ACTIVATE: UPDATE on South LA Pitbull — You made a difference!

A wonderful update on the USC South LA Pitbull featured last week!

His name is TOMMY!

A special thanks to Heidi Lese for one of many
who responded and acted on behalf of Tommy!
Tommy was found near USC by Taryn and Cortney. He was malnourished and looked to have been on the streets for some time. He had no tags or other identifying information to help locate his previous owners. Tommy was a sweetheart and was perfectly content being fed and given attention by his rescuers. After being denied by any of the Pitbull rescue agencies in the area, and after feeding him a few Burger King burgers, Animal Services was called to pick him up. Once at the South LA Animal Shelter, veterinarians discovered that Tommy also had a fractured leg. He was scheduled to be put down as soon as legally allowed: 5 days after his arrival.
Meanwhile, in both LA and San Francisco, people were working to help Tommy. Taryn and Cortney were looking for a foster home or rescue agency to help Tommy. Up north, Sophia and Dave were doing the same. Despite everyone’s great efforts, no rescue agency had a place for poor Tommy.
Now, thanks to efforts by all of the above and more, we may have found a way to help Tommy. He’ll need surgery, but he could have a chance at a normal life. The two options available now are to amputate his fractured leg ($500) or to invest in repairing the leg ($2000). The prices are estimates, and time is a factor. That said, we need help to get Tommy the surgery he needs to survive.

UPDATE (March 20, 2010): Tommy’s now officially bailed out! He’s with his current foster and has spent a significant amount of his freedom getting checked out by the vet. The prognosis on his leg seems decent so far. Surgery next week. Thanks to all so far. More to come!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DDR Dog Alum Spotlight : PIRATE!

Pirate lived most of her life with a homeless woman in downtown LA until one day she could no longer care for her. Downtown Dog Rescue took Pirate into our kennel until she was adopted.

PIRATE by Christine Ishii

After the devastating loss of my first love, my first baby, Tre, who had been with me through the toughest years of my life, as well as the happiest years of my life, I had decided that there was no other dog who would ever replace him; and even if I wanted to, my busy lifestyle wouldn’t allow me to take the time necessary to raise another puppy the way I had with him.

Somehow, my friend June got in touch with me and told me about Pirate, and older but very smart dog, who needed a home. It took a while for me to agree to meet her because the hurt from the loss of Tre was so deep, but I felt a void in my life and had been wanting another dog so I finally agreed to meet Lori and Pirate.

My first meeting with Pirate was awesome. It was evident that she was a very wise dog, with a lot of soul, in fact, I don’t think she knows she is a dog! Her amazing energy and social personality drew me to her, immediately, and I respected her strong, individual personality, and I believe we were meant to be together.

Pirate has been with us for a wonderful 2 years now, and not only runs errands with us regularly, but also attends basketball practices with my daughters, Halloween parties, trips to Big Bear, and aiding in fostering “Lucky”, who gifted us with the surprise of 9 pups, all who see Pirate as their 2nd Mama. She has, without a doubt, made her way into our world, without much adjustment and has blessed us with her loving ways.

LORI’S CORNER: DDR Pack Video Spotlight

On Sunday, I had a USC Journalism graduate student shadow me to do her senior thesis on Downtown Dog Rescue. Adrianna came out to our Sunday Pit bull School at the Coliseum, and filmed the dogs running the agility course. walking the line, which was all good! Next Sunday she is coming back to film some of the dog owners in class, Jordan, Michael, Edgar, Coach and of course Dog Man, to name a few. However, the real excitement started when she arrived at our kennel at feeding time.

Larry

Edwina

Because the energy was different with extra people and a camera, plus I started the whole feeding process an hour later than usual, a fight broke out, inside the kennel. Edwina, went nuts and went after Bertha who was in her run, Larry who was on his way into his run, double backed and started attacking Edwina. The fight was over before it started and all the dogs calmed down faster than I calmed down so that Adrianna could start filming the dogs in the play yard. I set her up behind a fence and of course the dogs were all curious. Dogs that I never thought would care about the camera, like Sasha, wouldn’t stop barking, others like Bruno and Askim actually liked being filmed and really showed off all their play skills for the taping. The energy level was high, so I released half as many dogs as I normally put out together. Curtis never recovered from new people and a camera watching him, but Majick could care less and enjoyed his time out playing.

