NOTE FROM LORI WEISE – Downtown Dog Rescue:

Please cross post this older female English Bull dog -Staff TerrierX. She was one of 21 dogs that came into to LA Animal Services as Evidence Dogs. When she was taken by the animal cruelty task force, she was badly injured, her body covered in bite wounds, presumably from being attacked by the other dogs. The owner signed her and the rest of the dogs in this pending case over to the Dept of Animal Services. Now they are all up for adoption. The other 20 dogs are being held at North East shelter. I met this dog on several occasions (before the owner was arrested) and she is social with people and other dogs.

Here is a link to the CBS report about the arrest:

Lori’s Corner: Pepper, a dog that touched my heart

If there were ever a dog that I was tempted to keep even though she is so adoptable, it would be Pepper. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I knew, she needed to get out of her horrible situation.

Her story is that she was attacked by an aggressive dog and he tore part of her leg off. The person did not take her to a vet and the leg healed on its own, without any professional veterinarian care. I can only imagine the severe pain that this sweet dog endure and yet she still loves other dogs, plays really well on her three good legs and is learning to trust people. Who could blame her, consider, it was a person’s fault that she lost her leg due to carelessness and being overwhelmed with too many dogs on one property.

I have to admit, when I watch her play, really running hard, enjoying herself with all of her new friends, Sasha, Edwina, Charlie and Bruno, I get tears in my eyes. She is a dog that makes me want to do more for all of the other “Peppers” that are out there that need help. South Los Angeles, Watts and Compton are full of stray dogs and dogs that have been injured in dog fights, hit by cars and just plain neglect.

If you can’t adopt one of our dogs, please consider sponsoring a dog in need. Pepper is ready for her forever home, please spread the word about this wonderful dog!

BE IN THE KNOW: Justice for the 61st Street Kennel Dogs

Legal attorney turned rescuer, Diane Carey was finally arrested Saturday on felony animal cruelty charges.

She was caught driving a moving van in Inglewood that contained 19 dogs stuffed in a hot van without food or water. Dogs were in “apparent poor health.”

Diane is the president of South Central Stray Rescue AKA 61st Street kennel where Downtown Dog Rescue dogs, Larry, Lucy, Amanda + Pepper + countless other dogs were rescued from.

Lori’s Corner: “When the crisis is over the work begins!”

I don’t think that I’ve ever opened up my e-mails and not read about some crisis happening, going to happen or will happen if… Usually the “if”reads “if a rescue doesn’t step up and save this dog now!!!!” These rescue pleas can be overwhelming and frustrating if I don’t stay positive. My pack of about 20 rescued dogs, have for the most part, all survived some horrific situation or were rescued on their last day or last hour at the South LA shelter.

Perhaps the biggest crisis we ever responded to was the 61st Street kennel situation, where over 118 dogs were being neglected, allow to attack and often kill each other, right in our own backyard, in South Central LA. To date, all of the dogs that we could rescue are safe and lots of them have been adopted. We are now down to the last few 61st Street kennel dogs that still need a forever home.

Seven days a week, twice a day, for many hours, I’m with the dogs. We do lots of things together, including, going to the park, going on walks, going on car rides, and of course, Billy takes dogs out several times a week for special long hikes. Just feeding and cleaning up after 20+ dogs every day is a lot of work but when you consider that each dog comes with a complex set of challenges. One of the biggest challenges is how to say, “no more dogs”, saying it and meaning it, otherwise, one runs the risk of becoming another 61st Street kennel where the president of the rescue could not say the word NO. She kept taking on more and more dogs, all in the name of no-kill. Larry was one of the dogs that went to her “no kill rescue”

Larry is a wonderful dog, super sweet, who loves all female dogs, is tolerant of male dogs but hates small dogs. He was chained 24/7 at the 61st Street kennel. He is definitely ready for a forever home but not one calls, not one e-mails and zero applications have come in for this great dog. Rather than running to rescue another dog, we focus on working with Larry, making his life, while at our kennel, the best possible life he can have. Larry was a dog that at one time, was an urgent plea from a shelter dog network, offering a rescue group money to take him, and look where he ended up, in hell. Sure he was rescued but he was chained up with 117 other dogs. Sure he wasn’t euthanized but the suffering that this dog endured at that kennel was so great that if we had not come into truly rescue him, being euthanized would certainly […]

FRIDAY SHOUT OUTS: Giving Thanks

This week was a special adoption week for many of the volunteers of DDR and especially Lori and one great pitty with a dream. Indeed we want to give thanks in HUGE PROPORTIONS. Our beloved CocoPuff with his long standing dream got adopted!!!!

