LORI’S CORNER: Behind every Spay/Neuter Clinic are our sponsors

Last Saturday, we had another very successful Compton Community Dog Clinic. Our day was fully booked, of course, we always have a percentage of “no-shows” so we tell people to just show up and wait. The wait list was longer than the available slots, the dogs that we were not able to accommodate will be spayed/neutered at our next double day clinics on November 27th and 28th. The clinic on the 27th is being sponsored by Beth Shaw of Yoga Fit. She generously donated to pay for one complete day of spay/neuter surgeries so that we could accommodate everyone on our list. Angel Dogs Foundation will be our clinic provider that weekend. BARK reading dogs will be coming out on the 27th and we will have lots of giveaways and prizes!
There is always at least one dog at every clinic that is the highlight of our day. On Saturday, it was “Hercules” a Boston Bull Terrier – Pit bull Terrier mix. His owner had no proof of income, spoke no English and brought her daughter with her to translate. They walked up later in the day, when we were already full for the day. Renee the vet tech saw Hercules, opened the door, spoke to the owner in Spanish, came back and said, “Dr. Mori said we can do one more dog!” A dog like Hercules would probably never be neutered if our mobile clinic was not in the park. This is what the Compton Community dog clinic is all about. We are there the second Saturday of every month at East Rancho Dominguez Park on the corner of Atlantic and Compton Blvd from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM offering free spay/neuter surgeries to Compton dog owners. To date, we have done almost 600 surgeries and will end our year at over 700 surgeries! If you would like volunteer, donate children’s reading /picture books, have new collars, leashes, dog toys to donate, please get in touch with me. We are always in need of giveaways for our Compton Clinic.

PITStop Community Assist: CUTIE needs a HOME!

HI ! My name is Cutie. I am wearing a beautiful Sable Cinnamon coat, a pink nose and beautiful brown eyes. I am an American Staffordshire Pit bull Terrier mix. I an updated on all my shots (10-16-2010) including a microchip implant (11-6-2010) and waiting to be registered when I become adopted.

I just came out of spay surgery on November 6th, 2010 and have been instructed no long walks for two weeks. – WHAT a relief ! –
No more kids ! It will take me 3 to 4 months to get my shape back! The vet estimates my age to be approximately 2 – 3 years old.

I am a rescued person that had been homeless since April of 2010 but was finally saved October 16th, 2010. I became homeless because the property owner lost the property and my owner lost his rental unit. The new owner did not want me – I guess because of the way I looked. The contractors for the new owner were nice to me and came everyday – they gave me water and brought me their kinda food.

When I was rescued and taken into the temporary foster family, I was so crestfallen and beside myself – I wept for two weeks every time I ate my food or went for a walk because it was always the food was for me and I didn’t have to eat garbage any more. The walks reminded me of what a home and family was like. I felt so unloved and discarded at first. But My temporary foster Mom/Rescuer has 3 other rescued dogs that I know – Boxer, Buddy and Nutmeg. I am currently doing the Mom-Thing playing with Nutmeg – a six month old female – she was taken from her mommy when she was about 3 weeks.

LORI’S CORNER: READY TO WORK

On Sunday, Cynthia Bathurst from Best Friends came out to watch our Coliseum Class and what a class she watched! 36 dogs, all walking, jumping, running and working, without any fights! This is a big deal since some of the dogs in the class have leash or dog aggression issues or both. From 9:30-11:30 or longer, every Sunday, Cornelius “Dog Man” Austin, leads us on a course that runs from Figueroa and MLK blvd over to Vermont and back to the entrance of the Coliseum. We run the dogs through what we call our “urban agility course” over cement benches, walls, relay races and so much more! It’s a great work out for all the dogs and their handlers, one that Clancy looks forward to every week.

Cynthia leads the Safe + Humane Chicago program that promotes responsible dog handling by youth leaders for the community of dog owners who may not be able to afford traditional dog training classes. She is considering bringing a chapter to Los Angeles, where some of our youth handlers, Edgar and Jordan are being considered as potential leaders for their communities. Edgar discussed the challenges that he faces on a daily basis with his dog Queenie, living in Hawthorne where he is often approached by people who want to know if he is interested in fighting Queenie. Jordan lives near Crenshaw and has raised and trained his dog Pretty since she was a puppy. His goal is to become a professional dog training. A program sponsored by Best Friends in communities like South LA, Compton, Watts, Hawthorne, possibly Inglewood and Carson would do so much to prevent dog fighting, irresponsible breeding and animal cruelty! Stay tuned for more exciting information!