The DDR Pack

When Adrianna went inside the kennel area to film, it got really crazy, all the dogs were barking, some lunging at her, others just curious about the camera. Once we were outside of the runs, where we could talk, I asked her, I told her, “Now you see why adult pit bulls don’t get adopted out of the City shelters when they are shown in a caged environment’. The same dogs that she had seen playing in a pack, enjoying themselves, wrestling with other dogs and climbing on the ramps and tables looked like they were dog and people aggressive “behind bars” of their runs. When anyone evaluates a dog in a caged environment like a kennel or a shelter, one isn’t really seeing the “real dog”, in most […]

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: Sweet, simple & soulful ARIEL sticks her tongue out at shelter life – lab mix A1093007

ALTHOUGH THIS IS ARIEL’S REACTION TO SHELTER LIFE

SHE’S REALLY SO SWEET
(Proof positive with tail in action can be seen in this VIDEO.
Enjoy her happy ways!)

SO SIMPLE

AND OH SO SOULFUL.

Ariel (A1093007, 2 years old, with a yummy chocolate / white coat, on alert since March 7th — and way, way out of time!!!) is a good girl. Plain and simple. She’s got all the qualities you want in a friend — faithfulness, affection, a sense of fun. A bit shy at first — and certainly not one to pose for the paparazzi — Ariel is loving with everyone she meets. Kenneled with other dogs, she is on the submissive side and lets others take the spotlight. Though some might easily pass her by, Ariel was special enough to have been chosen for our SLA training program. She’s too sweet for the shelter but just right to sit in your lap. She’s too quiet for the kennels but just right to steal your heart. Please consider this soulful angel.

Call the South L.A. shelter at (213) 485-0117 or (213) 485-0119.
And kindly let us know if you can save her life.

Thanks for caring about shelter dogs,

Andrea & Mindy

UNFORTUNATELY HE WILL BE PUT DOWN….HE HAS A FRACTURED LEG AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE COLLARS CHOKE MARKS, BUT BESIDES BEING REALLY SKINNY, HE IS EXTREMELY MILD TEMPERED AND SWEET. HE JUST NEEDS A GOOD HOME AND SOME TLC…

UPDATE #2

A very sweet pittie INJURED and in SEVERE PAIN. The shelter WILL NOT keep him past Saturday because it is CRUEL. We need to get him MEDICAL ATTENTION NOW!

We have a FOSTER and she will take him to the vet. We need a rescue to step in as he is in excruciating pain.

The shelter staff LOVE him. He is a real CHAMP and loves everyone!

There were 67 dogs that were recently rescued by the SEAACA shelter from a boarding facility that was run by a person who allegedly starved, abused and severely neglected all the dogs at the boarding facility. When these dogs were picked up by SEAACA all were severely emaciated, had open skin sores and mange. Most of the 67 dogs were picked up by their owners….however dogs still remain at the SEAACA shelter and need to be adopted out as soon as possible to loving families or responsible rescue organizations.

Some of the other dogs have some degree of mange and all are very underweight. We have some available foster homes BUT need DONATIONS to cover the medical expenses. Donations are very appreciated.

These sweet dogs have gone through such a nightmare and do not deserve to die in a shelter. They are all sweet dogs and deserve to feel love, happiness and comfort.

LENNY
Hi, my name is Lenny. I’m a male Dalmatian pit mix. My rescue friends also call me stud muffin. They tell me I’m a handsome dog and just a bundle of love to be with. I walk well on a leash, listen to commands and will sit or lay down for treats. They think I am about four years old. I’m a gentle soul with so much to give.I am available for immediate adoption as I am already neutered and […]