After living in the DDR kennels for three years, Coco Puff never even got one single inquiry, application or visit. It would seem that no one was interested in him until last week. An
“out of the box” adoption, Coco Puff has finally found someone that will care for him for the rest of his life. Coco Puff will now be an active road dog in San Pedro, traversing the streets with his pack leader. It would only seem right that Coco would do the Thank You honors this week-

Ready Coco? GO!

On behalf of DDR, I would like to thank first of all the person who adopted me…Errol. It’s nice to finally have someone love me and take me into their life. Thank you Errol! Lori and a lot of DDR volunteers and friends are cheering us on! You made my dream come true! A special thanks too to Cynthia Larkin for introducing you to Lori and DDR so you could find me!

Talking about new beginnings…DDR would like me to extend a HUGE thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan and the foundation named after them,The Cesar and Illusion Millan Foundation for their generous donation to assist with medical care, boarding and spay/neuter surgeries for the 61st Street Kennel dogs. Providing care and support for all the dogs rescued from the 61st Street kennels earlier this year posed a big financial and logistical challenge for a fairly small rescue like Downtown Dog Rescue and with the great news we got this week, namely the Foundation’s assistance, we can now continue to provide the needed care to give them and more dogs another chance for a good life. Thank you Sean Hawkins from the Foundation and of course thanks to Cesar and Illusion Millan!

Wow! Thanks Coco…Coco!?! Coco’s asleep!

He’s been walking the streets of San Pedro with Errol, being introduced as the new road partner! He’s pooped! lol! Ok, go ahead and sleep Coco!!! Live a happy and long life — we will […]

DDR DOGGY SNIPPETS REDUX! Amanda & Medira

AMANDA

Amanda is 4-5 year old and is about 35 lbs. She is spayed and current on all vaccinations. She is a very petite and friendly pit bull terrier. She has had a very hard life. Her original owner, a taxi driver, lost his home, and he had no choice but to keep her in his taxi and drive her around with the passengers he picked up. This worked until someone complained to the cab company. He found a neighbor in Compton with a yard who already had 15 dogs on her property. This was ok for a few weeks until Animal Control mandated that she get rid of 12 dogs, Amanda being one of the dogs.

Off she went to a poorly run kennel where she was warehoused in a tiny crate with hardly any food and dirty water. She was attacked by other dogs at this facility and as a result, suffered bite wounds to her face and muzzle. She is definitely not a fighter but had to fight for food and water at this kennel. But don’t worry, Amanda is sweet sweet sweet and she did not let this bad place change the lovely personality that she has. Animal Control began investigate the kennel and they were mandated to reduce their numbers; this is where Downtown Dog Rescue came in.

Amanda was rescued because she had no chance of a good life if we didn’t take her. Emaciated, full of fleas, a bad eye that is still being treated, she is so grateful to have food, water, a blanket and a dog house every night to sleep in. Slowly, we are teaching her to walk on a leash and allowing her to enjoy her time with our dog pack. Please consider adopting or even fostering to adopt sweet Amanda who has been to hell and back. If you are interested in meeting or adopting OR EVEN FOSTERING Amanda, please phone Sandy at: 818-407-4145 or complete an APPLICATION

ACTIVATE: Charlotte Spadaro’s Riverside Property Raided

Note from Editor: Charlotte Spadaro allegedly works with Diane Carey, South Central Stray Rescue kennel AKA 61st street kennels that is now completely shut down. All of the dogs are gone to an undisclosed location in Riverside.

Officers Seize 29 Animals From
Riverside Property;
One Dog Found Dead
Among the Neglected
-from the Riverside Department of Animal Services

Friday, April 23, 2010, RIVERSIDE – Officers seized 29 animals from a Riverside property today (April 23) where most of them were living in substandard and neglected conditions.
Captain Tammie Belmonte took the lead on what is suspected to be an animal cruelty investigation. Of the 29 animals confiscated, one was a female cat, plus four kittens she was nursing.

One dog was found dead inside a trailer in the rear of the property, located in the 3000 block of Myers Street, west of Van Buren Boulevard and just south of Highway 91. Roughly 15 other dogs, mostly puppies, were stored inside the trailer. The stench of the trailer was overwhelming, Captain Belmonte said. “No animal should have to live like this,” Captain Belmonte said.
Someone called the Riverside Police Department about 11 a.m. regarding the welfare of the animals and the police officers contacted Riverside County Animal Services. The city of Riverside contracts with the county for its animal control and sheltering needs. Animal control officers were on scene about 11:15 a.m.
The owner of the dogs was not on the property during the seizure. The owner is believed to be Charlotte Spadaro, a woman Riverside County Animal Services has been monitoring for more than two years. Spadaro, a former Beverly Hills mayor, is facing animal cruelty charges in neighboring San Bernardino County.

“This will be processed as a potential animal cruelty case and forwarded to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for review,” Captain Belmonte said.
The 29 animals became the very first residents of the new Western […]
