ACTIVATE: Top 10 Reasons To Adopt A Senior Dog

by Irene Soriano Brightman

I have 2 senior dogs, my 13 year old Miniature Schnauzer, Mackie & 11 year old Dachshund, Cadi. Before I got these two lovelies, I had Ocha, a Maltese who was about 13 yrs old when she passed and Sophie, another Dachshund mix who was about 14 yrs old when she passed. I also served as a caretaker to a wonderful 15 year old Rottweiler, Radar who just passed last month. He was a sweet old boy who “calmed” me down during stressful days and I miss his sweet disposition very much.

Senior dogs are a joy…they kinda putz around the house all old and sweet. They like to cuddle and dont need super activity which is excellent for me, a writer, who’s always behind a book, watching a flick or locked behind my computer screen.

I’ve read many cases of senior dogs being dumped in the shelters due to their advanced age. I could never see myself doing this but I realize that for financially challenged guardians with limited incomes who cannot afford the medical bills incurred by a senior pet that becomes ill, this may be the only alternative they think they have.

Now it’s a different story if a senior dog is dumped because owners want to make room for a young pup or younger dog in the household. Now that is just…well…sad. It tugs at my heart when I hear stories of older dogs made to live out their final days in a cold shelter run or worse, be put to sleep because the odds are against them in terms of getting adopted.

So this is my pitch for the older dogs, I know that Downtown Dog Rescue has a couple of senior dogs that need homes like Charlie. Please consider him, and the others when you think of getting a new companion. We are also looking for a foster for him…

ACTIVATE: UPDATE on South LA Pitbull — You made a difference!

A wonderful update on the USC South LA Pitbull featured last week!

His name is TOMMY!

A special thanks to Heidi Lese for one of many
who responded and acted on behalf of Tommy!
Tommy was found near USC by Taryn and Cortney. He was malnourished and looked to have been on the streets for some time. He had no tags or other identifying information to help locate his previous owners. Tommy was a sweetheart and was perfectly content being fed and given attention by his rescuers. After being denied by any of the Pitbull rescue agencies in the area, and after feeding him a few Burger King burgers, Animal Services was called to pick him up. Once at the South LA Animal Shelter, veterinarians discovered that Tommy also had a fractured leg. He was scheduled to be put down as soon as legally allowed: 5 days after his arrival.
Meanwhile, in both LA and San Francisco, people were working to help Tommy. Taryn and Cortney were looking for a foster home or rescue agency to help Tommy. Up north, Sophia and Dave were doing the same. Despite everyone’s great efforts, no rescue agency had a place for poor Tommy.
Now, thanks to efforts by all of the above and more, we may have found a way to help Tommy. He’ll need surgery, but he could have a chance at a normal life. The two options available now are to amputate his fractured leg ($500) or to invest in repairing the leg ($2000). The prices are estimates, and time is a factor. That said, we need help to get Tommy the surgery he needs to survive.

Tommy at the LA shelter

UPDATE (March 20, 2010): Tommy’s now officially bailed out! He’s with his current foster and has spent a significant amount of his freedom getting checked out by the vet. The prognosis on his leg seems decent so far. Surgery next week. Thanks to all so far. More to come!

There were 67 dogs that were recently rescued by the SEAACA shelter from a boarding facility that was run by a person who allegedly starved, abused and severely neglected all the dogs at the boarding facility. When these dogs were picked up by SEAACA all were severely emaciated, had open skin sores and mange. Most of the 67 dogs were picked up by their owners….however dogs still remain at the SEAACA shelter and need to be adopted out as soon as possible to loving families or responsible rescue organizations.

Some of the other dogs have some degree of mange and all are very underweight. We have some available foster homes BUT need DONATIONS to cover the medical expenses. Donations are very appreciated.

These sweet dogs have gone through such a nightmare and do not deserve to die in a shelter. They are all sweet dogs and deserve to feel love, happiness and comfort.

SOUTH LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: CASHEW GOODNESS

CASHEW GOODNESS #A1091382

– by Katya
(South LA shelter volunteer)

Here, have a Cashew. He’s a tasty and delicious tiny treat.

I was there when Cashew was being dumped by his owner – the day before Valentine’s. The man didn’t care that Cashew was scared, that he’d be the 100th Pitbull there, that he had to pull him on the rope (not leash) he had for him to get him through the door of South LA shelter.

Cashew is as gentle as a dog can be. He is timid and tender, sensitive and sweet. He is kenneled with a bolder, barkier dog and Cashew has made friends with him nonetheless. He would make friends with any dog, as Cashew never wants to make waves. This dog would get along with anyone – he would not hurt a fly! I don’t know what Cashew has seen or been through to make him so shy and unsure, but I do know that in the 2 weeks he has been there, he has learned what a kind hand feels like and he has learned to trust me on our walks together. He has also learned to enjoy the grass, to close his eyes with joy when I pet him, and even learned how to give kisses.

Cashew MUST be saved! For the love of Pitties everywhere, please, we must rescue this boy together! He needs a kind home, he needs some time and patience to come out of his shell, he needs to learn to play like an 8 month old pup should, but never could, before. He is so handsome with those green eyes and caramel coloring…and best of all he has a heart of gold. With love and care, he would no doubt bloom and be the most wonderful of pets.

Help me network Cashew! He has years of love to give if we help him – […]
