WEST LA SHELTER RESCUE ME SPOTLIGHT: ROCKY, HAMSTER & SIMONE

Dogs who end up at West LA shelter are generally “luckier” than dogs at other city shelters like South LA because they generally get more time to find a home. But a pit bull in the shelter is still going to have a tough time finding the right home. For the three dogs listed below their right person just hasn’t come along yet and now their time is desperately coming to an end! Please consider meeting one of these dogs. They are living at the West LA Shelter. If you can adopt or foster call the shelter or

Rocky-A0958515 has been at West LA Shelter since Sept 16, 2010.
HIS TIME IS UP!!

This 3 year old guy has been through a lot. He was abandoned by his former owners along with his fellow pit bull friend. The landlords brought them to the shelter together. They were a nice pair. Then Rocky got adopted for a couple of days but the neighbor’s dogs was getting over the fence and obviously it was easier to return Rocky rather than fix the fence! Zeesh! So…now Rocky’s time is up at the shelter.

HE NEEDS TO FIND A HOME OR RESCUE!

Rocky is a cool dog that doesn’t need much. He likes to play fetch and hang out. Rocky is very quiet in his kennel and is happy when he gets to go for walks. He’d be great for someone who has a backyard and just wants to chill and throw a ball or he’d be just as great for an active person who likes to work out!
Rocky is worth saving! Come meet this dog at West LA Shelter before it’s too late!

Dog Beds for LA Animal Services Care Centers
Organized by Shelter Animal Advocacy Fund, Los Angeles

Subject: LAAS shelter dogs want you to go “Bed-A-buy”

Hello Friends and Animal Lovers,
A few weeks ago during the record rainfalls, a volunteer helped raise funds for dog beds at East Valley shelter (one of six LA city shelters). Because of the design of the shelters, the dogs are inadequately protected from the rain and forced to lay on cold, wet blankets or concrete. The beds have proven to be a huge success and we’ve started a campaign to buy beds for ALL the LA city shelters that have this same problem.

Please read Sherry’s plea below and consider donating to our cause and see why these beds are not only going to protect dogs from the elements when it rains, but provide comfort throughout every season!

Even if you can’t donate, please pass this message along.

Thank you!
Debbie

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago, I sent out a plea for donations to purchase Perla Beds** for the dogs in the East Valley Animal Shelter, who are in kennels that are unprotected from the weather elements, especially rain. Thanks to the many people who contributed to the cause, 79 beds were delivered last week and placed in as many kennels (there are approximately 200 kennels total). A campaign is underway to purchase lots more (presently for the East Valley, Harbor, West L.A. & North Central shelters).

It’s not raining now, you might say. However, the photos I took when I returned to the shelter to see if the dogs were enjoying them speak volumes – Perla Beds may also provide a comfort zone for dogs that are […]

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: WORKING TOGETHER

Working Together! DDR, West LA Shelter, and Fate!

This past weekend a great dog named Pink was adopted from the shelter and it all happened because Lori was open and kind enough to refer one of her adopters to the West LA Shelter!

What happened was that someone submitted an application for Edwina, one of Downtown Dog Rescue’s great dogs. An appointment was scheduled for them to meet her on Saturday and for whatever reason the stars did not align and the meeting never took place. I was at the shelter on Saturday and posted a picture on Facebook of a cute pit bull (Pink) in a Halloween costume.

Lori saw the picture and immediately thought that Pink could be good fit for Ann based on her application. She put Ann in touch with me and we arranged for her to come meet Pink on Sunday. The stars WERE aligned on Sunday and Ann adopted Pink that same day!

Pink, now named FATE, is living the good life with her new mom Ann!

I wanted to write about this great adoption because it’s a wonderful example of how we can all help save lives by working together! Lori has developed relationships with volunteers at various city shelters. Because of this relationship, she trusted my judgment on a dog and was able to send an adopter to the shelter to save the life of a dog that would otherwise be in jeopardy of being euthanized. In addition to working with the city shelter, Lori also works closely with other rescue groups, and if an application comes in that doesn’t fit any of her current available dogs she might refer that person to another rescue group. It can be a win-win situation for everyone; the potential adopter doesn’t feel like they have to “start over” just because the one dog they applied for isn’t right, the rescue group gets to strengthen their reputation, and of course, as in Fate’s case, and animal gets a second chance at a new life!

So, if you volunteer for your local shelter, try to develop relationships with rescue groups in your community…and vice versa. We all want to achieve the same goal….save more lives! The more we all work together as a team, the easier we can reach this […]

Deb’s Dogs of the Week: West LA Shelter – Donny & Clyde & Nero

Black Dog Syndrome Revisted – It’s Real!

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Black Dog Syndrome. It’s not a myth as these two black dogs at West LA Shelter can attest to. Donny and Nero have gone unnoticed and overlooked for months and their time is up!

