ACTIVATE: UPDATE on South LA Pitbull — You made a difference!

A wonderful update on the USC South LA Pitbull featured last week!

His name is TOMMY!

A special thanks to Heidi Lese for one of many
who responded and acted on behalf of Tommy!
Tommy was found near USC by Taryn and Cortney. He was malnourished and looked to have been on the streets for some time. He had no tags or other identifying information to help locate his previous owners. Tommy was a sweetheart and was perfectly content being fed and given attention by his rescuers. After being denied by any of the Pitbull rescue agencies in the area, and after feeding him a few Burger King burgers, Animal Services was called to pick him up. Once at the South LA Animal Shelter, veterinarians discovered that Tommy also had a fractured leg. He was scheduled to be put down as soon as legally allowed: 5 days after his arrival.
Meanwhile, in both LA and San Francisco, people were working to help Tommy. Taryn and Cortney were looking for a foster home or rescue agency to help Tommy. Up north, Sophia and Dave were doing the same. Despite everyone’s great efforts, no rescue agency had a place for poor Tommy.
Now, thanks to efforts by all of the above and more, we may have found a way to help Tommy. He’ll need surgery, but he could have a chance at a normal life. The two options available now are to amputate his fractured leg ($500) or to invest in repairing the leg ($2000). The prices are estimates, and time is a factor. That said, we need help to get Tommy the surgery he needs to survive.

UPDATE (March 20, 2010): Tommy’s now officially bailed out! He’s with his current foster and has spent a significant amount of his freedom getting checked out by the vet. The prognosis on his leg seems decent so far. Surgery next week. Thanks to all so far. More to come!

Subject: Up-DATE- INJURED and in SEVERE PAIN! A1099983

This handsome and VERY sweet boy is now safe in the hands of his angel Cortney Fielding. He will soon be fostered by her neighbor/friend Devin Sims.

I want to personally thank each and EVERY one of you for donating to this special boy. This was an unusual situation for me. As you all know, I usually only network for dogs who go to either an independent rescuer or non-profit status. This situation was different. Due to the very expensive surgery that rescues would have to incur, there were NO RESCUES that stepped up to save Tommy. When I saw his face, and how much he was suffering, I could not turn my back on him and neither did you. Even though no rescues would come forth to save him, Cortney , myself and countless other people kept moving forward. The response was overwhelming. Even the staff at the shelter is pitching in for his medical needs. Tommy is now SAFE and getting the medical attention he needs because of YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS! Make no mistake, Tommy would have been euthanized on Saturday had it not been for your generosity and compassion.
From my heart…I thank you.
A huge thank you to all who have helped to rescue this very special boy. Tommy had no idea that he had met an angel who would help save his life the day he followed Cortnery. TOGETHER…we can all make a difference and WE DO!
Once a nameless, homeless, starved and injured pittie…now has a home and is loved and cared for by all~