MEET 8 OF OUR LOVELIES!

Sasha

Pit Bull Terrier/Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix
Medium • Young • Female

Sasha is a young Pit bull mixed . She absolutely loves other dogs, and would do best in a home with lots of action, and at least one other dog. She is friendly and outgoing with people, and quickly makes friends on and off leash with every dog that she meets. She is a dog park type dog, one that I would not hesitate in telling an adopter, take her to any dog park, and let her enjoy! She came to us after being rescued by a private rescuer, who asked us for help placing her. She is crate, and leash trained, knows basic commands, and is ready for her forever home. She would make a wonderful family dog, since she is also great with kids. Not sure about kitties, but has shown no interest in harming them, she appears to just want to chase and play with them.

Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • House trained

Pearl

Pit Bull Terrier
Medium • Young • Female

Pearl is a super friendly young pit bull terrier who gets along with all dogs, every size and age. She is also ok with cats. At only 35lbs, she is a tiny little girl who is leashed trained, crate trained, loves going on car rides and going to the park. This is the type of pit bull that you can take to a dog park, sit at an outdoor cafe, go to Runyon Canyon or Griffith Park with no worries about dog aggression. She is simply wonderful. She is OK with children and everyone she meets. She is more on the […]

ADOPT OUR DOGS! Meet us this Saturday!!!! VCA PET ZONE at the ROSE BOWL!

AT THE ROSE BOWL THIS SATURDAY
BEFORE AND AFTER THE GAME!
12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Meet
HANDSOME
from Downtown Dog Rescue

Handsome is a 10 month old Pit bull Terrier + English Bull Dog mix also known as a Bully. He had a young owner who decided that with school and other activities, owning a dog was not something that he could handle.

Still a puppy, he turned to DDR to help him find Handsome a home. We have been in Handsomes life from the start.

Our organization paid to vaccinate and neuter him, we spayed his mama dog and Handsome has been coming out to Pit bull School practically as soon as he was weaned. He is leash trained, house trained and loves other dogs. This is a very sweet dog with a gentle temperament.

We estimate he will weigh about 60lbs at full maturity. He has been microchipped and is current on his vaccinations.

and

PEGGY
from The Dawg Squad

Peggy was at the South LA Shelter and a plea went out to rescues to get her….she was terrified at the shelter.   And once we found out that Peggy was missing her left hind paw we jumped in the car and went to get her.

She is all wiggle butt and kisses and loves to play with toys.    A soft bed is an absolute wonder to her….she pounces on them like they are going to disappear.

Peggy gets along with dogs of all shapes and sizes and her tail is always wagging!  We don’t know what happened to her paw but it is an old injury and does not slow her down.

Peggy will light up your life.   Come and meet […]

JO’S BARK: The Boxer’s Life Chapter 6 The Recovery

by Boxer, Himself

While I was fascinated with all these new smells of other homies, De Kota was becoming more and more distant not wanting to get up out of bed. She explained that she was remembering Dazy, Dallas and her baby, Daytona. WOW ! Mz. De Kota was really a mommy; she had a previous family before be . . .I often wondered what it was like being part of a family – having bros and sis’s, a mommy and daddy . . . I was abandoned and dumped off – but was happy – but that all changed

Mz. De Kota was becoming depressed it wasn’t too long ago that I remember coming into her life right after Daytona went to Rainbow Bridge. I was a THERAPY dog – I would get Mz. De Kota mad at me so she would eat. Sometimes it would be 4 or 5 days without her eating which concerned The Dame.

I remember all the other homeies at the Village and from what those huuuumans were saying, Daytona was “The Dog” and no joke. Mz De Kota said that that was all a bluff that Daytona was a real mellow dog that didn’t like cats or people waking them after we had just snuggled down for the night. Then she talked about Dallas – a green-eyed redhead with a temper to go with it. Mz. De Kota said that Dallas was a Manchester Terrier and her mommy. Dallas according to Mz. De Kota was a reincarnated po-go stick – When they would go for walks, Dallas would always walk-hop on her back legs looking back at them. Then she talked about Dazy – Dazy didn’t like her. According to Mz. De Kota, Dazy thought De Kota got rid of Dublin, one of Dazy real babies. . . Mz. De Kota told me that when she was a weeee tiny powder buff that Dublin was going to attack her and Dallas her mommy got in between Dublin and my Babe. Mz. De Kota didn’t understand at the time, but Dallas was Dublin’s main-squeeze and that this was a major argument.

Slow down there Mz. De Kota, this soap […]
