DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: BRUNO

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending the day with Bruno. He’s a relatively new DDR dog and you may have read about him on March 8 in Lori’s Corner. As she mentioned, he arrived with some leash aggression issues that no one had anticipated when he was at the shelter. Since he’s been with the pack, Bruno has been coming along great and gets to play and socialize with all the dogs’ downtown. So it was time to see how he’d do at his first Petco adoption. Adoption events can be pretty stressful for some of the dogs. You just never know how they’ll do with all the commotion of other dogs and people coming and going.

So how did Bruno do? Well…he did OK. To be honest, it was a bit stressful for him, but what helped was to keep him moving. As long as we didn’t sit in one spot too long I was able to keep him from getting worked up. There was even a group class going on in the store, which he dealt with pretty well. Two hours was a fair amount of time for his first outing so we ended on a good note and I took him home for an overnight stay. Bruno was a perfect gentleman at the house! He was super quiet and was happy lying in his crate watching us do house work. He was also very relaxed in the backyard and he even got some playtime with Ripley.

Bruno is a young dog that shows a lot of promise to be a great companion. Yes, he has some leash issues to work out, but with a consistent leader, he’ll learn to look to his person for guidance instead of trying to figure it out on his own and be much happier because of it. If you are a strong, confident person then Bruno might be just the dog for you!

ACTIVATE: Pit Bull Study; Recruiting PB owners!

From: Melanie Daye, M.A.
Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology at
I am conducting my dissertation research study and need help finding Pit Bull dog owners who would like to participate! My project is designed to examine how Pit Bull owners and their dogs are each handling various situations. Participants should be at least 18 years of age, reside in the U.S.A., and own any of the following types of dogs: Purebred Staffordshire Terriers, Purebred Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Purebred Bull Terriers, Purebred American Pit Bull Terriers, or Pit Bull Type Mixes (i.e. at least a 50% mix that includes any of the breeds indicated above.)
Participation in this study will involve the completion of a brief survey about how owners and their dogs typically react in various real-life situations. Participation is anonymous and will take approximately 15 minutes to complete; participation may help identify ways to improve pet-owner satisfaction and assist in decreasing pet abandonment.
Thank you very much for your help!!!!!

South LA Shelter Rescue Me Spotlight : URGENT!!! OUT OF TIME!!: Bubbles A1096560

BUBBLES SNAPS, CRACKLES AND POPS (though she doesn’t want to let anyone know that from the looks of this very serious photo — get that camera away from me!!)

AS YUMMY AS ANY BREAKFAST CEREAL. AND GOOD FOR YOU TOO.

Bubbles (A1096560, only 3 months old, a long-hair chihuahua/spaniel mix??), on alert since March 11th — out of time !!!!!!) came in to the shelter full of hot air. Literally. She had a pouch of subcutaneous air under her skin (check with medical for exact description) — hence, her name, Bubbles. Medical staff quickly fell in love with this little one and is happy to report that Bubbles’ snaps, crackles and pops are nearly gone. This is one frisky little miss who is looking for a home. With her puppy playfulness, she needs lots of love, some training, a few toys, and perhaps a box of Rice Krispies.

If you can help Bubbles burst out of the shelter,
call South L.A. today at (213)485-0117 or (213)485-0119.

And kindly drop us a line with the good news.
Many thanks,
Andrea & Mindy

BE IN THE KNOW: City of LA Crackdown on Unlicensed Dogs

by Irene Soriano Brightman

I saw a posting on Found Animal’s FB page this week of a story that actually broke a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the financially strapped City of Los Angeles are looking for ways to raise more $$$ and will now work with the Department of Water & Power’s database to identify customers with dogs in their homes AND use this information to enforce dog licensing requirements! Yikes! Sounds a bit scary this cross-referencing information….hmmm.

Well…off to the LA Animal Services front desk! Yikes, but first I gotta make sure my dog’s Rabies shots are up to date! Ahhhh…….

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : MADDIE!

Baby Girl/Maddie’s Adoption Photo
MADDIE

by Lindsay Worden

My husband and I were originally looking to adopt an English bulldog into our home, which also included a basset hound and a shih tzu. We don’t have kids–our dogs are our children. All of our dogs are rescues, because every homeless dog deserves a good home, and it’s our way of helping, one dog at a time.

I came across a pit bull/English bulldog mix online and e-mailed Lori about her, and although she had been adopted, we were sent a picture of Maddie (or “Baby Girl,” as she was known then at DDR), a 9-month-old three-fourths pit bull/one-fourth English bulldog mix, and we immediately fell in love with her sweet face. She and her brother, Nike, had been rescued by DDR from a home where they were about to be inbred for profit. In fact, their sister was pregnant at about eight months with their father. As soon as we moved into our first home a few weeks later, she fit right into our family.

However, about a month and a half later, my beloved basset hound of almost nine years passed away. It was heart-breaking for me because of everything I had been through with my basset in his too-short life and everything he had helped me through. But I couldn’t sit around and mope, because I had an active 10-month-old puppy to take care of. Plus, Maddie has always been so grateful just to have a good home.
Maddie goes everywhere we can take her, especially to the beach and hiking. Because I have been so used to basset hounds (not the smartest of breeds, but lovable nonetheless), I have been amazed at how quickly she picks up on everything and what a perfect dog she is. She went to a doggie training class because she was fearful of people, and she came out a completely different dog. The instructor even said, “Why is it the pit bulls are always the smartest dogs in the class?”

LORI’S CORNER: KEEPING OUR PITBULLS SOCIAL

Most of our loyal PITStop readers already know about our free pit bull training class, lead by Dog Man and Debbie, every Sunday at the Coliseum in Los Angeles but in case you were not aware, check out the video, created by Jeff Fleiss, our class videographer. Jeff compiled this video over the course of a couple months of Sunday classes.

If you own a pit bull and you need some help getting your dog social, please get in touch with me (lori@modernica.net). Our goal is to pass 100 pit bulls through our Canine Good Citizenship Certificate (CGC) program this year. On Sunday April 11th, we will be testing again. Our Sunday class helps prepare the dogs to pass the test. To learn more about CGC and to find out if you pit bull might pass, check out this LINK.

Be part of the solution, keep your pit bull social
with people and animals.
The dogs are counting on all of us!
