ready Cosmo? Because, you will be thanking
the sweet family that will foster you!
GO!!!!!

I would like to thank Esther and Steve for agreeing to take me in as a foster. My brothers and sisters Copper, Sugar, Turbo, Louie and Henry still need fosters or adoptive homes so if anyone out in DDR PitStop land are interested, please let Lori know .

I also want to do shout outs to awesome DDR volunteers Brittany Fulgoni and Linda Bruce who have fostered our little DDR dogs!!!!

Thank you Brittany and Linda!!!!!!

Brittany, Coco, Cosmo and Abba. Sandy’s in the background!
Secondly, I wanna thank all our old AND new Operation Safety Net donors who heeded Lori’s Birthday wish (April 1st, 2010) on CAUSES (FACEBOOK APP!) and donated various amounts to help replenish the funds for this program.
$1,180 was raised!!!!!!!

I am an OPERATION SAFETY NET dog. Lori and DDR volunteers left and right have worked on me and are trying very hard to place others to adoptive or foster homes to keep us out of the shelter system.

A lot of us are older dogs and we wont stand
a chance once we enter the shelter system.

Thank You to all of of you….