Donny – A1110189 is a 2.5-3yr old Pit Bull Terrier. He has been at the shelter since April 26. Donny is on the smaller side and weighs about 40lbs. Donny has a lot of energy, which came across more “game dog” than “family pet” when he first arrived, but his personality has really blossomed and he responds really well to leadership. Donny likes to play fetch and has been very playful with lots of female dogs we’ve introduced him to. He has not been as friendly around unneutered males and definitely no cats! Donny is scheduled to be euthanized on August 29. Come meet him at West LA shelter before it’s too late!

Nero – A1104574 is a 4yr old German Shepherd mix. He has been at the shelter since April 3! Nero is very athletic and loves to play fetch. I’m sure he’d love to go hiking, running, and biking too! Nero would make a great companion for someone that enjoys the great outdoors. He has been introduced to a couple of female dogs but we do not know how he is around males. He walks well on leash and is not reactive. Nero’s time at the shelter is quickly coming to an end. Please come meet him today!

DDR YOUTH MATTER: Jordan Williams, DDR’s rising star on PIT BOSS!

Jordan Williams

We are proud to announce that one of our dedicated Downtown Dog Rescue Coliseum volunteers, Jordan Williams will be featured in this Saturday’s PIT BOSS show on Animal Planet!

Our weekly Sunday Pitbull class run by Dogman at the Coliseum is a place where two young men, Jordan, 14 years and his cousin Michael 15 years attend pitbull socialization classes every week. Both own pit bulls and have decided to spay+ neuter their dogs, they don’t believe in dog fighting and are great examples of two young people, growing up in a very violent South LA neighborhood, who do well in school and want to be successful in life along with their dogs. They are dedicated to being good examples of responsible pit bull owners. Jordan’s dog Pretty recently passed her CGC test and he received his certificate from the AKC.

In this episode, Shorty from Pit Boss assists Jordan’s efforts to try and convince his neighbor to neuter a pit bull responsible for multiple litters.

Please join us in witnessing Jordan’s shining moment
on Animal Planet’s PIT BOSS this weekend!

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: Black Dog Syndrome – Pearl

If you’ve never heard of Black Dog Syndrome (it’s a phenomenon that is well known to shelters and rescue organizations), it’s the idea that black dogs are much more difficult to find homes for than non-black dogs and they are often among the first dogs to be euthanized. If you think that this is a myth, just take a visit to your local shelter and test yourself to see which dogs you notice first. Chances are it’s the dogs that are lighter in color.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the two equally horrible intake photos of two dogs at South LA shelter. Which dog pops out at you first? The white one, right?

BENTLEY – ID#A1132925

ID#A1141500

Whether we mean to or not, black dogs get overlooked at the shelter. They are harder to see through kennel gates, they are harder to photograph, they tend to be “bigger” dogs – rottweilers, black lab/mixes, and of course pit bulls! There are also the stereotypes that black dogs are scary or evil and movies have a terrible history of portraying black dogs as mean and vicious. That’s a lot of stigma to have to overcome!

My point in all this is to say…next time you are thinking about adopting a dog, don’t forget about the black dogs. Of course personality should always come first, but if everything else is equal think about bringing the black dog home. Forget any stereotypes and instead, think about the positives…they don’t look as dirty as white dogs, black won’t clash with anything you own, and black is ALWAYS in style!

Pearl is one of the many black dogs that Downtown Dog Rescue has available for adoption. She is originally from South LA shelter (where I’m sure she had a horrible intake picture) and is now lucky enough to get to play with Lori’s whole pack. She is a submissive girl that gets along with all the dogs and even cats. Pearl is only 2 or 3 years old and would be a wonderful addition to any family.

Please contact lori@modernica.net to schedule a meeting to meet Pearl or any other of her wonderful black dogs!

DEB’S DOG OF THE WEEK: PEPPER

Pepper is a beautiful 3-legged dog that needs a super home! She is approximately 2-3 years old, is a Lab – Pit bull mix that weighs 55-60lbs. She is missing her front right leg as a result of a horrible dog attack at the facility where she was living before we rescued her. According to the kennel person, a dog grabbed her and almost killed her. She has endured so much suffering, was neglected, poorly cared for and basically left to heal on her own. Amazingly, she loves other dogs, is a submissive, sweet, gentle girl who only wants to give you kisses and snuggle against you. She gets around beautifully on three legs and loves to play. Although she would do best walking with a special support harness which our dog rescue will train the adopter how to use (it’s really easy), she can get around great on 3 legs.

Our vet gave her a good prognosis and the missing leg will not shorten her life span if she continues to stay fit and in good health. In person, she looks more like a Lab than a Pit bull Terrier, has very soft eyes and is waiting for her super special forever home. If you are ready to open your heart and home up to a dog who could live with both cats and dogs and small children.
Please call Sandy to make an appointment to meet Pepper at 818-407-4145 or e-mail me directly at Lori@modernica.net.

This dog is an A+ girl!

Pepper is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
